Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on Comedy Central’s decision to offer a new animated show, “JC,” in its upcoming lineup:

All we know about “JC” is that it will be a half-hour show about Christ seeking to live a normal life in New York outside the reach of his “powerful but apathetic father.” But we know much more about who is doing this.

These are the same executives who delight in bashing Christians while continuing to censor any depiction of Muhammad on “South Park.” They also deceive. Kent Alterman, a network official, says this about the show: “In general, comedy in its purest form always makes some people uncomfortable.” Not true. Besides the fact that there is no end to the number of comedians who have made a huge name for themselves without ever offending anyone, what is even more relevant is the fact that Comedy Central has absolutely no interest in making Muslims feel uncomfortable.

But maybe they’re wrong. Muslims regard Jesus to be a prophet and hold Him in high regard. They may not be too pleased to learn that one of their revered figures is going to be ridiculed on Comedy Central. To that end, we will not only contact the Catholic community, we will contact Muslim organizations as well. If you show up at Herzog’s office, and he says he is feeling uneasy, let him know that having a fun time in its purest form always makes some people feel uncomfortable. He is sure to understand.

You know of course that the more we screech about these things, the more they (media) like to tweak us. I think if we all just went “Ho hum” and then talked about other things, the less they (media) would think about producing/writing these kinds of programs.

It is slightly possible that some non-believer might watch such a series and then be interested in learning more about Jesus. In the long run the Church wil not come to a halt, and I believe Jesus can take care of himself…always has, always will.

Perhaps it’s time for us to turn off the TV and do other things. I think if I’m lucky, I watch maybe 2 hours of TV a week. I read theology, good fiction, and listen to music. And I try to learn more and practice my faith more. I’m certainly not even close to being a Saint (I’m struggling in that direction), but I think it’s easier to become more “saint-like” without TV.

My thoughts regarding this bring me back to an incident which occurred after the release of the deliberately blasphemous film, “The Last Temptation of Christ”, which was produced with defiant zeal by MCA, and its powerful chief, Lew Wasserman. Franco Zefferelli, the brilliant Italian director, summed up alot of people’s angst regarding this offensive movie by asking, “What would Lou Wasserman say if an Italian decided to make a film about Abraham sodomizing Isaac?”

Perhaps, that same cogently ironical question should be asked of mssrs. Herzog and Alterman? The irony of the question might be bitingly frank, but hard questions regarding truth usually are. Causing intentional insult and pain, then standing back in the shadows, cynically laughing, is humor of a macabre origin. One might call it pathological. Certainly, it is intentionally cruel.

We should all voice our protest against another outrageous attempt to mock and blaspheme our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is malicious and base in design, and crosses the lines of decency. It should be strongly opposed.

It is precisely because of things like this show that I do not support “Americanism” with its idea of complete separation of church and state. Christianity being the traditional faith of a majority of the American people, all who live here should be enjoined to respect it.

Americanism, which in extreme cases amounts to idolatry towards the U.S. Constitution, founding fathers, and political ideals, was condemned as a heresy by Pope Leo XIII.
