I personally wish that people could wish people what they wanted too. If they feel like saying happy holidays, thats fine, if thats what they want to. If they want to say Merry Christmas, that’s great. Forcing someone that is not Christian to say Merry Christmas does seem a bit strange.

On the other hand, it is quite obvious that Christmas ornaments are such, and that people are buying gifts for Christmas, so yes, stores saying Merry Christmas and that they are having Christmas sales would be much less infuriating. In essense all they are saying is, “If you celebrate Christmas, buy your gifts here,” and it would be disingenuous to not admit that.

Then again, I am still upset about the whole BC/BCE, AD/CE thing. That feels like a major insult.

Guess we can’t say “Happy Easter” either.
Why would a Christian want to call a Saxon goddess happy?

Business is business. If you don’t like their policies, don’t do business with them.

Inclusiveness is important for modern retailers. I see all sorts of statistics thrown around, but the reality in my home town is that, though Christians may form the single largest religious block, they do not make up the majority of the population. Certainly not active, churchgoing Christians. We have a very large Sikh population here, as well as Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Wiccans, First Nations who follow their traditional ways, Buddhists, Taoists… "

Season’s Greetings" simply acknowledges that fact that most faiths have a holy tide around the winter solstice. It has nothing to do with removing Christ, it’s about making members of all faiths welcome.

Contrary to what some here appear to think, this move has nothing to do with being anti-Christian or wanting to secularize society. It’s about broadening the customer base.

It’s a lot easier (and more cost effective) to put up a few “Season’s Greetings” signs than an endless parade of

Merry Christimas
Happy Haunakah
Blessed Ramadan
Happy Yule
Joyous Winter Solstice…ad nauseum

So why was “Christ” there in the first place? Also why dont they leave “Seasons Greetings” up all year, Im sure that there is some important holiday for some religion every day of the year. Also why do they remove the signs and decorations on Dec26? Oh, yea, what about Santa, they still put him up all over? AKA ST NICHOLAS.

Your not making sense here, the definition of “broadening the base” IS secularizing.

Oh, please. If you knew how much garbage is thrown away everyday you wouldnt say that. NOT to mention the millions of dollars going to advertising.
Merry Christimas

Why is all the stuff taken down on Dec26? WHY do the stores prepare for a HUGE line of customers returning things days after Dec25?

I say- let the secular stores have their “Happy Holidays”, and good riddance! That’s not what MY Christmas stands for, anyway. Greed and materialism? So what! I like this much better. The “Winter Holidays” are for the secularists and the neo pagans, and Christmas will be, once again, the sole property of Christ loving Chriatians!!! AMEN!!!

my:twocents:

(No offence to Jews, Muslims, etc. they can have Haunnaka, etc. without secular inclusion, also. Yea!)

First off, I would never buy from any retailer who uses the generic “Happy Holiday” or “Seasons Greetings”. As soon as I saw those words or had any employees say those words to me, I would walk out of the store. I will only buy at retailers who use the words “Merry Christmas”. It’s the birth of Jesus who gives us the day off anyhow!

I will only be shopping at our Catholic Bookstore for gifts. I will also only buy very limited gifts. We need to return Christmas back to its spiritual meaning rather than worshipping consumerism and materialism.

I am tired of using politically correct terms. I am not ashamed of my faith nor will never comprimise my faith. Being Catholic is who I am & is a big part of me which I am proud. I will only greet others by using the words “Merry Christmas”.

This is who I am and if others don’t like it; too bad!!

Wow! A lot of passionate people here!

Yes, a lot of businesses do the majority of their sales during this time of year, but I think it is because we have bought into their commercializaiton(?) of Christmas. I honestly cannot believe that any other religion would be willing to have their holy days treated as badly as we treat the Christmas “season”.

We can’t wait for the decorations to be displayed in September or after Halloween. We can’t wait for Black Friday sales. Do you know how incredibly busy stores are on Christmas Eve? I do, because usually have to work on that day. There are stores and movie theaters that are open on Christmas (and Easter). Restaurants as well.

After all of this, how many of these people will actually attend church on one of these days?

I think not buying into the commercialization of Christmas would be a better use of any protests, IMHO 😉 . After all, do we really need to buy that artificial tree in September? And I don’t want to spend hours after the store closes on Christmas Eve cleaning up after customers who have no clue about what Christmas is truly about. If they did, they wouldn’t put us through what they put us through (yelling, cursing, throwing things all over the place). I can put up with it any other time of year, except on this day.

For all those who will be refusng gifts bought at stores that dont mention Christmas pleae send me a private message and Ill send you my address. Ill be glad to take them off your handshttp://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon7.gif

SEASONS GREETINGS TO ALL!

I think one of the points being missed is that why is there a “holiday” season to begin with? Christmas has been a BIG BIG deal. Obviouslky God gave us a great gift by becoming incarnate and living among us. The FEAST day does fall at a great time during the very beginning of winter and would give great cheer for people. Why should we have to apologize for that?

Now where I see the naysayers on boycotts point about Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings, they do lose points when thinkgs that are defintely associated with Christmas are secularized: Holiday Tree in Boston, Holiday ornaments at Sam’s Club. Now this is not being inclusive because neither Hannukah nor that made up ethnic fest use the tree or ornaments. Neither use red and green as colors so they really are not Holiday M & Ms are they?

Christmas has been a blessing both to Christian and non-Christian businesses and why should people run away from it? Bill O’Reilly is right when he says that stores should use ALL the greetings including MERRY CHRISTMAS in their decore and ads.

Look at what has happened to All Hallow’s Eve, Christmas has wrongly become too much commercial festival but when the religious aspects and symbols are challeneged it is that much closer to being an orgy. At least having the mangers and carols reminds people of the REAL reason for the season, now we are being force fed political correctness.

There is a culture war and I think it is one thing for a business to try and ride the fence a la O’Reilly’s suggestion but to remove “ALL Christmas” puts them in a place that does offend some of us. Isn’t the whole point of thise so they do NOT offend customers?

When my husband told me about this. I spoke to all my students about the importance of letting everyone know that we are celebrating the Christmas season. I have instructed them to simply say Merry Christmas with a smile and nice and loud for everyone to hear.

Thank you for posting the petition site. I always wish I could do more when I see this attack on Christianity.

Well as have stated before i am not about to join in a boycott of stores and businesses that use “happy holidays”. or some other euphanism for Christmas. However last night i found a positive way to make the point. We ate at a chain Restaraunt and the young lady who served us wrote thank you and “happy holidays” on our Check. I scratched out the Happy Holidays and wrote MERRY CHRISTMAS and left a 30% tip. Now which do you think would have had a bigger impact-leaving a nasty note and no tip OR what I did? As we left I saw her showing my revised ticket to the other wiatresses and she had a big grin on her face.

Way to go! 👍

Maybe we should take the money we were to spend on Christmas presents, decorations, etc and give it to the charity of our choice.

I think you have to examine your conscience. The Bible says if to you it is a sin, then it is sin–this was in discussing meat offered to idols.

I worked at Target several years ago and the artificial Christmas trees came in earlier than they had expected. They didn’t want to decorate them so early (this was September) so they decorated them instead with HALLOWEEN decorations! Talk about an uproar! Customers were VERY upset and the store ended up taking them down.

Last year when Target announced it would no longer allow the Salvation Army to locate at its stores, many people whom I know chose not to shop there any more. My best friend and I both wrote letters to the corporation, and of course it made not one wit of difference, but at least we felt we were doing the right thing.

The bottom line is the stores are going to do whatever they think will enhance PROFITS. It’s all about the money.
