Non-Catholic baptisms are valid – they confer the character of baptism (which is why we do not re-baptize converts unless their baptism is dubious and even then it’s conditional to avoid the sacrilege of attempting to repeat an unrepeatable sacrament) – but they do not avail for salvation, sanctifying grace is not imparted due to the impediment of wrong faith. However, when the heretic comes to the true Faith, he receives the sanctifying grace of his baptism (following First Confession, of course). This is what St. Augustine and St. Thomas were talking about in the quotes I gave.

There is nothing in your quote from these saints to indicate that sanctifying grace of their baptism is not active until they convert to Catholicism. This is really bizarre, to say the least! Even if these saints did specifically say that, which they did not, they are not the Magisterium with the final word on baptism of noncatholics. You have rendered another private interpretation according to VCR-27. This is the second time you have repeated your error. “Thus we do not re-baptize converts but only when they convert do they receive the Holy Ghost and the remission of their sins.”

Do you not read or study other magisterial teachings, Pilgrim? Why is it so difficult to grasp what the Church has always taught? One more reference, FWIW:

You’re right. I didn’t. But now I have.
This is not a true statement. While it is true for a Catholic, it is not true for a Protestant. Baptism outside the Church confers the character but not the effect of the Sacrament. Baptism outside the Church does not confer sanctifying grace and therefore those who receive it do not receive the indwelling of the Holy Ghost.
