Concernd about communion hosts in dumpster

Why on Earth would anyone do that?? 😦

In addition to trying to retrieve the hosts, you should be motivated to offer extra prayers for your grandmother’s soul. She desecrated the body of our Lord by treating the Eucharist in that way. I hope that she was genuinely ignorant of the sin she was committing, so that her culpability will be less.
 
Honestly, it doesn’t matter how gross it is in there, or how short a priest’s leg is, or any other reason. This is our Savior. This is the man who took the sins of the world upon his shoulders. This is the man who was crucified for us. This is him, full body present, laying in the trash. You have knowledge of this. Call someone to help you. Call the Knights of Columbus, or call the women’s guild at your church, or beg the neighbor boy to help if you truly can’t do it. There is NO excuse for Jesus to still be sitting in the garbage collecting ketchup and food wrappers. NO EXCUSE!! Fix this!!

Agreed. As a Knight of Columbus, I would gladly dig in a dumpster for this. I doubt there is a Knight who wouldn’t!

If you go to kofc.org/un/en/officers/fac.html you can look up a council in your area and contact their Grand Knight. Tell him your priest is going to be digging through the dumpster and he’s 80 and needs help.

This. You have to find a way to get Him out. This is why the priest is insistent on doing it despite his age and his leg. I agree with the people who have urged you to go to the Knights of Columbus - they will definitely help! If you can’t find the K of C for some reason, find someone…anyone.
 
Retrieving the Blessed Sacrament from the dumpster is of the UTMOST importance. Forget disability, hygiene etc. All that is insignificant compared to the absolute necessity of retrieving Our Blessed Lord in the Eucharist.

It should also not be forgotten that the person who stored the Hosts inappropriately in the first place may be guilty of grave sacrilege provided that she fulfilled the 3 necessary conditions. It is hard to imagine a Catholic not being aware of how very grave a matter keeping the Blessed Host(s) in a shoebox is. The laity are NOT permitted to keep the Blessed Sacrament in their homes. I find it truly scandalous that anyone should do this. There is no excuse for this.

All I can say is may Almighty God have mercy on her soul. :mad:
 
Thank you for all the support here. I had no idea. That it was this serious, but I knew something had to be done. I have to say that this has given me a lot of anxiety. I put a sign on the dumpster that said “Please no dumping” and not three moments later I watched a teenager toss a McFlurry inside!
 
Shout me down if you need to cos I really don’t know about this…but is there another way to deal with this? The priest may not be thinking of climbing into the dumpster. Could the Eucharist be dissolved or something?

Well I can’t really blame the teenager. A dumpster is a public utility - a private citizen can’t just take it out of commission by putting a sign onto it.

If the dumpster belongs to the McDonald’s, they won’t be very happy about non-employees searching through their dumpster. It might even be illegal. Is the dumpster on the restaurant property? If so, you should probably discuss this with the manager and explain that a religious object was thrown into the dumpster by mistake. They will be more understanding if you consult them ahead of time.

Oh - sorry - the dumpster is in front of my house. We rented it so that we could clean out a bunch of old stuff this weekend.

I believe that if a Host is no longer fit for consumption, a priest will place it in water until it has dissolved. Once it no longer has the appearance of bread, it is no longer the body of the Lord. That’s why our Lord is no longer present in sacramental form in our bodies when the host has been digested.

Catholic churches also have special means for disposing of water in which a host has been dissolved. I forget the name [edit - it’s called a sacrarium], but it is a special pipe which leads directly into the ground underneath the church. The water would not be poured down a regular sink.

I find the tale difficult to believe, to be honest.

Father Phillip came by and asked me how I knew the hosts were consecrated. I said I woukd see her take them from mass. He seemed irritated but then said some prayers over the dumpster. He then said they were no longer our lord and to go on using the dumpster. Thank God! We really need it to sort through my grandma’s other stuff. Let’s hope there are no more shoeboxes! Thanks for all of your help here!

Erm…I have never heard of a prayer or other way to deconsecrate Hosts. Does anyone know if that is possible? :confused: Seems odd…if it were possible, there have definitely been a lot of instances in history where it would have been used and wasn’t, like in that story about the little Chinese girl someone posted. I don’t think that’s doable.

He was irritated because someone that saw her taking the Host should have stopped her.

This story seems to be getting more and more, shall we say, unbelievable.

I would agree here. There is no way to change the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Our Lord back into bread, just as there’s no way to undo a baptism or holy orders. To think otherwise seems to me like treating the Miracle of the Altar like magic that can be cancelled if one says the right words. I would still contact the KofC and get Our Lord out of the dumpster!
