First of all, let me say that I am the sort of person who is heavy into research. If I’m curious about something, I’ll ask questions, and I will also look it up online or otherwise. Having said this, I will state my case below.

I have no idea why the Muslim radicals hate America. I don’t know why their goal is to cause death and destruction. This is why I am reading the Koran.

Now, I can understand why many would object to this, but my faith in Jesus is pretty strong at this point, and after some of the things I’ve seen and heard, I don’t think I’m going to becoming a Muslim any time soon. I like being Catholic, and I feel a silent strength and a quiet pride in being who I am, because being Catholic is a part of who I am.

I just want to know why. It’s driving me crazy. I want to know why they do what they did. I want to know where, exactly, in the Koran (also spelled Quran) that it states, “Thou shalt destroy thy neighbor.”

I’ve been told that the Koran is a peaceful book. I’ve also been told it’s the work of the devil. I don’t want to take either side until I’ve read that darned thing cover to cover. At the same time, I will continue to go to Mass, pray my Rosary, and hope that one day, there will by a day that Muslims and Christians can live together in peace, because even though the Muslims are mistaken in what God they worship, I’m so sick of the fighting, death, and pain that I dread turning on the news.

Our men are fighting for a great cause, and these people attacked us for no reason at all. I want to know why. Thus, this is the reason why I’m reading the Koran. And if I am sinning, if doing this is wrong, God forgive me. I’m only trying to bridge the gap in my mind that ties Islam and terrorism together.

I will try to tell you of my findings when I am through, and don’t worry: I’m also in the process of reading The New American Version of the Holy Bible for Catholics, as well. There is no way that I will neglect my faith, simply on the basis that I want to understand. God is too important for me to ignore.

Sincerely,
Tiffany

Tiffany, there are many Catholics that study religion broadly. I have read the Qur’an and I found many parts uplifting. Muslims show a reverence for God that many Christians lack in quality. However, they have a problem in dealing with truth as they see it. The most zealous among them can find support in the Qur’an to spread their belief over all the earth in any way possible; even if it means killing people.

Thresh the Qur’an and find the truths contained therein. Then move on in search of more truth. There are so many things to learn in this life. Study the lives of all the Saints. Study all of the Early Church Fathers. Real the other holy books.

I have a different take on one thing you stated. To me Allah is God and God is Allah. There is only one God and no other. Islam teaches many truths, but it is lacking in the most precious truths. I don’t understand why mankind would prefer to create new religions, but we seem very proficient in doing so. Muslims are our brothers and sisters and they need our love just as everyone else does.

The Koran isn’t interpreted like the Bible. The Bible, properly interpreted, has no contradictions. The Koran, though, does. They apply a rule to such instances, though, in that the “later” verse between the two contradicting verses, takes precedence over the first, i.e. abrogates the first (makes it not count). For example, there’s a verse in Surah 2 somewhere, that speaks towards religious tolerance of all faiths. This was probably written when Islam was just starting and they were a minority surrounded by many pagan religions. Surah 9:5, on the other hand, says that they should “slay the unbeliever wherever he is found.” That one takes precedence. And, therefore, it isn’t so much the “radical” Moslems who want to kill us all. It’s those who are faithful to the Koran. And I have heard it said that approximately 85% of the mosques in the U.S. are funded by what we call “radical” Moslems overseas.

Oh Tiff its like any other Faith. Its not the word its how that persons see’s the word. Alot of it has our truth. Their God is our God. The God of Abraham.

But what happened to the best of my knowledge is they believe that the world there is one one true Religion. Moses and Jesus were limited in time and space. God sent Moses and Jesus to the Children of Israel, but Muhammad came with a mission to the whole world.🤷 Go figure!

They fell he is the last prophet Ut us a mixture of the Jewish and Christian beliefs.

I do not believe you will find your answer in the Koran, but in the culture and traditions of Islam.
I have a vague memory of the US being invited to Saudia Arabia and not leaving(as a guest should).

I have not read the quran, but as to what I do know, all muslims can read the quran, ie whether their language is arabic or not, but only those who know arabic can understand it. When I asked some of my friends for some interpretations of the quran they could only recite it but said they do not understand it. Hence they have to use the translations.

