Believe me, I’ve tried to fit in, but barring a full personality change, I won’t. I’m not a little ultra submissive woman who has no opinion of my own, so I don’t fit into the youg adult woman’s group. And it’s their loss, because they whine about being boring while not being open to ideas. Duh. And the funny thing is, I have a TON of friends elsewhere, they just aren’t Catholic. So church for me is just a place where I go for an hour a week, race out so I can catch my bus, and shake the dust off from my four inch stilletos so I can go places where I REALLY want to be. 🙂
Hmmm… I know where you are coming from believe me but I want you to think about something. I’m also a very independent woman. I have traveled all over the world often on my own because no one wanted to come with. I live on my own and pay all of my expenses. I also have a strong personality that gets me into trouble sometimes. The older I get though the more I realize that I have to compromise and yes sometimes submit to others. Wearing a tough shell is not a good way to make friends , sometimes you have to be vulnerable because that is the way that people can relate to you, to see your humanity.

I think it’s great that you have many interests and lots of friends. I’ve always tried cultivating a varied group of friends or at least acquaintances. Let me tell you though, it’s so very nice to have strong Catholic friends who understand the spiritual part of you and the deeper you get into the faith the more you need these types of friends. I still have secular friends who I see sometimes but I can’t share a huge part of my life with them because they just give me quizzical looks and think I’m crazy.

As far as making the young adult group fun i don’t really know what to tell you. My group is a prayer and praise group, we read two passages from the bible and sing songs in between for the different persons of the trinity. We also pray out loud freely. After that we usually have a theme presented from a team of two people from the group about different moral and social issues and how it concerns young people. Right now though we are having lectures on St John Bosco since his relic is coming to our church in September and we are going to be in charge of the whole event. We are also organizing a trip to disney world for the parish.

We don’t really do anything that is considered FUN during the sessions but often meet on the weekends for sporting events, dinner, etc We also sometimes go out dancing to a bar or club. We all attend evening mass on Sunday since half the group are ushers for that Mass and often go out for coffee or something afterward. All of these gatherings though are unofficial and not really part of the group since the group is supposed to be a prayer group first and second a service group for the parish for whatever events the pastor needs us to help out with.

Again i’m not saying you have to change your whole personality and maybe that parish is not right for you but I see a lot of you in myself and thought I would offer my opinion.

I like rock music and I’m starting a band…my way of putting my talents to use!

I’ll try to make the music as loud and blaring as possible, too!

And if somebody doesn’t like it,
instead of complaining,
they should just go start their own band.

I love photography! Good for you!

I’ve also always liked Country Singer’s signature. You both sound like interesting people. You’re SURE you don’t fit into Catholic circles? 🙂 Are we Catholics really that stuffy? 🙂
I like most of Monty Python’s work too. 🙂

Hi doanli,

Nice to meet you. What are your favorite subjects to sketch, paint, or photograph? :curtsey:

Awesome that you’re talented in more than one medium. Tried an abstract acrylic painting workshop once … Ended up giving my paintbrushes to a friend. * lol *

As for you waiting to be discovered … Don’t wait! Find your nearest local gallery and pay them a visit. Good luck! 🙂

… And back on topic … as for getting involved in the Church, what I’ve learned is that I can use my solitary talents to help out in my own way. So this past January me and my camera went down to the March for Life in Washington, DC. The mainstream news media barely covered it … so rather than complain, complain, complain … I covered the news myself in my blog.

Links to a couple of the March for Life blog entries can be found by visiting my profile page here at CAF.

I can’t paint or draw people and some animals.

I love drawing and painting landscapes or inanimate objects.

Well, I’m tired of people complaining about other people complaining!

So there! 😉
HA HA HA!!! lol@BILLP. I’m jealous, I wish that I would have thought of that response first.

Wait. You can stil complain about other people complaing about other people complaing, who then complain about other people.

I need more coffee.

If you have an idea in your head for something that should change in your parish that probably means you should be the one to initiate and/or lead the change.

I know a couple who, upon converting to the Catholic faith, realized their parish had NO programs for the youth - so they volunteered to create a youth group. When they realized the people teaching RCIA were ill informed - they volunteered to study and become RCIA teachers. No bible study? No problem, they started working with people to form one.

That’s how we should all be. See a problem? Address it. Fix it.
Its easier said than done sometimes, and I’m afraid, the door swings both ways when it comes to people being ignorant and stubborn. We have now incorporated drums into our Mass, and I can’t stand it. I said something to one of the singer/music directors there, and I was promptly blown off. Not only do the drums annoy me and make me feel like I’m at a nightclub and not at Mass, but its bad drum playing as well. The person who I had spoken to about this matter, told me that she thinks its a good way to attract the youth. Are we worried about competing with the mega church’s out there, or are we there to worship God? I have also saw where my priest came out a couple of minutes before Mass to quiet all of the chatty parishioners down and remind them where they were at, and then he received an ugly hate filled letter from newer parishioners, who basically stated: "Who are you to tell us to keep quiet? How dare you? blah blah blah. There have been other times when I have mentioned things that I would like to help improve around our church, and it has fallen on deaf ears. I do hear where your coming from though, when I look around and see some of the posts that are on here. There seems to be a great many people on here, (not all) that are just complaining to complain.

