Outrage over disrespect of the Eucharist in Costa Rica

The girlfriend of Otto Guevara, formerly a candidate in Costa Rica’s presidential race, stirred up public opinion when she consumed half of the Host at Communion during Mass on election day, and placed the other half of the Host in Mr. Guevara’s pocket.

Oh my goodness. I say keep it in the hand, but end the mis-education (or lack of education) regarding the Eucharist!

That is really weird by the way…

I can see the same problem with Communion on the tongue. I experienced a big disappointment with a lady that would receive in her hand and then place the host in her mouth. In the way to her pew she would pull the host out, break a piece and give it to a young boy. The first couple of times I was not sure of what happened because I assumed that once it is in the mouth nothing weird would happen. Because of that father told me to keep an eye on her if she showed up again and not to give her Communion but to send her to him. Bottom line one day she showed up, I pointed her to father before the Mass. After the homily just before communion he gave a good speech on how to receive communion and what sacrilege is, I have not seen her since. Go figure some people do not like to be told how to respect the Blessed Sacrament.

On November 1st, 1997, at the Call to Holiness Conference in Detroit, Michigan, there was a panel discussion in which Fr. John Hardon was one of the speakers who fielded various questions from the audience. One of the questions was about Communion in the hand. The following is the response of Fr. Hardon:

"We were at concelebrated Mass with the Holy Father, [saying Mass WITH / at the same time] and we were absolutely forbidden to give Communion in the hands. Communion in the hand, Communion in the hand began, in the hand, with the publication of the Dutch Catechism with nobody’s permission except the bishops—in effect, in principle separated themselves from the Holy See. One country after another began then to ask for permission, which the Dutch bishops never asked for, permission to receive Communion in the hand. I was asked by the bishops’ conference to write a defense of Communion on the tongue, and I can again talk for hours.

“In the very, very early Church, Communion was given in the hands. However, as the faith of the Christians weakened in the Real Presence, by the 5th, 6th centuries Communion on the tongue became mandatory—remained mandatory until the present century. Behind Communion in the hand—I wish to repeat and make as plain as I can—is a weakening, a conscious, deliberate weakening of faith in the Real Presence.”

Love and prayers that this practice be abolished.

More than any orther single reason; this practice is the cause of mass defections from the CC based essentially on the lack of belief and understanding of Christ Real Presense. I am also of the opinion that this is a primary cause for fewer vocations to the priesthood and fewer people going to Confession. [If anyone can give commuion, priest are not necessary for Confession. I’ll just go directly to God.]

**PEW Report 2008 **

1970 about 75% of self professed Catholics went to weekly Sunday an Holyday Mass
2008 this number had dropped to less than 25%

1970 same group on Confession about 65% went at least once per year
2008 This number has dropped to about 10%!

In CIH the only reason? Certainly NOT. Is it a primary reason? Absolutely!

Wow…

Lets just hope its her ignorance. But my word! That is stunningly sacrilegious.

Furthermore, in the news story, she is identified as both a girl-friend and a wife. DId I hear that right? She is the presidential candidates girl-friend, and then put the host in her husband’s pocket? What???

And then how she received!!! Yikes!!!

How offensive.

Wow.

I am speechless.

Well, my pastor did a presentation on the history of the church. He used to teach in a catholic university, so I trust his information. He said “in the hand” was abolished during the dark ages, not because of a disbelief in the real presence…but because people believed it so much that they becamse superstitious. They would take the host home and nail it to their doors to ward off vampires, put it in their helmets when they went off to battle, and the like. It was due to abuses of the host because they believed so strongly that it was holy and contained magical powers!

Recently, they’ve allowed it in the hand again. It’s the way it was started, its the way Christ instituted it. A lot of practices of the church changed during the dark ages that were not right, and were fixed to what they “used to be” in Vatican II. The dark ages were a tough time. Things aren’t so tough anymore.

I think we should just educate people how to take communion properly.

I suppose my info could be off, but I’ve heard it straight from a professor-priest that I have a lot of respect for…so it will take a lot of convincing for me to change my mind! 🙂

Maybe a few excommunications might be in order.

And to think our great grandparents fasted from midnight in order to be able to receive.

