I dont’ know much about the organization but have seen the bumperstickers.

I would question your assertion that religious freedom is the norm…

I would also question that the bumber stickers are about religious freedom. To me they speak more to religious tolerance.

There is a differance…

I personally despise those stickers and see them as promoting false tolerance (insert fulton sheen quote here).

Although, I think that religious freedom is the norm… provided you arent Christian. I was actually told in high school that I could not read the bible in the lunchroom… Yet the Koran was ok…

Those stickers upset me…

First, we must apparently separate the bumper stickers from the foundation, as there appears to be no direct connection between them. The bumper sticker clearly promotes indifferentism and relativism. Who knows who is behind it?

As to the foundation itself, it might well have good intentions. However, in all of the world, and within all cultures, only one of the three faiths (Islam, Judaism, Christianity) needs to actually apply the principal of coexistence. Rather uncomfortably for the foundation, the tenets of Islam prohibit that naively sought-after coexistence.

OK, so let’s just see where is this foundation most involved, shall we? Hmmm, New York City, England, Australia, New Zealand, France, Mosul Iraq (arranging play space for terrorized and displaced Christian children) and Mumbai India. What’s next, Portland, Oregon? I note that each nation is a recent and direct, or feared to be future victim of Islamic terrorism. Ah, it’s a little clearer now: I say this is at best a “Chamberlain” type peace-making organization, and at worst, it is a front organization for various Islamic groups.

Notice that the foundation directs nearly all of their efforts at nations in which none of the three faiths is actively suppressed, and almost no effort at all in nations where Judaism and Christianity are actively and forcefully suppressed. They list the classes of people involved in the foundation: I note that religious leaders are mentioned last.

There is surprisingly little info about the foundation on the web, other than various sites which simply parrot the foundation’s own stated purpose. Based on the foregoing, I am very suspicious of this organization. To show good faith, they should concentrate their efforts in Islamic nations. Fat chance.

If religious freedom is not the norm, then why are there Jewish, Muslim, and Christian Churches in every western Nation? That is the message intended from the Coexist foundation is’nt it -to live alongside other faiths…?

Or perhaps the message being imposed deals with what we ought to feel or say about false doctrines of faith. It would be an injustice should Catholics be forced to live in fear for proclaiming, for example that Islam is a false religion.

Should we accept the notion that somehow speaking-up against other religions is some form of intolerance, which seems to be the obvious message from the Coexist foundation…?

I think not, and I think we need to speak out against the dangers of this “Foundation”.

Islam is not a religion. It is a world domination ideology with violent aspects. It includes social, religious, legal, and political aspects, with the religious aspect being the Trojan Horse to introduce all the other parts into a religiously tolerant society.

I suspect that the “Coexist” agenda is to force acceptance of Islam as well as homosexuality, putting these things as equal with Judaism and Christianity. I despise these stickers. Here’s one answer:

And in a free society, you should be free to say so. For you to have to keep-quiet out of fear would be an injustice -which is what the coexist foundation seems to be striving for.

Yes, the message of the “Coexist” bumper sticker is just a re-wording of the 60’s mantra “Can’t we all just get along?”

It is also, that all these symbols are on an equal basis and must be treated as such. The people who put these stickers on their cars stand for nothing. Except intolerance of other people’s dedication to the truth, which is that Islam is not merely a religion which should be tolerated.

This is heresy of the first order. It was my confessor, a Dominican priest, who once reminded me in confession of the sin of indifference, which he classed among the sins against the Holy Spirit. While I am no longer loyal to Rome (in no small part due to Rome’s own indifference), his words have stuck with me to this day. He said that the sin of indifference takes two main forms:
  1. Nothing is God.
or
  1. Everything is God.
The problems with each should be immediately obvious. It is these attitudes, often couched in very ambiguous or seemingly charitable language, that lead Christianity to be viewed as one among three faiths of roughly the same import and deserved of the same levels of respect. And so we will all eventually kiss the Qur’an and bow for Al-Fajr, not necessarily because we have joined obviously indifferent organizations like this one, but because our own churches have lost their identities for fear of offending those who only see the need for coexistence so long as they are not in a position to demand subservience (which is Islam’s idea of coexistence).

Nice points. 👍

The highlighted section above is the basis of my argument… It is an injustice for this foundation to impose its goal onto us, which is to teach us not to speak-up anymore.