I have bemoaned the distance between the people who would fit my “clic” quite a few times, albeit in silence. But, c’est la vie, n’est-ce pas?

I handle the challenge the only way I know how: work two jobs and group with the guys when I can. That and fish. But I am trying to get up the gumption to start a bible study or a mens group (perhaps a generic young adult group). The hard part for me is that it would have to be on the weekend, and friday night bible studies arent very popular in a college town.

Hello FidesSpesCarita,

Another way to maybe look at the distance between those of us who if we lived closer together might more easily become good friends is that God wants us closer to Himself than to other people.

Well, maybe the group you’re thinking about could be part Bible reading, part socializing based around a theme, or maybe a different theme every week? I mean to me, even living in Bozeman, Montana would serve as inspiration, with all your great outdoors. How about “Bible Fishing?” You go fishing, and contemplate Bible stories related to fishing … everything from Jonah and the whale to the apostles casting their nets to Jesus walking on the water.

Then you could have a “Bible Mountain Hike” where you head for the hills and contemplate Moses going up the mountain to receive the 10 commandments, Jesus being tempted on the high mountain, Abraham asked to sacrifice Isaac …

Hopefully Someday I’ll be able to travel to Montana !!! The more I post about it the better it sounds. 🙂

Personally, I’ve had enough of people complaining.

Marriage prep is too lenient, there are too many people getting divorced. Marriage prep is to strict, I don’t want to do all that junk.

The priest’s homily is too short. The priest’s homily is too long.

The Church doesn’t speak out on moral issues enough. The Church needs to mind it’s own business.

Newsflash: It ain’t the Church that needs adjustment.

And my favorites:

Why isn’t my parish providing Vacation Bible School for my kids?
Why isn’t my parish providing a single adults group for me?
Why isn’t my parish providing support for divorced people?
Why isn’t my parish doing bible study?
Why isn’t my parish doing more to serve the poor?

Blah blah blah.

Why isn’t your parish doing any of this? Because you are sitting on your duff complaining about it on CAF rather than going over to the parish volunteering to head up any of these ministries.

Rant over

👍

Perhaps some of the parents “complaining” that their church doesn’t have a VBS have to work full time, or can’t adjust their work schedule and can’t meet the time demands of heading up a program. I don’t doubt these parents would gladly donate craft supplies or snacks to a program if one was available for their kids to attend. There are plenty of ways to contribute.

The options is have their kids in nothing or send them to the summer program of a church of a different faith. And try again next year.

But unless they are free M-F 8AM until 12:30 PM one week in June so they can personally organize and direct a program, they should keep their mouth shut?

Apparently so. Didn’t you get the memo that unless you are between the ages of 21-35, have children, and have one parent at home full time, you don’t matter to the Church? sarcasm Should we should all keep our mouths shut and fume, and then eventually leave the Church.

Hi doanli,

You sound kind of like me in what I concentrate on in photography … landscapes, landscapes, and more landscapes. :o Where’s your favorite place to capture artistically?

Still life is really cool and sounds like fun. Are you into the classic bottles on a table, or what do you prefer?

To try keeping this post on topic, I’ve thought about how to use photography for the Church. Briefly contemplated parish yearbook photos, but really am not a portrait photographer, that takes a special gift that I don’t have. However, I did at least discover in Washington DC that I’m capable of photojournalism, so when that type of opportunity presents itself, maybe something will come of it. And of course my first love, capturing God’s beauty in nature! 🙂

People complain because there’s a lot to complain about.
People complain because it’s a good outlet for their frustrations (better then wacking some one anyway) lol
People complain because they want to make things better.
People complain because they have free will and are debating their choices
People complain because that’s the way God made us. It goes back to the bible…in fact it’s all over the bible. The best example is the Jew complaining about wondering the desert for 40 years (or whatever it was) after being freed from the Egyptians. I think even Adam complained. It’s part of the human condition I guess.:rolleyes::D:confused:🤷

I’m pretty outspoken when it comes down to it. There is another parish, but it is not accessible to me. I ride the bus (don’t have a car), and it’s not near a bus line. I just wish my parish did it at least more than once a month. We can only adore Jesus from 9 am to 1 pm once a month apparently.

And yes, I would be willing to do more than a Adoration shift a week, as long as it doesn’t cost me my job, lol. 🙂 Got cats to feed!
You know, somebody once suggested I get a cat. While I’d love to have one, I replied that with all the traveling I do, I’d be dragging the poor kitty to the kennel all the time. This person then suggested that if I went away for a week, since cats are intelligent, I should just set up seven bowls of catfood and water, have plenty of litter handy, and the cat would know to ration everything until I got home!

… And I’m STILL glad you spoke up about Adoration!
:tiphat:
