When Joseph found out that Mary was pregnant with child he did not want anything to do with her. Joseph thinking that Mary was with another man.

But later in a dream an angel came to him and said Joseph, do not be afraid to take Mary as wife, for she has concieved by the Power of the Holy Spirit.

Protestant, here use your common sense…For Common Sense tells us… if Joseph did not want anything to do with Mary because he thought Mary was with another man, Now even more so now that he Found out that Mary had concieved by the Power of the Holy Spirit… After the Dream Joseph knew his ROLE and that would be one such as a protector of the family as well to stop gossip regarding Virgin Mary having a Child without a Husband in thoses days having a child without being married many were stoned to death.

Let me address it this way…Lets say we were Joseph, a good man waiting for the coming Savior. and we were engaged to Mary.
Now we find out that Mary is with Child:o Now we don’t want anything to do with her… we want to put her away FOR OBVIOUSLY she was with another Man, we think… but then we have a dream and angel came to us and told us not to be affraid to take Mary as Wife, for Mary has concieved by the Power of the Holy Spirit and will have the Savior of the World…we all would be in AWE of MARY as was Elizabeth and the child John in her womb… I tell you right there and then we would know our ROLE… If we wanted to put her away for thinking she was with another man… Now Joseph finding out that the Child True Father was The HOLY SPIRIT the TRUE SPOUSE of Mary he would never have intercourse with her… Would YOU? …NO WE WOULD NOT …DEFINITELY WE WOULD KNOW OUR ROLE AS JOSEPH DID. Common sense should tell us all this.

Yes the bible does mentioned that Jesus had Brothers and Sisters but the custom of those days Cousins were also considered brothers. But common sense wins here.

As Mary looked for her Son may she look for you and bring you all HOME.

I think it makes sense.

Eve is the spouse of Adam.
Israel is the spouse of The Father.
The Church is the spouse of The Son.
Mary is the spouse of The Holy Spirit.

She is the new Eve. A personification of The Church.

You know, Eve and The Church (and maybe Israel?) became a spouse at the moment of their creation. Maybe Mary was the spouse of the Holy Spirit at the moment of her creation - and hence it may explain why she is the Immaculate Conception. 🤷 I don’t know… but it makes sense. Who knows; Maybe the 2,000 years of Tradition is right after all.

Or it’s fanciful wishing and bad biblical interpretation mixed with off the wall analogies that was farthest from the mind of the prophets and apostles when they wrote revelation. If Mary was semper virgo, it probably had nothing to do with typology that is not Christ-centered.

At this time in history there is not a Jewish man that was on the face of the earth that would have slept with a woman that had a child not of his loins… Remember the teaching of the Pharisee? They took EVERYTHING literally and were OBSESSED with cleanliness. It really doesn’t matter that the child was of the Holy Spirit… or maybe it does and makes it even more prohibitive.

Remember that Joseph as a Jew was well aware of the prohibition in touching the Ark of the Covenant and as Mary was carrying the child of God… I believe he would be afraid to consummate a marriage with her even if he was so inclined.

At best this argument would be a guess. If a Jewish woman was unclean for a period of time, it didn’t mean they were unclean for eternity. Secondly, Joseph knew she wasn’t unclean and he would’ve divorced her on the spot if he continued to think so after it was revealed to him by the angel that she wasn’t.

At most, any of these arguments are no reason to declare a pious belief de fide.

I see that those who believe otherwise about Mary are thinking from a purely wordly point of view…to think that Joseph and Mary, who witnessed an unparalleled miracle of incarnation through direct intervention of God Himself were nothing but a normal wordly couple reflects the inability of some to think beyond the physical world and their inability to think of the awe this creates in human hearts…as if it happens on a daily basis… this makes some priests , nuns, and monks more elevated spiritually than the people who witnessed the miraculous incarnation through the direct intervention of God.

The incarnation has nothing to do with an effect upon normal marital relations. Thinking worldly is certainly bad. Thinking gnostically is just as bad.

I think when you look at marriage as God’s institution, and a parallel with Christ being the bridegroom and the church being the bride, and the command to be fruitful and multiply, and 1 Cor 7 being a husband and a wife in sexual relations, and the revelation that a man is to leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and Eve as being the helpmate of Adam, … I think a godly marriage between Mary and Joseph brings much glory to God.
Children are a blessing from the Lord, and I beleive Joseph and Mary received additonal blessings of children from God.

It makes a lot of sense to me.
It is beyond me why some folks seem to believe that the Virgin Mary conceived other children.

Please read Matthew 1:24-25.

24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

What does UNTIL mean to you?

If Mary were the “spouse of the Holy Spirit”, that would make Jesus the “Son of the Holy Spirit” instead of being the Son of God the Father.

If Mary is “the new Eve”, then how can Jesus properly be called the new “Adam” as Paul referred to Jesus?

