Sorry, I didn’t read all the replies.

But I would also make sure your daughter is not reading the mangas on the internet. There are sites that make them available. Unfortunately, you might not be able to do anything when she is in school.

Some manga is good, but yes, you should screen what she reads.

I’m not a parent, but I would read *every *manga my kid laid eyes on. Look through the manga comics, Google the series, Wiki it, and just plain be involved. A lot of it is just fine, but a lot of it is not.

Parents should be involved with their childrens’ choices of anime and manga just like movies, video games, TV shows, and so on.

The underlying problem, imho, isn’t manga itself, it’s that the OP’s daughter apparently thinks that reading about incest is alright. As she grows from girl to woman, the times that mom is by her side to watch out for her will decrease more and more. So it’s her faith and her conscience/moral compass that needs addressing, and the sooner the better.

A mind without purpose will wander in dark places… :knight2:

I think it depends on your daughter and how mature she is.
I’m 19 and love catholicism. But I still enjoy comic books, nintendo, books, manga, and anime.

However, I’m pretty picky about which manga and anime I like. Out of personal preference, I stay away from gore fest mangas [it’s just like I stay away from ‘torture porn’ movies such as saw] and hentai- which is just manga/anime porn. I think why anyone who reads, writes, watches tv/movies, whatever, do it so they can be entertained by a good story with interesting characters. Porn is just to get pleasure, it insults the soul. There are some very cool stories I’ve found through mangas and animes. The manga/anime Death Note sounds like it’d be an awful anti-christian story but I noticed a few christian references throughout. Light is corrupted by pride and hate that as he tries to become ‘God’ he loses his humanity and turns out to only be a weak man. L is a humble, meek character who only wants to stop evil. There’s a deleted scene from the anime where L washes Light’s feet. It’s a bible reference to further emphasize how L is humble and loving. Now I’m not saying that it’s a christian manga, it’s not. But there’s an influence that just shows how Jesus reaches all the nation.

In another anime which I think is very cute, sweet, and obnoxious is Kodocha. As I watched it all I could think was ‘this is different. this show is about love’ Sure enough I noticed a few character wearing cross necklaces.

Equally interesting is the anime Samurai Champloo [for an older audience] that is a historic anime about christianity coming into Japan. It’s not the plot, but it’s there and I find it interesting. Cowboy Bebop [another anime for mature audience] has one episode with the villian says there is no God but I felt like no one took it seriously since the person who said it was a bitter kid in a coma - don’t ask how that works! haha. Otherwise, no mention of God or lack thereof.

Some people have commented that Wolf’s Rain character Kiba is a Christ figure since ‘paradise’ can’t be opened without his blood.

On the flip side you have Neon which is a little anti christian from what I understand.

I personally think you’re daughter will be fine as long as you’re being a good role model and good catholic influence on her. After all, seeing you live as a christian is always going to have a huge effect on her than mangas. But I do ultimately think it’s an individual’s choice on how they live. All you can do is provide the best example possible so that they’ll see your way of living [Jesus’ way] is truly the best way to live! No mangas, unless that’s all she has to look to for guidance, I doubt will change that.

I don’t want to turn even THIS forum into a Death Note debate, but… I wouldn’t say L was.
L struck me as a selfish child, taking the Kira case because it was a challenge for a bored genius.

I’d say Near, one of L’s to heirs, was more righteous… Near seemed like he really wanted to stop Kira, for the good of the world… Whereas L seemed like he only wanted to do it because he could, because he wanted a challenge.

(Although, I can’t say I ever liked Near, I much preferred L and, later, Mello)

Buuut all debates aside, Death Note does indeed have some fantastic imagery.
I don’t recall that the foot bath scene was deleted… Then again, I only ever watched it on DVD, so perhaps it was taken out of the TV versions… Either way, if the TV version did take out the foot bath scene… Well, that’d just be sad. D:

Over the past four or five years of my daughters life she’s grown very interested in japanese manga and anime. Most of this started from watching pokemon, which I had no objections to, contrary to popular views on the matter. (Honestly, little critters posed no risk to any childs soul)

However, after getting back into this sort of stuff in her teenage years, she’s picked up more mature titles, and seeing T+ and M ratings on comic books can be rather unnerving for a parent.

So, I started reading some of the books she owns, and was shocked and appalled.
Not only are many of them sexual and violent, but the direct messages regarding faith are downright disturbing.
One of these manga series revolved around two siblings involved in an incestuous relationship, and, as the manga went on, brought in homoerotic elements, “corrupt” angels, and “good” demons, and ultimately deemed God a villain.

The series was called Angel Sanctuary, and was probably the worst thing I found in my daughters manga collection.

I really don’t know what to do about such filth 😦

I’ve talked to her already about it, but I really want to get the message out there… We really need to guard what our kids are reading, before we run into such things our selves.
Amen.

Though there are some excellent series out there (Hikaru no Go comes to mind; a psychological drama about how a board game develops character), you do have to be very, very careful, because there IS a lot of garbage.
