Hi there.

Has anyone looked at the new far cry 5 due to be released next month.

My son has been asking to get it but looking at the cover I feel that the game would be blasphemous.

I know that it’s not directly against Christianity but against religious extremists but I still would be concerned about allowing him to play it.

Have any of you catholic gamers out there any thoughts on this?

Thanks

Religion was in old games like Zelda, Lufia2, Final Fantasy, Faxanadu, and especially Castlevania… but for a really long time all especially Christian religious symbols in games were censored or changed in American localizations. It has only been recently that the religions are mentioned in a more negative context explicitly such as in Assassin’s Creed or Dante’s Inferno. Like a lot of popular media things are often gotten wrong. I think more important than any strictly religious tones a game might have is do the characters, art, and storylines have redeeming qualities that are universal. I don’t know anything about Far Cry but even Final Fantasy eventually took a slight dig at the Church and the execution of the Knights Templar. They are still redeeming games for the most part. It’s surprising that sometimes the more violent games like Metal Gear, Castlevania, Devil May Cry, or Resident Evil have more positive things to say about the fight against evil or the struggle of the human condition. Often times it’s like picking up a novel you won’t know everything unless you read it for yourself. I still think older games have more substance and deeper meaning than current ones but the new ones have better graphics. Wish I could help you more but I have been out of the loop for a while.

Edit:

Lol

Ok so I just googled the cover art you mentioned on Far Cry. Very much seems to be in poor taste and unauthentically attempting to be edgy. Not a fan already.

Yeah probably best answer. We have instincts for a reason.

One of the most devil worshiping games I saw (and played) was “Skyrim Dragonborn”. That one went past the limit of fiddling with demons in my opinion - but the game was terribly entertaining to play.

As for “First Person Shooters” I personally grew tiered of them, after a while it’s all the same. I don’t think those are excessively desensitizing - Hollywood movies and news reporting are much worst at desensitizing. I stopped playing games altogether for the most part, and only sometimes take up an old game for kicks.

I’ll add that actually, opposed to movies, some of the war footage on youtube made me remember the horrors of war, while many of the political videos attempt outright to make you forget about war and legitimize it.

It also depends on the age of your son. A FPS would be acceptable after 14 years of age (as I said he’ll probably grow tiered of it eventually), before that age I think it is too violent and a strategy game might be equally or more thrilling.

Since the days of D&D dragonborne paladins have been the closest thing to Catholic understanding of Knighthood in fantasy games. This is even in Final Fantasy IV and VIII when you face Bahamut.

It depends on whether you see the light or not.

For a long time in old rpgs Bahamut was like the standard fictional representation of a judeochristian worldview even if he is a dragon.

Being dragonborne is like baptism dude.

Based on what IGN says about Far Cry 5

Set in America for the first time, Far Cry 5 offers players total freedom to navigate a serene-looking yet deeply twisted world, as the new junior deputy of fictional Hope County, Montana who becomes embroiled in an attempted takeover of the county by the Project at Eden’s Gate, a doomsday cult. Players will find that their arrival accelerates a years-long silent coup by a fanatical doomsday cult, the Project at Eden’s Gate, igniting a violent takeover of the county.
Far Cry 5 will allow players to explore the entire open-world in-game version of Montana alone or in two player co-op. Under siege and cut off from the rest of the world, players will join forces with residents of Hope County and form the Resistance.

I would rather it’s for mature gamers who know what to do with this game.

Stick with Mario & Zelda then… as for me I wait until it’s complete edition.

Sorry i missed your reply.

Tbh I have only played the beginning of skyrim but I know where being Dragonborne comes from.

Every Cecil Harvey has a Kain Highwind. More important than the Dragon is what is in the heart of the Knight that serves to what end.

This theme was really popular in the 90s and was like the whole point of movies like Dragonheart with Sean Connery or like earlier in John Boormans Excalibur.

Our interpretation of it is new but this is some arthurian type stuff that has been around forever and part of our tradition in the church to a cultural and perhaps deeper extent.

It is not the higher power that matters as much as what we do with what is given to us with that knowledge or responsibility that defines us in the stories and in life.

Would it bea mortal sin to play this game or would it depend on the intention and disposition of the player.

No it’s just not good influence so if you’re looking for better way to keep kids busy with their minds… plenty of choices to pick for them.

Skyrim might not be appropriate for kids, but it’s not “devil worshipping.” Geez. It’s just a game.

I’m not going to demonstrate anything, I stand by what I said!

Edit: what you put between quotes I said figuratively, again there are dozens or maybe hundreds of references to demons (some biblical others not) by name and practice in the game (that’s for sure). Think whatever you want, I won’t be bothered to demonstrate anything, facts are as I said.

You could say that about anything once you study enough mythos and theology.

Azazel is Nightcrawler’s dad in X-men is Nightcrawler a bad Catholic?

Most mythical things or theological things in media and art come from an older place.

I might not be here if I didn’t play older games like that because I was interested in the history.

I am still not saying Skyrim is a good game though.

My last post on this thread. Nightcrawler doesn’t exist to start with and from what I’ve seen has next to no characteristics of being a good catholic asides being seen praying once…As for both their superpowers make for good special effects and I don’t appreciate them. Again, I do hope never to see a xmen movie again after Logan. Hopefully the end of the series for me…

Azazel is a real demon in the book of Enoch.

In the comics despite some filandering or charm Nightrawler is leaning towards chastity and is often the voice of reason to Wolverine. He nearly became a priest saved the world and gets kicked out of heaven and hell for being an all around nice guy and gets no credit for it. He is the only superhero I have ever seen pray the rosary.

I don’t like Skyrim because I don’t think the West makes good rpgs lately not because it has basis of creatures in demonology.

The “demons” in Skyrim don’t exist either. It’s just a video game. It’s fictional.

If it bothers you by all means don’t play it, but there’s no need to go completely over the top.

Hey, I have read some of your posts and they were full of sarcasm. Do not speak to me.

Yes I do act sarcastic at times but I’m being serious. I play video games morally. Also the bad guys aren’t Catholic. The good guys are Catholic. So it’s not slandering the faith.

As I made clear via PM I was not addressing you @jackfitz316. And I state it here so there is no room for misunderstanding for anyone else reading this thread. God bless.