Strange and conflicting theology to say the least.

this is why i refered to this thinking as wordly…to think that normal people (monks/priests/nuns) who denied themselves to God are more elevated spiritually than Joseph and Mary who witnessed the divine intervention of God , the Incarnation, and who held in their hands the Word incarnated into Mary is a reflection of a wordly thinking where physical needs simply cannot be offered for more elevated truth…but after all, this is my opinion influenced by the Eastern spiritualism of a church that existed in the first centuries …i guess i must be an American born into the 20th century to have a spirituality based on normal physical realities…

I do not think that monks/nuns/priests are more holy than anyone else. In many cases they are less holy than the mother who stays at home with her children and cares for them, nurtures them and raises them in the Christian faith

And to think that the miraculous event of the incarnation made the holy couple stop marital relations is bizarre and has no warrant from the writings of the apostles. It comes from the unbiblical notion that the marriage bed is somehow defiled by married couples being intimate with each other. Indeed, the marriage bed is holy.

Again, bizarre gnostic notions of the material being tainted.

Just out of curiosity, do any religions besides the Catholic Church teach that Jesus had no siblings? I was raised in the Lutheran Church, and while I don’t remember anyone making a big deal about whether or not Jesus had brothers or sisters, I always assumed that he did. When the question was raised in RCIA, everyone looked at me like I had two heads.

haha

The Lutheran church does not teach that Mary had other children, or that she didn’t have other children. Scripture makes no absolute positive or negative statement here. It is to the freedom of the Christian conscience.

Ok, applying common sense to the perpetual Virginity of Mary.

Would YOU want to be a younger sibling of Jesus? Talk about pressure to "live up to big brothers achievements:rolleyes:

Mary was visited by an Angel of God and told of the good news that was to be bestowed upon her. Did she understand the Entire meaning behind it all?, probably not, but she knew that she conveived in her womb withOUT the aid of a man and this was from God. Just imagine how differently St. Joseph probably looked upon Mary as well. The Holy Spirit decended upon her and then she conveived, was he then to start sharing the marrital bed with her after the birth of Jesus? Would YOU want to?

God the Father entrusted to our Blessed Mother Mary and St. Joseph the awesome responsiblity of bringing into the world and rearing the Son of God. Every moment of their lives was dedicated to this mission of love.

IF Mary had had other birth children, then there might (even to this day) be questions as to whether it was from an overshadowing of the Holy Spirit that she conceived or from St. Joseph.

And finally, the bible does not say that Mary gave birth to other children, yes many others were called the “brother” of our Lord, but as anyone knows, that has more then one meaning. Could be cousin, step-brother or no family relationship at all. The Baptist church down the road from me addresses their pastor as BROTHER Scott, and surely not all 600 or so are birth children of his mother. Are we not all brothers and sisters in Christ?

Blessed Mary EVER Virgin, why is that so hard to believe and why is it so important to try and tear down? Mary remaining ever virgin only ADDS to the greatness of our Lord, it does not destract. But then, everything about our Lady leads to Jesus and a greater love of God.👍

am not comparing vocations…our perception of things differ according to our knowledge of truth and our behaviours differ according to our knowledge…when Peter questioned Jesus’ death, Jesus was very clear that Peter was thinking in human terms and rebuked him …if Peter knew, he wouldn’t have thought in a wordly manner, yet his thinking/behavior seemed the logical behaviour from a wordly point of you yet he was severly rebuked by Jesus…see how our perceptions are affected by our knowledge…the more we know, the more we are free, the more our behaviours reflect the truth we know, the more we understand …we are talking about the Incarnation of the Word here through the chosen Mary, a miracle by God’s direct intervention through Mary…maybe we have a different perception of the importance of the Incarnation ? or maybe our reverence to this history changing miracle is not the same?
And to think that the miraculous event of the incarnation made the holy couple stop marital relations is bizarre and has no warrant from the writings of the apostles.

What does UNTIL mean to you?

God Bless!
Luke 20:43
For David himself in the Book of Psalms says: 'The Lord said to my lord, "Sit at my right hand UNTIL I make your enemies your footstool."'

**How about after? **
**Do his enemies eventually win? **
Does he sop sitting at the right hand?

2 Samuel 6:23

**. . . the daughter of Saul had no child UNTIL the day of her death." **
Did she have a child after she died?

1Cor 15:25

**"For He must reign UNTIL **He has put all His enemies under His feet."
How about after? Does it stop?

1 Tim 6:14
"…that you keep the commandment without stain, blameless UNTIL the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ"
When Jesus comes back, do we still obey the commandment?

Deut 34:6

**Moses died, “…and no one knows his grave 'UNTIL this day.” **
Have we found Moses’ grave?

Tell me, Emerald - what does “UNTIL” mean to YOU?
