Well, since the Pope has nearly unlimited power in this regard, there really isnāt much that isnāt simply tradition. The tiara, etc. were tradition for hundreds of years. for example.
Still, there are good, practical reasons for holding it on a Sunday - the faithful, for instance, who wish to come and see the Pope.

Interesting. The feast day of St Gregory the Great. I wonder whether this was any part of the reason to start on that date (and if so, whether it sheds light on what the Cardinals are focusing on). From New Advent:
*At the very outset of his pontificate Gregory published his āLiber pastoralis curaeā, or book on the office of a bishop, in which he lays down clearly the lines he considers it his duty to follow. The work, which regards the bishop pre-eminently as the physician of souls, is divided into four parts.
ā¢He points out in the first that only one skilled already as a physician of the soul is fitted to undertake the āsupreme ruleā of the episcopate.
ā¢In the second he describes how the bishopās life should be ordered from a spiritual point of view;
ā¢in the third, how he ought to teach and admonish those under him,
ā¢and in the fourth how, in spite of his good works, he ought to bear in mind his own weakness, since the better his work the greater the danger of falling through self-confidence. *

If they pick a Pope at the end of next week, he will be installed before Easter. Thereās no reason to wait.

The reason March 12th was picked, according to Lombari (press secretary?) of the Vatican, was a practical reason, he said. Because they still needed more time to get the Sistine Chapel and the Casa Santa Marta ready.
