It depends.

Why would you do such?

There is ONE Sunday celebration of the Eucharist (Mass), whether one celebrates it Saturday evening (as allowed) or on Sunday.

In general, no, unless there’s a valid and licit reason, you should only celebrate a given liturgy (in this case, the Sunday liturgy) once.

Priests, of course, who celebrate more than one Eucharist (Mass) for a given Sunday communicate more than once.

I hope someone out there has the correct knowledge about this and can give us the reference source.

I for one go to Church everyday. The only Mass in my Church is 4:30 on Saturday and 10AM on Sunday.

This is conflicting information. For the small group of us who go to Church each day. I would like to know if we are committing an error, or sinning by going to late Mass on Saturday and again on Sunday. HELP!!!

No, you are not.

There are great benefits in going to mass twice and receiving Communion twice in a single day, on even the same day, and I highly encourage it for anyone capable of doing so. 🙂

It is not at all discouraged, any information otherwise is incorrect.

That’s not correct. We can receive twice a day and a third time if there is a danger of death.

Canon Law:

Can. 917 One who has received the blessed Eucharist may receive it again on the same day only within a eucharistic celebration in which that person participates, without prejudice to the provision of can. 921 §2.

Can. 921 §1 Christ’s faithful who are in danger of death, from whatever cause, are to be strengthened by holy communion as Viaticum.

§2 Even if they have already received holy communion that same day, it is nevertheless strongly suggested that in danger of death they should communicate again.

In Canon law…the “number of communions a day canon” is on a 24 hour clock…even though the Sunday Vigil is the Sunday liturgy…

There is nothing that says one can only celebrate a given liturgy once…unless it something like ones…Baptism, or Confirmation!

One may receive 2 x’s a day (24 hour day from midnight to midnight) so long as the second is at a Mass one participates in. So one could actually recieve at the vigil…and then Sunday Morning and then again at a Mass in the evening that one goes to…(unless your dying…then you can receive viaticum…)

No perfectly fine…as per Canon Law of the Roman Church (the Eastern Catholic Churches have their own Law…so hence I say of the Roman rite…)

And: Even though the reception of Communion may be limited, I know no teaching to limit the number of times one may attend Mass (reception not required), as has been (:twocents: incorrectly) asserted.

Don’t ask me to prove a negative – The burden of proving an extraordinary claim lies with the one asserting it.

Thank you all for the clarification on this. I thought I might have been doing something wrong all these years.

Thanks.

No, it’s not an error.

It’s not necessary, you are going to the same celebration twice. Nothing wrong with that, but no requirement for it or benefit apart from personal spirituality.

The Catholic Church. See Canon Law 917.
You said in post #5 that a person may only go to Mass once per day.

You actually say: “There is ONE Sunday celebration of the Eucharist (Mass), whether one celebrates it Saturday evening (as allowed) or on Sunday.

“In general, no, unless there’s a valid and licit reason, you should only celebrate a given liturgy (in this case, the Sunday liturgy) once.”

This assertion is questioned by other posters in posts #'s 6, 10 and 11. In post #15 you say this is supported by Canon 917. This canon says: “One who has received the blessed Eucharist may receive it again on the same day only within a eucharistic celebration in which that person participates, without prejudice to the provision of can. 921 §2.”

This canon does not restrict the number of times one may attend Mass. It restricts the number of times one can receive Holy Communion. It can be received once under any circumstances. It can be received a second time but only during Mass. (The provisions of Canon 921 §2 permit it to be received a third time as Viaticum (of course, this is providing Viaticum has not already been received that day).)

I can offer my testimony that going to mass more than once on the same day, and even more than twice, and so on, is immensely spiritually beneficial.

So too are making acts of Spiritual Communion throughout the day.

There are so many reasons of course, that are easy to think of as to why this all is beneficial. One could spend a good deal of time thinking about as many as possible and never run out.

I will touch on one however small, perhaps not thought of at first. We go to mass and receive Communion imperfectly… so we do not receive all the grace we could, because of our poorness of reception. Because of our poverty of soul overall in virtue.

By going repeatedly, the increased grace can help us appreciate grace itself and change both this and all the other areas of our lives that need changing.

A small reason compared to another opportunity to adore the Lord of Lords and be at Calvary.

Good points. Thanks. My point was that while people are free to go to Mass however often they want, the fact is that there is one Sunday (et. al.) Mass for a given celebration, regardless of how many times the same liturgy is offered.

Yes, people can go to Mass any number of times.

The point is that they by going to one (e.g. Sunday) celebration of the Eucharist, they are fully participating in the Eucharistic liturgy. There is no objective additional benefit from going to other Masses, or receiving communion multiple times at the same celebration. It’s simply a matter of personal piety…which may or may not cohere with Church teaching on the Eucharist and liturgy.
