Companies Ban ‘Christmas,’ Not Worried About Backlash

Several retailers have joined in the push to ban the use of “Christmas” in their in-store promotions and retail advertising. The new push to eliminate “Christmas” and replace it with “Happy Holidays,” “Season’s Greetings,” etc. is gaining ground with several retailers participating.

So far, this year’s list includes Kmart, Sears, Kohl’s, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target, Costco, and Wal-Mart.
A Petition To Stop The Ban On The Use Of “Christmas” By Major Retailers

I am offended by the move to ban “Christmas” by major retailers. I care enough to take into consideration the actions of any company which bans “Christmas” when I do my shopping. If they don’t care if they offend me, there are other companies that do with whom I can do business.

This doesn’t offend me. If anything, I think it’s more honest of them as they are not christian companies. Why should they have to write “Christmas” into their advertising? There is more than one religious holiday during this season and 90% of the holiday stuff they sell is very generic. You really don’t see much more than the token nativity scene on the back shelves. The rest is snowmen, santa, disney, reindeer, trees, snowflakes, pinecones, candles, ect…

This is a chance to send a message to retailers that our Christian heritage is important and that we want it to be present in our society not the secular alternative.

Frankly I dont care how they adrvertise/promote Christmas. They are a store and serve a large diverse community. They mean no offense by Happy Holidays or seaesons greetings-they are just acknowledging that many people do not celebrate a religious Christmas and that Other Holdiday occur at the same time-Hanakuh for instance.

I own my own business and we ran onto this problem years ago. i have a large percentage of Jewsih and Muslim Clients. I was faced with two choices-either send out Christma cards and delete them from the list OR send out a generic Card-for the last 20 years our cards have said “Seasons Grettings” and not only has no one called for a boycott of my firm-no one has even complained.

I don’t see this as eliminating Christianity from our society but as an acknowledgment that they serve people of various faiths during this time of the year. As long as all faith traditions are fairly represented, I see nothing to be alarmed about. After all retailers aren’t in the business of promoting religion but of selling products to everyone in our communities. It’s their business how they want to entice their customers in their advertising. I’d only object if any symbols of the Christian faith were used inappropriately, such as the Holy Family singing and dancing about the glories of their latest products and that sort of thing.

Is this really the way to send a message about our faith? If we force someone (or retailer) to write “Christmas”, how is that going to further their desire to support christians?

I’d rather they be honest and use these words with sincerity. Otherwise it’s just another politically correct bit of buzz.

If there had been no Christmas they would not be serving up the sales. Christmas is a boon to retailers. Most make their years profit during this season.

The US still is majority Christian (approx 80%). The serving other faiths is simply being politically correct, and that’s the point!

I completely agree!

No one said force - persuade is more what we are talking about.

I agree that this is no big deal. I’ve written AFA to give this topic a rest, maybe other’s should too. I certainly support most of what they do, but this is crazy. It would be different if they were banning Christians from their store or refusing to sell Christian items, but all they want to do is say Season’s Greetings or Happy Holidays. Life’s too short for this…

That is precisely why we are where we are today.

Why bother. Just be Happy!

This is what complacency breeds. The Death of Outrage!

I’m not complacent and I often get outraged, I just don’t think saying Merry Christmas is the key to all our current cultural problems. How about abortion? or fornication? or lack of morals? or divorce? or birth control? or lack of parenting?

This is really a non issue. I, myself, as a Catholic Christian say Merry Christmas. I send out noticably Catholic Christmas cards to EVERYONE on my list. I have enough to do fighting the lack of knowledge of the Catholics around me who contracept or think women should be priests. So please take your condescension someplace else.

God bless and MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone! 😃

I’m not a complacent person. I was outraged over Walmart’s squashing of free speech by telling their employees they couldn’t use the term “Merry Christmas” and was glad when they stopped it.

But I’m not going to get outraged because some company doesn’t want to write the word christmas. That’s their choice.

Posters forgive me. I am just passionate about the way secularism eats around the edges before consuming the pie. I do not wish to be condescending in any way.

I’m mighty annoyed by that secular habit too. I don’t think anyone faults you for that concern, they just don’t agree that is neccessarily what is happening in this particuliar instance.

I agree about secularism, but I’m not sure that’s what this is. And passion is good! 👍

No, it’s called pickng and choosing your battles. Fight everything that comes along, pretty soon no one cares about what you have to say.

There are two really good books out on what is happening:

The New Anti-Catholicism: The Last Acceptable Prejudice

Persecution

You will see the systematic attack on Christianity. I am fighting this attack on many fronts.
Well, this explains a lot. Not that there isn’t any persecution of Catholics or Protestant Christians in our culture, there is. But, this isn’t a case for that. Really, if you begin to see conspiracies in everything sooner or later you will go crazy. This advertising slogan thing is not a battle that has to be fought over. If retailers, of their own free will, decide to use the phrases Happy Holidays and Season’s Greetings, that is up to them. No one is coercing them into doing this, you know. They are reaching out to customers of all faiths, even if they do earn most of their money from Christmas sales. Now, if the government had mandated that they couldn’t use the word Christmas at all, then we’d have a very good reason to be concerned. And no, the government isn’t going to do that. There are too many safeguards in our laws for that to happen.

But they are being coerced - by political correctness.
