It sounds as if the discussion will be hard on the Catholic Church. Jason Berry is the guest, and he is author of Vows of Silence: The Abuse of Power in the Papacy of John Paul II, a 2004 book which claims the Vatican soft-peddled the abuse allegations against the Legionaries’ founder, Mexican Father Marcial Maciel Degollado.

Though it wasn’t a typical Maureen Dowd style attack of late, I turned it off after a bit. Yes Marciel was an evil disgusting pig and is more than likely burning in hell right now; yet it began to sound like another attempt to blame Pope Benedict and Rome again! When I heard them refer to an article in the National Catholic Reporter, that’s all I needed to hear in order to shut off the radio!

Thanks for posting this! Berry was vilified in some quarters for “Vows of Silence.” Fr. Neuhaus at “First Things” was noteworthy in his (remarkably uninformed) defense of the Fr. Maciel, whom NO ONE now defends against the damning charges of many of his victims. No one in Rome wanted to hear the bad news about that man, and their turning away from the truth now damns them in the eyes of many.

We turned it off after about 3 minutes. I checked out Jason’s website a few days ago and figured we were in for a “Catholic bashing” show, but my husband wanted to give it chance. I like C2C, but sometimes the guests are too much!

The “Vows of Silence” video about Maciel on YouTube has received more than 40,000 hits.

I thank God for Jason Berry, with whom I met and discussed the issue of clerical sex abuse during his visit to our city. He is a practicing Catholic and fearless journalist, whose efforts have made it much more difficult for sexual predators to hide out in parishes.

Someone needed to shine a light on the issue; we should be grateful to Mr. Berry for doing so.
