I’m sure this has been done to death, but I didn’t see it on the first page here…so please forgive me if this has been covered ad nauseum 🙂

I honestly go back and forth about how I feel about it. I mean, the bishops are right in saying that Catholic politicians should be denied communion if they support abortion. All of us should, and our priests have the right to withhold communion from us if we deviate from such important teachings of the Church.

But still, somehow, the Kerry business seems to be making the Eucharist something political. I don’t think Kerry should receive, and neither should any abortion-supporting Catholic, but I dunno…it just seems so political now.

What do you think?

Don’t think that you are beating this to death. This issue continues to be a very hot issue. Bishops are divided on the answer. There are some on both sides of the issue as you are. I feel that there has not been enough teaching in modern times about the Eucharist. If a person really understood that this is truely," The Body And Blood of Jesus," they would think twice before receiving it in an unworthy manner.

Many left him as they could not bring themselves to believe that he was giving them “His Body and Blood.”

I definitely agree about the unworthy manner part. I dunno, maybe it just was the way they went about it, and well,of course, the timing. I usually try to point out to critics who would say the bishops are hypocritical that we need to applaud when the bishops take such a stand like this.

But still, there’s something about the way it’s been played out in the press that, well, just doesn’t sit right.

What I’m hoping the goal of the bishops is is that they are trying to get the politicians to see the error of their ways and to remind people that the Eucharist is not something to be taken lightly. How can we receive Christ when we allow the innocent to die?

Okay…SOMEONE gave me a negative response on my reputation in this post and I’m not quite sure why 😦

Neither do I. Ignore it.

Hi redkim, it certainly wasn’t me! Even though we disagree. I think it IS political the way this communion issue is being dealt with, and I think that’s shameful.

Of course, Kerry and I agree, so I would think that way, wouldn’t I?

I’m very much interested in tackling Aquinas. Any easy introductions you can offer?

It’s just a funny thing: it’s political and it’s not political at the same time. Some days I want to applaud them for taking a stand; other times I just scratch my head. I mean, it’s not like they are saying anything that’s new.
