What lies behind the highly unusual denial this week by Pope Benedict XVI that the Vatican was involved in the smearing of Dino Boffo, a Catholic editor critical of the private life of Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian Prime Minister, as a “renowned homosexual”?
The most common explanation is that the accusations and denials over the Vatican’s alleged involvement in the ousting of Mr Boffo last year as editor of Avvenire, the newspaper of the Italian Catholic bishops, are the outward and visible sign of a Byzantine territorial battle between the Vatican and Italian bishops over the extent to which the Church should be involved in Italian politics.
Under headlines such as “Poison in the Vatican”, Italian newspapers have painted a picture of Vatican corridors bristling with intrigue against Italian bishops worthy of medieval times or the Renaissance-era Borgia family.