Should Jesus have just kept quiet when he caused all those upheavels…? Oh sure, Jesus should have just stopped speaking-up to the Jews and pharisees in fear of offending them…

I must admit I’ve always liked these bumper stickers, as I just thought people were trying to spread a “peace on earth” kinda of community feeling, how we’re all “in this together” in a way.

But you’re all saying that as Catholics, we shouldn’t want to “coexist?”

If the foundation was interested in an “in this together” type of “community” feeling, I can’t for the life of me figure out why there would be a need to bring up religion in the first place, as ones faith is a private matter.

Besides, here in the United States where I live, I see Muslims, Jews, the hare-krishnas(which drive me crazy with their constant singing and drumming), Christians of every kind, etc. We already “coexist” and have been doing so for quite some time.

You see, there is no need to equalize religion for the purpose of “coexisting”… It’s just unnecessary to do so. It becomes overwhealming to the point that people feel shame for merely believing in anything.

The end result and the original purpose seem obvious to me: to turn the concept of religion into taboo.

You know, I’ve seen more than a few of these stickers in the parking lots of Catholic Churches… If you’re guilty, and I’m not saying you are, but if you have one of these on your bumper, you might want to simply peel it off.

I hear WD-40 works great for getting that sticky film from underneath off.

I must admit I’ve always liked these bumper stickers, as I just thought people were trying to spread a “peace on earth” kinda of community feeling, how we’re all “in this together” in a way.
But you must consider that the underlying assumption of the sticker, is that there is no such thing as religious truth, but merely a personal preference of cultural expression. Anyone who thinks that a religion is more than a mere taste for something – as if it were a musical genre or a sport or board game – I feel should naturally consider the folly of the message these stickers attempt to communicate.

Not all systems of world-view compliment each other, and it is bizarre to line them up together as if they do.

I don’t particularly care for them. I only saw one and when I did, I was looking wondering what.
Then it became clear what it was saying and my initial response was to shake my head, because to me what it was saying is not really true.

Yes we need to co-exist to accept each other as people but to say that such religions as Chrisitianity and Muslims can co-exist is not true. They are fundamentally very different and their intent is to not co-exist with any religion other than their own.

Forgot to mention too.

The symbols are indicating more than the three major religions and include the eastern relgion, not sure about the candle.

Can’t imagine what the peace sign would represent other than for those who are the free spirits, nature/wiccan types

Homosexuality is not a religion it is a sexual perference

So to me exactly what this is, makes no sense…Like a few here suggested and or implied is that it is just something to diminsh believe in anything.

I think you just said a mouthful.

I have a bumper sticker that is somewhat similar to the coexist sticker.

The difference is mine includes more religious symbols in a row above large lettering which reads:

“Love One Another”

I guess that message doesn’t sell well here.

Seeker.

“Love One Another”

I guess that message doesn’t sell well here.
Oh come now. We can love one another and still discern truth from lies. And it’s completely the case that Islam and Christianity are mutually exclusive; if one is true then the other cannot be. That’s not even a matter of faith, so much as simple logic.

Sam, the Neon Orange Knight

I guess that message doesn’t sell well here.
I am glad that you make an attempt to ‘love’ people, regardless of whether or not you agree with their belief system. I likewise think that such a gesture is an aspect of a particular world-view which others may not share; and I would argue that, in ‘love’ for them, you should not attempt to dissuade them from such positions. Afterall, to tell someone that they adhere to a principle which you think is wrong, is something which might cause them unpleasant feeling; and to instill difficult emotions into a person’s mind is certainly not ‘love’.

To ‘love’ such people as disagree with your bumper sticker, you should pat them on the back, and tell them that they are quite right, and that never should they let anyone tell them differently. Indeed, all people should believe whatever they choose, and never should they share such belief with anyone who is not of like-mind; otherwise, how on earth would we ever avoid conflict? We should all express exactly the same thoughts to each other, and to say otherwise is not to speak from ‘love’ for all mankind. Can difference of opinion, clearly adhered to, ever be ‘love’? Naturally, it could not; so, we must therefore avoid it.

On the other hand, perhaps the deepest love comes from the closest alignment of minds; and maybe this is a state which is far more rare than some dare to admit.

If you had specified “norm in western nations” in your OP, I would not have had a problem. You did not. If taken to mean" universally", in every nation around the globe then “religious freedom” may not be “the norm”. Note that I did not say it was NOT the norm, but only that I question that it is.
