Common Ground between Protestants and Catholics?

Really Manny, I believe we have much more in common than we have in a state of disagreement. Especially Anglicans and Catholics. Especially!
Doctrinal we are different. I think Anglican are more Catholic than other Protestant denominations. I do disagree many of the issues like ordination of women, ordination of gay bishops, accepting the use of contraception.

You have been charitable but others not you who keep spreading lies.
well thats good, I did a addition to my post above, but we posted at the same time. Seriously is something getting you?? 🤷

is it this lies you are speaking about, because ya know and IM not tit for tating but there has been some unacceptance of Protestants here too, to the point Im feeling actually annoyed too. so I guess we can have that in common, we both feel bad.

I seriously considered leaving here but I rather like it when we all talk, and there is alot to learn when were not feeling bad. I think about that and I know its wrong, we are not supposed to be. We all are supposed to be His children, its so frusterating that we (as a whole) cannot get along.

You know I am to consider leaving this forum. I’ve been here for over a year and the debates are nothing more but repetitious arguments…and many new members who aren’t Catholic make their case against the CC. It’s like going in circle again and its becoming very frustrating.

I hear ya Manny. I understand the frustration. But think about this for a second…

If you keep telling someone the same thing over and over could it be that you are just saying it wrong and need to adjust how you say it? Many times I have seen you just lash out (and in a VERY rude way I might add) at protestants with hardly an apology afterwards and then you get upset when they lash back. It is an endless cycle that we need to squash… NOW. No one is going to listen if they feel that they are being attacked. No one. So if you come at them saying ‘your faith is stupid’ (Your response that the only good protestant is an EX protestant falls in this category) how are they supposed to listen to what you have to say?

I had someone tell me that I don’t worship the same God and someone else told me I have no Faith at all. That kind of ended the convo right there and I didn’t have the motivation to hear anything more that this person has to say. It’s like, you get to a point when you see the same person, over and over again, telling you that you are an idiot and you kind of tune them out whenever you see their name and don’t bother to answer them.

NONE of us came to our beliefs and Faith lightly. We didn’t just roll over one day and say ‘I guess I will be protestant’ or ‘I guess I will be catholic’. I don’t come on this board expecting to be praised but I do come to learn and hopefully squash some misconceptions that catholics have about protestants. As long as you keep these things in mind the person just might listen to you. AND if there is someone out there that is particularily annoying you, maybe God is putting them in your face for a reason. Maybe He wants YOU to be the one to show the person their errors about your Faith.😊

sigh thats what Im trying to explain, the reason I do not like “labels” they dont work. Thats why they are for soup cans 😃 **

But labels are also for poison bottles or arsenic cans so sometimes labels are for good aand if the I saw one with that label would I take a chance even just inhaleing could killyou.**

When one sees the name Catholic, Protestant, Baptist, Lutheran, Charasmatic, Pentacostal, immediately the stereotypes flood in. No one takes time to see if its true. We love catagories too much.
**
Well we all, most don’t have our real name we made a imaginary name,ie label for ourselves , in order to hide or protect our identity:p or in my case to be cute dessert is suppose to be desert but that name is taken up so I added a r to it , got kidded alot:p I don’t care. **
This is a quick addition

This is for BOTH sides, and ALL humans, we love these lousy labels.
**As a cradel Catholic now a revert yep I got labeled but it helps people understand where I have been like a bag of luggage 😛 been there done that, you could say labels are racist but it is just organization, now I don’t know if you are black, African A or chinese or what, just because you are in Canada doesn’t ay much these days but I am rather proud to be labeled a RC Just my IMHO Dessert " put a little whipping cream on that"😛 **

As you explain it, that makes labels intreging more like Titles and something is expected inside. 🙂 If we did this more then it would be great. And you can be proud to be a AC, I dont have problems with that, Im just against judging by labels. the down side if you will. I like your side better, and perhaps with carrot cake 😃

ps Canadian, guess were all mixed here too, mine came from Ireland. :irish3:

Blessings and peace be with you all,

I lived in a town that had a history of Christians killing other Christians in long drawn out civil wars. We must learn from history what differences in belief can inspire people to do. Now we are blessed that Christians can actually meet, pray and work together building up the kingdom through our Lord Jesus Christ.

I am a Catholic and I support people with learning disabilities, over the years I have been blessed with opportunities to support these people in Catholic, Baptist, Anglican and Salvation Army churches. I can only say that I have witnessed these other denominations working to bring people to our Lord Jesus. I truthfully believe that when two or three are gathered in any of these churches in the name of Jesus, then Jesus is also there too.

