I know that there is a limit to the number of times one is supposed to recieve the Eucharist each day, but I’m not sure what it is or where to look for it, so here is my situation.

Next Saturday my sister is being confirmed at the 11am service and I am her sponsor so I will be attending that service. I am also a teacher of a different confirmation class that is being confirmed at the 2pm service, so I will be at that service as well.

Am I allowed to recieve the Eucharist at both services or just one? Thanks!

I presume that these “services” are Masses? (Personally, I cannot abide anyone referring to the Holy Mass as a “service”. Just one of my pet peeves. To me a service is a Protestant Worship Service.)

I do not know of Confirmation being conferred except at Mass. If this is the case, you are perfectly ok with receiving Holy Communion twice. If, for some reason, there is not a Mass for the second Confirmation, then you cannot receive.

The rule is that to receive a second time, the second reception must be at Mass. The first one could have been at a Communion Service, or you might have been a care giver for a home bound person and received when they did, or some other means of receiving outside of Mass.

From The Code of Canon Law:
Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of can. 921, §2.
Can. 921 §1. The Christian faithful who are in danger of death from any cause are to be nourished by holy communion in the form of Viaticum.
§2. Even if they have been nourished by holy communion on the same day, however, those in danger of death are strongly urged to receive communion again.
§3. While the danger of death lasts, it is recommended that holy communion be administered often, but on separate days.

I’ve got a question along similar lines (I don’t quite understand the meaning of the above Canon Law so bear with me).

I went to 6:00 pm Mass, yesterday (Saturday). I received communion. I think this fulfilled my Sunday Obligation, however I went to 8:00 am Mass this morning (Sunday) and also received communion. I would like to attend Mass again today at 6:00 pm at a different parish. Can I receive communion? Would it liturgically be a different day? Can you receive communion 3 times in one day (Saturday 6:00 pm, Sunday 8:00 am, and Sunday 6:00 pm) if not?

Thanks,

Catholig

1 day = a period of midnight-midnight unless otherwise specified. For purposes of receiving Communion you should be fine. But it’s not really necessary nor advisable to receive communion every single time you go to Mass, you know!

So that means, having received communion at 8:00 am this morning I am not allowed to receive it a 6:00 pm Mass?

You are allowed. 6pm Saturday falls within a different day (midnight-midnight period) than 8am or 6pm on Sunday.

I was saying it’s not really necessary or advisable in most cases to receive more than once in any day, though it’s permitted.

I’m unsure why frequent communion would be unadvisable. I mean so long as one is in a state of grace. Then why not?

Because firstly the Eucharist is a privilege and something extremely powerful and special, and should be treated with utmost respect and reverence. Receiving too often can lead to loss of this attitude of respect and reverence.

Secondly it is just* really* unnecessary - like filling up your car with gas and then stopping 2 kilometres down the road at the next gas station to top up on that tiny amount that you’ve used to drive 2 kilometres.

See what happens when they first cut the required fast to 3 hours and then to one hour? 😃

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Keep thinking of food. 🙂

what does that have to do with receiving communion more than 1ce per day? I wouldn’t exaclty say that our lord is a meal.

You’re probably too young to remember but Catholics were once required to have fasted from midnight in order to receive Communion that day. Now I don’t want to sound like a SA but I guess no one thought of fasting twice to receive twice? 😃

C’mon, lighten up, will you? You did your Easter duty, didn’t you? You have fulfilled your requirements per Christ’s promises then.

That’s all I’m going to say. I’ll let you have the final word.

I don’t think it’d be too hard to fast from Midnight to 6:00pm. I mean - most days I don’t eat breakfast, and I don’t eat lunch at school. In fact all I had today was a soda & 12 bacon strips & 2 chocolate chip cookies.

Please at least have a little bit of something healthy when you get up in the morning to set you up for the day!

LilyM,

Thank you for caring. 😃 I feel I eat enough over all, though, so I make up for not having breakfast, or lunch a bit later in the day.

(BTW, I guess I wasn’t completely honest regarding all I had to eat to day - I had a glass of apple juice as well. :o Honestly, however I forgot about this. That doesn’t change my point however…)

Trust me, I come from a family doctors. The timing of your meals is almost as important as the overall amount or the content (although that content sounds pretty dreadful too!)

Just make an effort for two weeks to have something to eat before 10am every day and you’ll see that you feel heaps better for it.

LilyM, I don’t know - maybe I will try to do as you say and eat something before 10 am.

As for the content, I can understand how that sounds pretty dreadful, but did I mention (rhetorical, I know I didn’t) that the cookies came from subway, and that I have a sub waiting in the fridge?

I heard that they began to discourage it because there were times in Church history (probably the Middle Ages) when people were running around all the time receiving Communion as many times as they could during the day, believing that the more times they received, the more likely they would be to get into Heaven. The Church started to put restrictions to remind people that there are other important things to do, such as acts of charity, prayer, etc. that are an important part of Christian life, and if we cut those things out of our life in order to receive Communion every chance we get, this isn’t necessarily a good thing to do. At least this is the explanation I’ve heard. 🙂

:hmmm: depends on the contents of the sub. Some of Subway’s products are fine, some are woeful nutritionwise.

As for the timing of your meals - trust me on this one, lots of research has been done on it.
