interesting…the revelations of the cardina’s diary seems to violate the oath of secrecy he took. May God have mercy on his soul.

I thought this was supposed to be one of the most secretive of all things that take place within our Church…they all take a vow of silence at risk of excommunication, etc…why would one jepordize their soul to leak this information…just because their name is not publicly known, doesn’t mean that God doesn’t know what they have done…Shame on them. It was probably a supporter of one of the more liberal Cardinals…and they are upset that Pope Benedict XVI was elected.

I would suggest before we start talking about guilt or any such thing, anyone could have made this up. To lend any credence to it is absurd.

ROME, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Joseph Ratzinger was elected Pope in April after his closest rival in the conclave, a cardinal from Argentina, indicated he did not want the responsibility, according to a secret account published by a magazine on Friday.

Respected Italian magazine Limes said details of the closed-door voting inside the frescoed Sistine Chapel come from the diary of an unnamed cardinal.

The 115 cardinals who entered the conclave on April 18 took a vow of “absolute and perpetual secrecy” not to reveal details of the election and the Vatican did not comment on the report.

If true, the diary would show that Pope Benedict was elected with fewer votes than those attributed to his predecessor, John Paul II, and that Latin America was closer than previously thought to having its first pope.

one has to wonder if the story was fabricated. If it ever revealed who this cardinal was, assuming this story is real, he will be excommunicated.

A sad fate for a Prince of the Church, and for such little gain.

Agreed. With all of the anti-Catholicism in the world today and how the MSM like to make things up, this is very suspect. They know that if this were true, the Cardinal would not come forward.

I doubt this is authentic. Considering how nosy our culture is, I’m not surprised at all to see this “story”. The papal conclaves are pretty big events, and people really want to know all the details about it.

Fidei Defensor:
There is already a discussion thread on this matter in the Catholic News subforum,
here: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=76782

I personally don’t believe it, and my reasons are on said thread.
Actually, this thread was first. A conclave is steeped in liturgy and
the story is news so it could fit either.

CNN also has the story. It talks about Italians having a more political view of the Vatican and conclaves. That is an interesting observation. All of the speculation really does not matter, of course. A pope’s powers do not stem from his margin of victory.

AMEN!
This is so abstract. A Cardinal, on threat of excommunication, keeps a DIARY? Right.

And so what if B16 was elected with less votes than JPII. It’s an election. Only one vote wins it for you.

Perhaps the diary was kept by the same individual who provided a copy of President Bush’s National Guard orders?

Do you think CBS will run it on 60 minutes II?

Maybe the Cardinal, or someone else who should have knowledge of the conclave, made it all up. Then they would not be divulging anything because it was all a fabrication. Hence they would not be excommunicated, correct?

The only problem with that would be the Cardnial then would be lying which is no good either. I think it is fake, or the diary was stolen.

The question is: what is the official response from the Vatican? Does anyone know for sure?

If you look back at Newsweek and Time articles back in April on the papal election, you’ll see details and speculation on votes and alliances…it may be all very illicit, but Reuters is a bit late with this…

These reports are strange, in truth - and even moreso when compared with an evening news program that aired on September 22, TG2 television (an Italian TV station). That report (quoting an “anonymous cardina;”) stated that Cardinal Ratzinger received 47 votes in the first ballot, Cardinal Bergoglio receiving 10 votes. It states that the votes for Cardinal Ratzinger increased in each ballot - 65 in the second, 72 in the third, and, finally, 84 in the fourth.

The above information comes from the Catholic World News website - cwnews.com/news/viewstory.cfm?recnum=39784

While it is shameful and scandalous that any Cardinal would break his oath and reveal what happened in the Conclave, I think that the report from TG2 TV is probably more believable than that or Reuters…

The Pope is able to release anyone from the vow.

So even should a Cardinal have divulged some information we should not rashly judge that he violated a vow.

It’s also possible that the diary was stolen.
