Coalition launches Libya attacks

Reporting from Paris and Tripoli, Libya— French President Nicolas Sarkozy signaled the start of military action against Libya Saturday after an emergency summit in Paris of world powers.

Jets from an international force were flying missions over Libya, hours after Moammar Kadafi dispatched troops, tanks and warplanes to the heart of the 5-week-old uprising against his rule in a decisive strike on the first city seized by rebels.

Sarkozy said France and its partners were determined to halt Kadafi’s “killing frenzy.”

This is embarrassing, the ***French President ***is announcing air strikes, NOT the President of the United States, who has other things to do. . . like work on his golf handicap, his NCAA picks, or his itinerary for his Brazilian get-away. The guy seems to have no interest in the responsiblities that come with leading the most powerful nation on earth. Of course this is what happens when you elect a guy who never so much as ran an ice cream shop to run the most powerful nation on earth.

Give it a rest. It shouldn’t be any surprise that France would take the lead in the imposition of the no-fly zone since the rebel government has been cozying up to them for weeks. The armed forces of the United States have done enough chest pounding in the Middle East over the last 10 years. We’re launching cruise missiles in support of the operation. Thats enough for now and who cares which leader announces it first as long it gets done.

The rebels have been “cozying up to” the French for weeks?

Actually, they’ve been looking for somebody, anybody, to give them a hand before they get annihilated while trying to take out one of the most evil dictators in the middle east. Since President Hamlet has been sitting around unsure whether “to be, or not to be”, and going over NCAA picks on ESPN, the French had to step in and do the “world cop” role that is normally the role of the US (until we got a “not ready for prime time” President, that is)
 
Well, maybe if the Lybians were homosexuals who wanted to marry then they would have gotten support from our POTUS.😉

BFD. Who gives a r.a. who makes the announcement as long as the action is being taken. If the President of Togo announced the attacks, it wouldn’t make any difference.

Since when is it a prime responsibility of the POTUS to make announcements of military operations that the U.S. is only peripheral to?

The Poseur in Chief, had to be dragged into supporting this by Hillary (it’s been all over the news)

Looks like Carville was right when he said if Hillary gave Obama one of hers, they’d both have two.

Yes, diplomatic envoys have been traveling back and forth from Benghazi and Paris for awhile now.

Just because the President doesn’t announce military and diplomatic strategy to the world doesn’t mean he’s not doing anything. The French stepped in because the United States has no business being the front-man for another war in the Middle East.

We had no business messing in Libya, and that opinion was held by most of the commenters on this Forum as well as the public. Even now, I hope he won’t be “dragged into” sending ground troops into Libya as some would have him do. Have our armed forces nothing else to do, say in the Middle East?
 
I think it’s a good thing the French, not the US are taking the lead on this one. For one, it’s sort of their turf, as a former European colony (of Italy, actually, so maybe Berlusconi should be doing something). Also, it means the we in the US won’t have to do all the work “policing the world” and such. Somebody else can step in and do their part. Why should the US have to do everything? (After all, we haven’t even shown ourselves to be that good at it.)

Red herring, no one is calling for ground troops, besides, there’s already enough “rebels” that ground troops aren’t needed, just air cover.

And I seem to remember YOU supporting us sending air support WEEKS ago, while President do-nothing had to be pushed and prodded by Hillary and Europe.
 
Sorry to rain on your parade, but this is primarily a European problem since Libya is literally right at their doorstep. The U.S. should have little to no role in this other than to support our European allies. But as I write this I see the U.S. and U.K. have launched over 100 cruise missiles into Libya.

And by the way, since when does doing NCAA picks and whatnot take more than 15 minutes out of anyones day. All the president has to do is listen to his advisors and give orders. It’s not like he’s formulating the military plan to take down Gadhafi or brushing up on his nuclear engineering in an effort to solve Japan’s nuke crisis.

Some on the Forum would have us attack with our own forces. Nix on that.

That “Clinton insider” could be nothing more than a janitor who takes out the trash from her office. I watched the interview. She’s just not interested in any public office and it has nothing to do with whether or not she disagrees with Obama on the Libyan issue; we have no idea if she does or not. Either way; the decision on Libya was/is not hers to make and I applaud a President who is willing to listen to multiple points of view and weigh the risks against the benefits before deciding whether or not to go to war. The Joint Chiefs were against it and so was the Libyan rebel government up until two weeks ago. Even then; they were very clear that they wanted it to go through the UN.
 
A secretary of state leaving between terms is nothing unusual. It’s a tough job at best…Remember, Powell left during the last administration.