“Communion in the hand has not been, and will not be accepted by Heaven. This is a sacrilege in the eyes of the Eternal Father, and must not be continued, for you only add to your punishment when you continue on in the ways that have been found to be unpleasing to the Eternal Father.” - Our Lady of the Roses, June 30, 1984
Erm…no “quoting” Bayside, please…

This is a pretty strong statement that needs unequivocal references.

Here are a few profound questions surounding this practice.
  1. Are 100% of EMC’s among the ONLY “10%” of Catholics who go to Confesion at least once per year?
  2. The use of EMC’s" was granted AFTER it had already become mandated practice. I recall an Instruction on the matter from His Holiness John Paul II, somewhere in the 80’s I think that specifically explained that “Extrodinary MUST MEAN PRECISELY THAT!” ertainly everyday, in nearly every church at every Mas is anything BUT Extrodinary." and yet Bishops and priest continue to simply ignore this fact and look the othr way. WHY?
  3. Why in daily mass are there mutiple EMC’s when so few people are in attendance?
There is MUCH more han meets the eye in the continued promotion of this practice.
  1. ALL of the Church laws regarding EMC’s list 1. priest, 2. deacon or 3. ACOLYTE as the people being used BEFORE OTHERS. When is the last time you saw an “Acylote?” if EVER? Could this be because they too are male genger? And what if anything is that telling us?
Dear God help us.

If anyone can direct me to his teaching instruction of Pope JP II, I’d be most appreciative.

Oh my!! Our religous education has really failed alot of people. It is so sad.😦

Wasn’t the first Mass with the Apostles who were our modern day Bishops, and therefore properly ordained? Just wondering…
It’s the way it was started, its the way Christ instituted it.

I suppose somebody has to throw this in the ring, might as well be me:

There are other Rites who only distribute in the hand.

That being said, I think the Real Presence and the reason why the tongue is an option needs to be taught to the faithful.

…Also keep in mind, some priests may prefer CITH because, especially during cold & flu season, the germs on the tongue and having germy people breathe on them (I know Fr. Jonathan Morris, on Fox News, claimed he hated COTT because of this).

I personally would prefer that the indult for communion in the hand was not in place.

Having said that,
21. In approaching therefore, come not with your wrists extended, or your fingers spread; but make your left hand a throne for the right, as for that which is to receive a King. And having hollowed your palm, receive the Body of Christ, saying over it, Amen. So then after having carefully hallowed your eyes by the touch of the Holy Body, partake of it; giving heed lest you lose any portion thereof ; for whatever you lose, is evidently a loss to you as it were from one of your own members. For tell me, if any one gave you grains of gold, would you not hold them with all carefulness, being on your guard against losing any of them, and suffering loss? Will you not then much more carefully keep watch, that not acrumb fall from you of what is more precious than gold and precious stones?

- St. Cyril of Jerusalem (circa 315-386), Catechetical Lecture #23, on the Sacred Liturgy and Communion

Being a small church we do not have a Deacon or Acylote so yes we do use EM and most of us are female. I know I feel very privileged to serve at Mass in my capacity but I would like it very much if we had a Deacon or an Acylote – we had one gentleman before Katrina who is going to be deacon - this December as a matter of fact he will be ordained but he has no idea what church he will be assigned and he did not return to his pre-storm location. At our church it is mainly the women who volunteer to do most of the “helping” in various duties.

Since when does something have to be “in the Bible” before it is worthy of belief? As Catholics, we don’t just “strictly use” the Bible…Tweety, you should know this after all this time 😉

Nonsense. If you’ve got anything contagious, please stay home.

Regarding what I said about “in the hand” being the way it started, the way Christ instituted it…someone said:

Well, I don’t know how to properly reference a lecture I attended…but I know that during the last supper Christ said, “take and eat” and not just “eat.” I don’t think he put the bread directly into the apostles’ mouth. None of our artworks or traditions imply this. They took it in the hand, possibly even passing it around to each other. The early christians did the same thing until it was outlawed by the vatican in the dark ages due to people taking the host home and using it inappropriately. Now its back to the way it was!

I don’t see anything wrong with returning to our roots, and to the way Christ started it. As Catholics, we are fond of tradition and hold great respect for it. This makes perfect sense to me.
