A month back, a lot of porn anime was posted on this bb.

Which step is that?

They start with disparaging remarks about Christianity and slowing lead people toward porn.

That’s pretty weird. One would think a person would just jump straight into porn, not need a cartoonish transition?

Innocent to immoral - google key word search: porn anime

That is what you’re allowing your children to advance toward.

:nunchuk: Sidebar argument halted.

Focus on the OPs concern.
As far as that manga is concerned definitely chose more age appropriate titles like Full Moon, Romeo x Juliet, etc.
Amen.

It would certainly help though if the OP stated the daughter’s age. There are just so many series out there and many of them have varying themes and each meant for a particular audience in mind.

For instance? Does she like shoujo? What’s her preference? Horror, mecha, fantasy, slice of life, or maybe a crazy mix of some/all? I mean the Comics and Animation section on Yahoo! Answers had more questions like that and it was always the best way to discern what was suitable. [edited - take note where you tend to cross the line]
So what are we all saying here? Corruption of souls through Robotech and Akira? 😛
Darn, can’t find a witty comment for that. Those two are hailed as classics but my expertise isn’t in mecha or sci-fi. I’m more into action shounen, fantasy, and slice-of-life (with a bit of shoujo thrown into the mix… regrettably since I am a dude >_<;; ).

Why aren’t you encouraging your children to spend time connecting with Jesus or the deeper areas of our Church?

There is a distinct section of these Japanese cartoons that specifically orient teenagers to pornography.

Why are willing to risk the innocence of your preteens and teenagers with a simple key word search. Children talk.

Cuz religion isn’t the only aspect that makes up human civilization? :ehh: Look everything has its time and place. I’m sure the OP knows the value of raising a child the good Catholic way but that shouldn’t mean we become like fundamentalists and limit them to only so-called “Christian”-labeled entertainment. (Which frankly, I deem a huge joke to the point that I would consider excellent works such as The Divine Comedy, LotR and Narnia to have broken free from them.) From my experience in a Protestant school, there’s a good reason to separate play time from prayer time.

Its to ensure one does not reduce the other to a complete laughing stock (as I had experienced from that school).

A key word search on Christianity (and religion in general) on YouTube and Google will eventually lead one to either A: Smart-talking Protestantism (Remember VenomFangX?) or B: Internet Atheism (TheAmazingAtheist, patcondell, and other obnoxious commentators to name a few.)

The point? Your argument with the search box tags is sadly irrelevant.

And what will a word search of anime and porn show them?
Don’t tell me you actually think what they’ll see is worse than what they’ll see after looking up religion on a highly secularized internet.

Seeing as I’ve actually seen both myself. I absolutely see no difference.

Nor do I see how all this is even relevant. How can something as trivial as search box tags determine the morality of… anything?

Have you checked the Search Tag Cloud here in on CAF? You’ll find the word ‘masturbation’ is the biggest. I guess if you’re so insistent on using search tags as a criteria for judgment, you shouldn’t even be here.

I’ll say it again, what you’re asserting is pointless.

You think I’m going to believe that preteens and teens will see graphic cartoon porn on secular websites discussing religion?

You’re too defensive. You react as if I’m attacking your sacred cow.

Hmm, let me think. Blasphemy or pornography? Either way, you’re still filling a kid’s head with garbage.
You’re too defensive. You react as if I’m attacking your sacred cow.
Defensive of what? Common sense? Then my answer is obviously yes. I’d call on you too if you tried to make the same implication with other nonsensical search tags such as

halloween satan
catholicism pagan
pope antichrist
pope palpatine

Need I say more? Honestly, knock it off. Logic like that makes the Church look like its full of idiots.

Oh, I see now. You’re an anime writer. Odd how you didn’t offer a warning to the porn side of your occupation.

Everything has a porn side.
You obviously don’t spend enough time on the internet.

Rule 34 of the Internet:
“If it exists, there is porn of it. No exceptions.”

Honestly, are you done being irrelevant?

Over the past four or five years of my daughters life she’s grown very interested in japanese manga and anime. Most of this started from watching pokemon, which I had no objections to, contrary to popular views on the matter. (Honestly, little critters posed no risk to any childs soul)

However, after getting back into this sort of stuff in her teenage years, she’s picked up more mature titles, and seeing T+ and M ratings on comic books can be rather unnerving for a parent.

So, I started reading some of the books she owns, and was shocked and appalled.
Not only are many of them sexual and violent, but the direct messages regarding faith are downright disturbing.
One of these manga series revolved around two siblings involved in an incestuous relationship, and, as the manga went on, brought in homoerotic elements, “corrupt” angels, and “good” demons, and ultimately deemed God a villain.

