The mega-million dollar plan is to use commercially built robotic ships to squeeze rocket fuel and valuable minerals like platinum and gold out of the lifeless rocks that routinely whiz by Earth. One of the company founders predicts they could have their version of a space-based gas station up and running by 2020.

At the risk of sounding cynical, I think they’d better get moving quickly on this, before the EPA puts asteroid mining regulations in place.
 
Can you imagine the insurance premium for accidently sending the asteroids towards earth?

haha, hilarious Jim. But the EPA can’t regulate something outside of US territory. Furthermore, asteroids are not in our environment.
 
We are running out of it that we’ll end up taking it from out Earth. 🤷 I wont be surprised if someday man decides to explode planets!

Since asteroids don’t have an atmosphere, there isn’t much of an environment to protect.

Perhaps you underestimate the inventiveness of the bureaucracy. The EPA already has an entire section of regulations governing mining. Do you really think that the fact of extraterrestriality would bother them?
 
This administration will probably give them a billion-dollar subsidy. Why not?
 
Too bad the GOP didn’t choose Gingrich. Then we may have had a moon base in 8 years. . . . 😦
