Probably because their backers in Caracas have become more hostile towards the Church since Chavez’s death. Chavez, while not the best of Catholics, was not this militant.

I have noticed from reading some Latin American news that it seemed the Post-Chavez leadership in Caracas seemed more militant and less tolerant of opposition, as well as being less tolerant of the Church.

Chavez was more left-populist if anything, but remember he led a coalition of everyone from left-leaning Catholics to doctrinaire Marxists. Maduro as his running mate was supposed to appeal to those doctrinaire Marxists. Obviously, Chavez wasn’t planning on dying when he did. So now Venezuela is led by someone who practically is a Communist. And we all know what Communists tend to think of Holy Mother Church…
