One of the things I like about MAGNIFICAT magazine are the occasional nuggets of information to be found.

Thursday morning prayer included Psalm 142, with this annotation, “Psalms such as this one are not reserved for those who are persecuted by visible enemies. They are given to us to pray whenever life’s troubles threaten to overwhelm us. If we are not suffering tribulation ourselves, we can pray in the name of all those who are burdened with problems that seem insuperable.”😦

And I immediatly thought of those alcoholics and addicts who have not yet made it into recovery. And also those who have but still struggle with the demons of craving. So I prayed this Psalm with that intention in mind, and it seemed to be much more meaningful that way. 👍

Any other comments on Psalm 142?

I first received the Magnificat from a loving follower of Jesus while I was in prison. What a blessing!

I read it everyday on my journey home.

Psalm 142 says what I cannot. “I tell him my distress while my spirit faints within me. But you, O Lord, know my path.”

“Rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are stronger than I. Bring my soul out of this prison…”

Unfortunately, those who pursue me are within me. Please pray for me and for all those whose souls are in their own self-imposed prison!

May God Bless You!

Alas, most of the prison population has a history of alcohol and drugs, So, yes, I pray for them, and especially now with Psalm 142

I’ve always seen Psalm 142 and similar Psalms in this light.

I’m certainly not so self-assured of my favour in God’s eyes, nor of the coincidence of His will with my own, as to think He’s about to smite all my earthly enemies at my request. But I certainly see these Psalms as applying both to the many spiritual foes who surround us - and to ourselves, our own worse natures, which can often be our own worst enemies.
