Yes. We have ads that promote the family.
We have ads that show others that we are…simply people like you.

It’s not a sin.
It’s not a crime.
It’s not unethical.
It’s not immoral.

It’s a very good idea, and one that Catholics have used frequently and with great effect.

For instance, one of my favorite ads of all time…one that so impressed me that I have the link to it permanently in my file of 'things to watch over and over again," is this very wonderful…

Please be sure that when you criticise something, you do it because the ‘something’ is a problem, not because you dislike the people doing it. Remember, Catholics, too, evangilize. Catholics, too, have ads showing their best sides, extolling their own virtues, and letting others know who they are and how they want to be seen.

So, if you think it is awful of Mormons to do this, kindly write to the Vatican.

Because, my friends, Catholics do this too, and if it is a bad thing when Mormons do it, it’s a bad thing when Catholics do it.

No offense taken, my friend. I was talking about those targeted by the missionaries as confused and vulnerable. That is why LDS missionaries comb the obituaries looking for young widows and widowers to contact. But all Mormons seem confused and fuzzy-thinking to me.

And yes…Diana is much more the recruiter type. And she is not a convert, is she?

I DID, however, tailor my information to the needs of the person I was talking to, so if I ran into a widow, yes…I talked about our concept of eternal marriage and family, because that’s pretty neat comfort.

I did have a bout with atheism for a bit there, and had to be ‘re-recruited.’ Dunno if that counts, though–didn’t last all that long. I just couldn’t keep the atheist mindset.

Speaking of LDS commercials, I set my Tivo to record Shawn McCraney’s Heart of the matter for the first time and my Tivo refused to record it. I set it a week before it aired and it did not record it. Then I manually tried to hit record when the program was on and it did not record. I could record other things but not that show. I think it’s odd my Tivo would not let me record that episode but I could record other programs at that time. I’m wondering if some LDS person who works for DirecTV somehow deactivated my Tivo so it would not record that episode.

That was interesting, thanks. I think that I have seen commercials from 1 or 2 Protestant churches (the Methodist Church was one I think). Apparently in some areas the Catholics Come Home commercials also air.

One thing you can NOT say about these commercials is that they say anything at all about politics.

C’mon, Steph…give it a rest, for crying out loud. Everybody does this. Catholics do it a LOT, and it’s a highly effective missionary tool for everybody. I approve of it when you guys do it…the more commercials like “I’m a skateboarder and a Mormon” there are on the air waves, the fewer room there is for raunchy underwear ads, or those really stupid things that end up with the couple in matching bathtubs in the middle of a flippin’ forest.

Sometimes I think you guys have WAAAY too much time on your hands.

Dianaiad, I agree that this thread has been entirely too harsh on the LDS church. As others have pointed out, various Protestant denominations (Methodists and the United Church of Christ are two examples) also run commercials to attract new members.

However, I just wanted to point out that the ad you linked to is not connected to the Catholic Church. It was produced by a conservative group of Catholics. Similarly, Catholics for Free Choice, a pro-abortion organization, might produce a political ad but that doesn’t mean that they, or their views, are affiliated with the Catholic Church.

I only mention this because of your comment “So, if you think it is awful of Mormons to do this, kindly write to the Vatican.” Neither the Vatican, nor the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, nor any Catholic diocese was connected to the political ad you mentioned.

But, as I mentioned earlier, there isn’t anything wrong with religious organizations running ads to attract new believers. As far as I know, the Catholic Church runs similar commercials from time to time, but those are aimed at luring back Catholics who have drifted away, rather than recruiting new adherents.

I agree the commercial Dianaiad linked to was not in the same category as the I’m a Mormon campaign currently being shown.

Sort of weird but I dislike the LDS ad because they are not political. I have no problem with any members of a church who form an organization to promote their beliefs in the political arena, which is what the Catholic ad was.

I simply don’t like any churches advertising on TV. I’ve never liked the LDS ads I didn’t like the Methodists ads or the Catholic come home ads. In my mind it puts Christ and the gospel on the same playing field as bankruptcy lawyers, cheesie kitchen gadgets, KY intense and, extenze. And the more churches that join in the TV advertising the more Christianity looks like a product choice. But maybe that’s just me I disapprove of the Disney channel.

Agreed. Anyone who really is researching religious choices would do much better looking on the internet and in books. Conversion to a religion is a PROCESS, not “shell out the dough” and get a product, just as advertised.