In the spirit of praying for unity through the spirit

Eric

Amen, Eric. Who needs the Catholic Church and all that. Let’s all just be Christians together on our own.

That’s not what he is saying… can we cut the sarcasm here???
Catholics should ALWAYS qualify their ecumenical dialogues and conversations with where the fullness of the Christian faith “resides”. Post Vatican II “ecumenical” dialogues and conversations (a very minor example of which is this thread) that didn’t have caused enough of a problem that the current and last Pope had to issue no less than 2 encyclicals restating where the fullness of the Faith resides. Then the backlash from the release of the encyclicals attempts to paint Rome as the villain in simply restating the Truth. Not true, of course.
And please, spare me your admonishments. My lifelong best friend is non-religious - and I am certain that God will fairly judge him on the good life he leads and whatever the limitations he has that prevent him from becoming actively religious - in whatever faith that he might determine has the Truth to be (which I’m fairly certain would be the Catholic Church if he ever does). That doesn’t ever stop me from presenting the Catholic Church to him as the place where the Truth fully resides (and that’s not 24-7, it’s as the opportunities present themselves, which is quite often actually). And I never offer him “Catholicism-Lite”.
I’ve always figured that there are good and even great non-Catholics who will find a “higher place in heaven” than I will thanks to what’s in their hearts and the lives they’ve lived and God’s all-knowing judgment on their limitations. That won’t be because they found His church on earth, though. And as Catholics we must always perform our job as God’s compasses - pointing to True north, the Catholic Church.

I always thought of the Catholic church as another denomination, now I know its not. Unfortunetely its convincing me it is this hard core big brother that wants nothing to do with anyone, unless its their way.

But then again, its a common scenario, christians jumping on another because they dont follow what a Protestant church says. So I guess that is a common ground, exclusivity is not a Catholic trait.

Religiion does get in the way of God.

Aye, I’m reminded of what Jesus said: “I am the truth.”
The gospels don’t define truth as a list of 5 doctrinal points, 10 doctrinal points, 327 doctrinal points that you must affirm. The gospels define truth as a person – Jesus. A person. Know him, and you know truth. Don’t know him, and it matters not what church you attend.

What was it that Jesus said to the people who preached in his name, and did signs and wonders in his name? Oh yes – “Depart from me. I never knew you.” Those guys had the doctrine down cold, but they did not know truth.

Isaiah chapter 1 – a serious chastizing of Israel for not obeying God’s law. At the end of the chapter, what does Isaiah say that they were supposed to be doing? It wasn’t doctrine. It was love of neighbor.

Micah 6:8 and Hosea 6:6. That is God’s religion. I’d rather have that and be in a Protestant church that not have that and be in a Catholic church. Of course the best situation is to find Micah and Hosea and Isaiah in a Catholic church, but if instead all a person is finding is the people to whom Jesus will say “Depart from me” – hey, I don’t blame him for leaving. I’d leave too!

So, how exactly does Matthew 16 15:19 fit into your view of Jesus’ dictates? And most specifically verse 19 - what exactly is Jesus telling Peter and the Church He is founding upon him? Note Jesus doesn’t give Peter the Keys to the Kingdom and then just tell him to love his neighbor. He gives him SPECIFIC authority and responsibilities. Though loving your neighbor may be the second greatest commandment - it does not constitute the entire Gospel of Jesus Christ. There is much more to Jesus’ DIRECT commands than that. And the Catholic Church stands alone recognizing the completeness of the Gospel of Jesus - not just cherrypicking a handful of verses to justify anything and everything. That’s why it does matter what Church you attend.
(And what Bible you choose to read as well, for that matter. It was no accident that Martin Luther discarded 8 books entirely from the TRUE Bible - he couldn’t reconcile them to the errant way he chose to live).
THAT is GOD’s religion - not the Kumbaya Jesus - the Historic Jesus.

I appreciate it Scott thanks its getting me down.

and as for the greastest commandment, just how doesnt it constitute the gospel of Jesus.

Is there some way to get around things with it??

This is the only thing one needs to know or do, all the rest comes from it.

You are wrong.

Martin Luther discarded those books because they are full of errors and they are NOT the inspired word of God. Sirach has tons of non-Biblical teachings. The book says to divorce your wife if she will not obey you. The Catholic church certainly does not condone that.

Martin Luther didn’t believe the books of james and revelations were inspired either, do you?
