The Shield
In the essential tracts, Pope Francis decided to conserve his previous coat of arms, chosen ever since his episcopal consecration and characterized by a linear simplicity.
The blue shield has the symbols of the pontifical dignity, equal to those willed by the predecessor Benedict XVI ā¦]. Above is the emblem of the order of provenience of the Pope, the Company of Jesus ā¦] below are the star and the Nard flower. The star, according to the ancient heraldic tradition, is a symbol of the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of Christ ad of the Church; while the Nard flower indicates Saint Joseph, patron of the universal Church. In the Hispanic iconographic tradition, in fact, Saint Joseph is represented holding a branch of Nard. By placing in his shield these images, the Pope wanted to express his own particular devotion to the Most Blessed Virgin and Saint Joseph.
The Motto
The motto of Holy Father Francis is taken from the Homilies of Saint Bede the Venerable, priest (Om. 21; CCL 122, 149-151), who, commenting the evangelic episode of the vocation of St. Matthew, writes: āVidit ergo lesus publicanum et quia miserando atque eligendo vidit, ait illi Sequere meā (Jesus saw a publican, and since he looked at him with feeling of love and chose him, he told him: Follow me).
This homily is a homage to the divine mercy and is reproduced in the Liturgy of the Hours on the feast of Saint Matthew. It has a particular significance in the life and in the spiritual itinerary of the Pope. In fact, on the feast of Saint Matthew of 1953, the young Jorge Bergoglio experienced at age 17, in a very particular way, the lovely presence of God in his life. After a confession, he felt his heart touched and perceived the descend of Godās mercy, which with a look of tender love called him to religious life, on the example of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.
Once elected Bishop, H.E. Mons. Bergoglio, in memory of that event that marked the beginning of his total consecration to God in His Church, he decided to chose, as motto and program of life, the expression of Saint Bede miseando atque eligendo, which he wanted to reproduce on his pontifical coat of arms as well.
