I found this story to be extraordinarily interesting. Seems the people in this Russian province are being urged to do the very opposite as the people in China, where you are only allowed one child if you live in the more populated cities.

The gist of the story is this: In an effort to boost flagging birth rates, officials in the Russian province are urging married people to procreate.

Now, I’m all for procreation … but designating a specific day to do so seems a bit absurd. And to be honest, I’m not all too sure it is very moral either.

Would love to hear what others think.

Here is the link to the story:

What percentage of women will be in phase 2 on that day? And of course, there is no guarantee that the pregnancy will be exactly nine months.

As far as the morality, I think we would evaluate this like any other encouragement for having a child… since most people are aware that the specific timing is by chance. It would be different if they are trying to boost fertility rates up to 5 or 6 per mother; but as it is, perhaps they are countering the selfish tendencies that have left the rate unnaturally low.

I predict a shortage of birthing facilities and trained medical professionals.

That province better ramp up it’s health care for a sudden surge.

This sounds neat and sounds like it would be a good idea here, but my wife would be totally put off by it. “Everybody’s doing it” just doesn’t sound romantic.

Doesn’t Russia have a “Barry White” that they can play on the airwaves?

Soooo this province uses tax money to give people cars to have kids despite the fact its the high taxes in the first place that led to the population decline… talk about throwing fuel on the fire!

Nah. The cause is communism and abortion, legal in Russia since the 1930’s I believe. High taxation is one of the bitter fruits thereof. The cost in lives and money and justice is incalculable when man decides to play God.

“The tradition of awarding prizes for giving birth dates back to Soviet times, when women could be named “Hero Mothers” for having especially large families”

Every ethnic group tries to use population as a means of power; we hear whites in this country lamenting over the “browning” of the populace.

But things are just a little bit weird in Russia. When I was there ten years ago, just going into a store to purchase something was a strange ordeal.