Also most dont understand the quran without using the Hadiths ie some other books written by companions of Mohammed.

Another thing which I cannot accept from the Quran is that its calling the Crucifiction of Jesus a lie, ie according to their Allah, its a lie, as it never took place. If that is to be taken as truth than Christianity is a false religion. Isnt it?

God Bless and guide you in your research.

I have no idea why the Muslim radicals hate America.
1 America supports Israel against the Palestinians.
2 America had troops stationed in Saudi Arabia.

There is more to it than that but those two seem to me to have been the most important.

The Quran could be interpreted in thousand ways . and no muslims would completely agree on everything in the Quran . You wanna find the drive behind terrorists attacking america is basically feeling injuctice by US foreign policy and handling this injustice in the wrong way.

There are two main reasons

1- Support for Israel
2- Support of dictators as long as they serve US interests

Simple as that .

But as these issues are very sensitive and are core of american supremacy ( non negotiable) then the subject should be deflected to Islam. The Fact is that terrorists have existed with and without Islam . Its just recently because all secular terrorists have really moved on and the arab world lost hope on secular peace that religion started taking the place.

The cause is not Islam … Islam … like any other faith… can be taken to extremes by someone who wish to do so . Search for why people feel injustice and you will get the truth.

Other wise you are just a part of the charrade in which only americans believe .

Good Luck man ,

I too; took an interest in reading the Quran, what turned me away from it, was its historical teaching of “Lie-ing and deception”, to be a “good virtue”, that was practiced from its histoical leaders and encouraged.

I have a very hard time believing in the One God that encourages Lie-ing, a good virtue to practice and hate one’s enemy. Which conflicts with one of the commandments from our One God, and conflicts with their prophet Jesus and our Savior and Lord Jesus who taught us to “love your enemy”.

I must admit as another poster posted the muslims reverence of God is to be commended. As far as interpreting the Quran? you will find from their diversed cultural communities and ethinicity that there is not one interpretation of the Quran. If your going to study a Quran, you might take note from which ethnic group is interpreting the Quran?

Peace be with you

I saved you some research and listed the chapters for you from the Quran and their Haddith traditions.

(Koran) Qu’ran – allows its followers to Lie and deceive as a virtue of Islam

Taqiyya = lying against unbelievers is a virtue and a religious duty according to the Qu’ran, Haddith (tradition), Islamic Law

Qu’ran

Sura 16:106 Establishes that there are circumstances that can “compel” a Muslim to tell a lie

Sura 3:28 This verse tells Muslims not to take those outside the faith as friends unless it is to “guard themselves”

Sura 40:28 A man is introduced as a believer, but one who must “hide his faith” among those who are not believers

Sura 2:225 “Allah will not call you to account for thoughtlessness in your oaths but for the intention in your hearts”

Sura 66:2 “Allah has already ordained you ( O men), the dissolution of your oaths” Taken collectively these verses are interpreted to mean that there are circumstances when a Muslim may be “compelled” to deceive others for a greater purpose.

Haddith tradition

Bukhari 52:269 The prophet said, “War is deceit” after he murdered Ushayr Ibn Z arim and his 30 unarmed men, by Muhommads men, after he guaranteed them safe passage.

Bukhari 49:857 “He who makes peace between the people by inventing good information or saying good things, is not a Liar, “Lying is Permitted when the end Justifies the Means.

Bukhari 84:64-65 (Speaking from a position of Power) Ali- confirms that “ lying is permissible in order to deceive an enemy”.

Bukhari 52:271 Ka’bbin Al- Ashraf at Muhommads insistence, his men dishonestly gained Ka’bs trust in order to bring him out of hiding, by stating there no longer are Muslims, and then brutally assisinated him.

I am sorry Miserys Fence, I checked your sight; I try never to fill my mind with such negative propagandas.

I hope your intention was not to prove the New Testament teaches Christians to “stealth, decieve, lie and conquer ones enemies”? When it teaches we are to proclaim the Truth from the housetops.

In any case, you gave this negative group a plug here and it does not give this Catholics view point nor reveal the mission of the Church of Jesus Christ.

Peace be with you

S. 9:29 would be of most interest to you in that regard. 🙂

I got in a conversation with a Muslim about that verse some time ago. He kept arguing, “Fight doesn’t always mean fight!” I kept pointing him to the verse, where the context of “fight” was clearly military in context. He simply kept repeating the argument (a common tactic when you have none), even though the context of S. 9:29 (and the ninth surah in general) is clearly military in context.

EDIT: On another note, if you wish to compare it with the Bible, keep an eye on what it talks about in regards to Christ. While not all the time, much of the time Christ is only spoken of as an argument against Christianity (such as the infamous “Christ was crucified like you think He was” passage in S. 4:157).

It’s a common tactic when Islam comes under attack: change the focus to Christianity. You’ll say, “Oh, look what the Quran, the actual religious text of Islam, says,” and someone will say, “Oh! Look what these Christians hundreds upon hundreds of years after the time of Christ did!” In the field of logical fallacies, that’s most often known as a non sequitor. Essentially: “I don’t really have a response for A, so I’m going to try to subtly change the subject to B.”

Can you cite the line in the Koran discussing the crucifixion?

Can you cite the line in the Koran discussing the crucifixion?
The Quran clearly teaches that Jesus did not die by crucifixion.

“And because of their saying: We slew the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, Allah’s messenger - they slew him not nor crucified him, but it appeared so unto them; and lo! those who disagree concerning it are in doubt thereof; they have no knowledge thereof save pursuit of a conjecture; they slew him not for certain”.

S. 4:157 Pickthall

Commentary from Altafsir:

And for their saying, boastfully, ‘We slew the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, the Messenger of God’, as they claim: in other words, for all of these [reasons] We have punished them.

God, exalted be He, says, in repudiating their claim to have killed him: And yet they did not slay him nor did they crucify him, but he, the one slain and crucified, who was an associate of theirs [the Jews], was given the resemblance, of Jesus.

In other words, God cast his [Jesus’s] likeness to him and so they thought it was him [Jesus].

And those who disagree concerning him, that is, concerning Jesus, are surely in doubt regarding, the slaying of, him, for some of them said, when they saw the slain man: the face is that of Jesus, but the body is not his, and so it is not he; and others said: no, it is he.

They do not have any knowledge of, the slaying of, him, only the pursuit of conjecture (illā ittibā‘a l-zann, is a discontinuous exception) in other words: ‘instead, they follow conjecture regarding him, that which they imagined [they saw]’; and they did not slay him for certain (yaqīnan, a circumstantial qualifier emphasising the denial of the slaying).

I would interpret that as saying that they neither slew nor crucified the actual Christ, merely his physical form.

I’m not sure how much you know about islam & the koran.

The koran denies Jesus Christ is the Son Of God
The koran denies Jesus’s divinity
The koran denies Jesus’s Crusifixion
The koran ignores everything about Jesus - EXCEPT -

It mentions the Virgin Birth, - although it’s twisted and it’s nothing like it’s written in the Bible
It mentions Jesus spoke as an infant and He said He is Allah’s slave
It mentions Jesus as a child made clay birds & gave them life
It mentions Jesus is ONLY a prophet of allah

While they have much truth. There is more they do not have.

They reject the mystery of the Incarnation.

There is one Muslim sect which admits Jesus was really crucified. But they hod that he was not dead when he was taken from the cross.

It mentions the Virgin Birth, - although it’s twisted and it’s nothing like it’s written in the Bible
No its not twisted

and difference is that in islam Mary wasnt married, and she never got married…Jospeh doesnt exist

The Orientalist scholar Bernard Lewis has written extensively about this. Here is an article on the roots of anti-Americanism in the muslim world.

Here’s an excerpt from the article (emphasis mine):

*Islam is one of the world’s great religions. Let me be explicit about what I, as a historian of Islam who is not a Muslim, mean by that. Islam has brought comfort and peace of mind to countless millions of men and women. It has given dignity and meaning to drab and impoverished lives. It has taught people of different races to live in brotherhood and people of different creeds to live side by side in reasonable tolerance. It inspired a great civilization in which others besides Muslims lived creative and useful lives and which, by its achievement, enriched the whole world. But Islam, like other religions, has also known periods when it inspired in some of its followers a mood of hatred and violence. It is our misfortune that part, though by no means all or even most, of the Muslim world is now going through such a period, and that much, though again not all, of that hatred is directed against us.