The series was called Angel Sanctuary, and was probably the worst thing I found in my daughters manga collection.

I really don’t know what to do about such filth 😦
First thing I wanna address is the god thing. The important thing to remember about anime/manga is the context f the culture it’s written in. See, in shinto beliefs, gods and demons are just spirits. Gods are not necessarily good, and demons are not necessarily bad. They simply are. Take for example a shinagami. They are the gods of death, yet they are not evil or good. They rule of death and sometimes the macabre, but are neither good or evil. Because buddhism also plays a role in the religious culture in the east, you will almost never see a character that is 100% good. Yin and yang and all that.

Also keep in mind that christianity has next to no influence in Japan. They don’t know or really care about God as he is, that means they are not like The Gold Compass where they are trying to send a message about God or Christ. Any similrities are usually unintentional.

Now, as a huge anime/manga fan who also got into it as a teen, my advice to the parent of a girl beginning to explore anime is to learn about it. See, we westerners usually make this mistake that because it’s all 'comics" or “animated” that it all must be for kids. This is NOT the case. Anime/manga is written for all ages, from small child to adult. It’s as varied and diverse in its target demographic as all films and books in the west.

That means that you and your daughter need a solid education about what is ok, and what is not. The book she had indeed sounds rather filthy. This happens a lot, and why these books are rated for adults. It’s no different from those smutty $2 romance novels at the checkout counters at some book stores. It’s meant for adults, and it’s meant to be mature. It’s just as bad as western stuff, and needs to go away. But you can’t dismiss the whole genre, just as you can’t band all live-action movies just because porn is live-action. You have to find proper ratings and genres.

Personally, for a teen girl, I’d reccomend shojo anime/manga for 13 and under. This means anime/manga geared for young girls. These animes focus on friendships, and fun fantasies for girls (like faeries, chibi creatures, really cutesy stuff like pokemon). However, as an adult you need to be aware of certain buzz words for anime/manga she should NOT be allowed to read. Hentai, yaoi, and yuri are all words that pertain to sexual based themes/homosexual themes. Also, if it’s rated M or higher, just tell her no. I can almost guarantee it’s bad. Heck, I’m 26 and some M mangas are soo violent they give me nightmares. These anime/manga genres are intended to be scary and horrific like an R rated horror film is here.

We should judge all things, including manga and anime, in the Light of Christ and not judge Christ in the light of any thing, even manga or anime.

These value judgments we must make daily and give up any and all things that either fail in this judgment or end up being preferred to Christ. This is the basis for ascetical practices, giving up even good things for better things. When charity suffers in defending something, one should know that thing is being prefered to Christ.

If those “little critters” of Pokemon led to the filth of “Angel Sanctuary”, then they do indeed pose a great risk to a child’s soul. It is this mistaken judgment that led to years of avoiding judging what was being read by the youngster that has now reached this point, and a new dedication to making the value judgments needed, in Christ, is called for.

I don’t see the logic in saying Pokemon leads to Angel Sanctuary any more than I see in the statement Catholicism leads to witch hunts.

Oh really now? This is what we call someone giving up on an intelligent discussion, and lowering themselves to cheep insults.

Oh, dear, everything has a porn side. Books, movies, games…
If you’re going to automatically associate anime with porn, then you may aswell associate everything with porn.

I swear, I came to this forum because of a Catholic friend, and the knowledge that many Catholics have more common sense then Protestants…

Although this thread is certainly proving me wrong… Why must you all just get into flaming wars with eachother? Watching a bunch of Christians bicker with eachother over who’s right, and such… There’s something clearly wrong with this picture.

@ OP, the major question is your daughters age. While I think you’re already realizing this now, a lot of manga is mature.
I’m going to be honest: Angel Sanctuary is written by one of my favorite mangaka…
But it’s certainly not a series for a young, impressionable, audience.
As Shondrea stated earlier in this thread, while it isn’t exactly “Catholic friendly” it’s not filth either. (And it’s not some direct attack of Christianity, seeing as it hails from a country that views the Christian religion no differently than we view mythology of other civilizations.)

Personally, OP’s description of the series actually blows things out of proportion, it’s not quite as terrible as they’ve made it sound.

@ Whitacre_Girl - Be careful when lumping things into the shojo demographic. While it is targeted at younger girls, what’s okay in Japan is very different than what’s okay for western readers of the same age.
Most of my favorite manga is shojo, but it’s almost never of the fluffy and pink variety.
For instance, in the 90’s CLAMP wrote a series called X. It takes place in 1999, the apocalypse is upon us, and it blends together both christian and shinto elements together for its lore. And, while it is dark and gritty… It is also a shojo series. And it’s quite the polar opposite, for the same group who wrote Card Captor Sakura.

