Colorado School bans rosary beads

Well don’t recall there being photography in the 1600’s when the good saint was alive. What does it matter anyway? It clearly illustrates a rosary being worn around the neck. And shocker…it’s a picture that the Church diseminates. You’d think the Vatican would know that wearing a rosary was sacraligious…apparently they aren’t as smart as some people on CAF.
Why is it when I do a search for St. Martin, the number of pictures showing him without a rosary around his neck out number the ones that show it?

Easy…Artistic representation.

Also, you’re talking apples and oranges. You are talking a high school student of the 21st century versus a Dominican in the 1600’s.

Hardly a comparison.

I have no idea why your search is coming up the way it is. I’m not seeing what you are.

I must have missed it, where did I say that the two were comparable?

1.Again, artistic representation vs real life photography.
  1. 1600’s vs 21st century. Whole different set of social values don’t you think?
  2. The church has spoken on it. Maybe you missed this on page 1.
Q: Can a rosary be worn as a piece of jewelry?

A: “Sacred objects, set aside for divine worship by dedication or blessing, are to be treated with reverence. They are not to be made over to secular or inappropriate use, even though they may belong to private persons” (CIC 1171).
  1. From the Diocese of Sioux Falls.
I would say the Church has spoken plenty.

“No item having a sacred character is to be sold at auction or otherwise placed in a situation where misuse is possible.”
Where might I ask did I say that it could be worn as jewelry?

You didn’t have to. I am sure he means, if it around your neck, it is jewelry.

He doesn’t like it, so no one should do it.

To him this

Means no, you may not put it around your neck. Where in fact, all it says is to treat sacred objects with reverence. The assumption is that the act of putting it around your neck is not reverent. 🤷

Matthew 6:5-6
5.And when ye pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, that love to stand and pray in the synagogues and corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men: Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.
6.But thou when thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber, and having shut the door, pray to thy Father in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret will repay thee.
So Papal Masses which are definitely not secret or hidden are bad because they are disobedient to this passage?

Getting mad at school officials for trying to keep students and teachers safe is misplaced. Blame it on the gangs that use rosaries (and other identifiers).
So rosaries are used as weapons? Using rosaries as identifiers for fellow gang members to know who they are is like the Military using uniforms to identify who their soldiers are. Since rosaries are practically banned in most schools because of this then I guess gangs have a real problem with its members?

Please.

Thank you for explaining it in dummy for me. My “blonde” kicked in and I wasn’t making the connection. Now I get it…:doh2:

Kids wearing rosaries around their necks as fashion statements are an affront to the Catholic faith. You’re not supposed to wear a rosary around your neck where people can see it like jewelry. That’s not what rosaries are for. :whacky::whacky:

Is a rosary any more sacred than a crucifix? Would you say that a religious who wears a Crucifix around the neck is treating it as jewelry?

The military is free to use uniforms to identify who their soldiers are. Students are not so free to do so. Too bad. 🤷

The Military does not use uniforms to identify soldiers are as they have other means to do so. Gangs do not need rosaries to identify themselves and if they do, it does not lessen in any way their threat to the students. Banning rosaries have no impact on reducing or eliminating gang violence.

One wears a brown scapular around the neck. Some religious wear a scapular out openly in their habit. Are you going to tell me that wearing a brown scapular around their neck is okay but not a rosary worn around the neck by a lay person isn’t?

The problem I have with people who are against wearing rosaries out openly are judging the interior heart of the person by saying they treat it as jewellery. Only God can read thoughts.
for one thing, a scapular is meant to be worn around the neck and for the most part under the clothes. A rosary is not a neckless and to wear one as such even if you are planning on praying it every hour on the hour can be viewed as a cause for sacreligious use and signals to others whether you mean it or not that it is ok and normal. While one’s intention may be pure and wearing it under clothes in another issue, it does give others the impression that this is the way to use a rosary. it is one thing to wear under your clothes, it is another to wear it out as a neckless publically and give rise to misunderstanding about its proper use.

the rosary has a specific use as a prayer tool. you unfortunately are confusing religious jewerly with prayer beads. You do not pray specific prayers holding your crucifix neckless normally. you do specific prayers with a rosary and to wear it whether you intend it or not give a false use idea to others.

Schools have been banning identifiers for years. Rosaries aren’t the only identifiers being banned, such as certain colored hoodies. The schools are doing all they can to stop gang activity in the school. Parents should be grateul and supportive, not unrealistic.

Holy gangsters

By David Waters

This isn’t what St. Padre Pio had in mind when he said, “the rosary is my weapon.”

Gang members in some of the more Catholic parts of the country are using rosaries (and their First Amendment right to religious freedom) to signal their rank and allegiance, especially in schools that enforce strict dress codes and uniforms.

Offensive picture. Offensive comment.
Offensive picture??? There is nothing offensive about.

It is in a catalog from a Catholic supplier. They sell only Catholic goods, crucifixes, medals, rosaries and the like.

It is one thing to not want to wear a rosary yourself, but it is another to claim it is crazy for someone else to want to wear one.