On this note, Angel Sanctuary is a shojo aswell.

Well that’s pretty much what I’m on this thread for. TwT
Wait around though, I know a good deal more on these forums who are well-versed (if not more than I am) in the subject of comics (both and east and west). They will usually have a few things to say.

Well in defense of Catholics, you’ll still find a lot worse coming from the mouths of the YouTube Fundamentalists. That’s one primary reason why I quit my account on the site and came here.

And I was responding to someone who was clearly demonstrating a book burner’s attitude. A someone who, in case you were so over-reactionary to observe, was NOT the OP.

I don’t see anyone labeling the OP a book burner. Unless the usernames are boggled up on your monitor, the book-burning post was addressed to an rcjones. The username of the OP is ArmastusBridget

Technophobic? Japan is one of the leaders in electronics and computer engineering as well as a major exporter of automobiles. Fanservice? Please note that the Bible has its own small share. (Book of Songs anybody?) There are also various kinds of fan service. Trust me, they ain’t all pointless. Furthermore, a grand majority of the pointless ones are found in comedy which is supposed to be ‘plain silly’. Only unlike Chick Tracts, such moments don’t take themselves seriously.
Yes, they are a major leader in that area. I meant to say ‘technophilic’…:o
You see, the problem is not necessarily WHAT is being shown, but what it is teaching. Glorifying incest in this Angel Sanctuary versus glorifying true sexuality in the song of songs, for instance. And one book in the Bible has, ahem, ‘fanservice’ versus nearly EVERY manga starting from shounen or above. And that Bible’s ‘fanservice’ is SO mild compared to that in anime or manga.

Aaaaaand here we have yet another example of blatant over-generalization. There are hundreds of titles out there (all mixed in genres and even more sub-genres). Have you read them all? If not, I suggest you stop and tackle every title as an individual case.
Notice that is almost EXACTLY what I was suggesting to the OP to do. Btw, I can play the name calling game too: Aaaaaand here we have yet another example of a knee-jerk reaction. Once the name-calling has stopped, then real discussion can begin…

Yes I’m pretty sure I’ve seen plenty of atheists being told the same thing by their masters in YouTube with regards to the Bible.
Eh what? I’m not the OP’s mast-no, I refuse to play your silly game.
Am I the only who sees the whole concept of burning books that disagree with your worldview to be utterly retarded? It serves no higher purpose than to inflate your head while riling up other people.
It was a joke? If you calmed down a bit and lightened up, maybe you’d see that…Of course, its hard to do that when your idol is being attacked…
Indeed, what a fine way for different beliefs to discourse.
Le sigh.

Yes, they are a major leader in that area. I meant to say ‘technophilic’…
That’s not a good generalization either as far as anime is concerned. True they have science-fiction but they’re capable of fantasy works too. Ever heard of Hayao Miyazaki? The man is known plenty for being an environmentalist and you can see it clearly in his films.
And one book in the Bible has, ahem, ‘fanservice’ versus nearly EVERY manga starting from shounen or above. And that Bible’s ‘fanservice’ is SO mild compared to that in anime or manga.
Why have you read every single manga in existence? The fact that you make such ignorant statements such as ‘shounen or above’ shows that you don’t even know what you’re talking about.

And mild? Saying words as graphic as ‘penis’, ‘breasts’, and ‘intercourse’ is equivalent to a lot of fan service shots I’ve seen. If you think the Book of Songs was my only example then you’ve got another thing coming. What about the scene where David was peeping on Bathsheba? Not unlike a lot of peeping tom scenarios I’ve read.

That isn’t to say I disregard the context. However, I wouldn’t disregard the context of manga either, unlike some people here who deny their crime of over-generalization.
Notice that is almost EXACTLY what I was suggesting to the OP to do. Btw, I can play the name calling game too: Aaaaaand here we have yet another example of a knee-jerk reaction. Once the name-calling has stopped, then real discussion can begin…
Name-calling? I didn’t call you anything. I said your statement was over-generalizing. Read again. Also, proof read your posts (even after posting). Another confusing typo on your part has already proven to go a long way.
It was a joke? If you calmed down a bit and lightened up, maybe you’d see that…Of course, its hard to do that when your idol is being attacked…
Way to miss my point. Gee, just because I speak against book burning, people here start accusing me of worshiping anime as my idol. Who’s the silly goose again here?

Lighten up indeed. I’d bet you’d tell Socrates to lighten up as well whenever you make an offense against reason and sensibility. You’d think if you spoke of burning the Koran or a copy of Dawkin’s God Delusion, I wouldn’t declare it stupid either? Gimme a break.
