Dear Catholic Answers community:
Warning: This post contains frank (but not crude) language regarding sex.
After a badly treated miscarriage years ago, my wife has been unable to conceive. In desperation she turned to IUI (intrauterine insemination). The procedure was carried out a few days ago and we are now waiting for results.
I know that the church considers the use of IUI to be sinful and why. (I asked the doctor if we could obtain my semen by having relations with a “Catholic condom”, but their regulations require that the men use masturbation). But I did not have it in me to deny my wife’s desire for a baby of her own flesh and blood.
My question is: what happens to my relationship with God? I know that I have committed a mortal sin and have refrained from Communion since making my decision to go along with the IUI. I could have told my wife the standard line of “maybe God did not intended you to have a child”, but seeing her frustration and desperation I could not deny her this. If nothing comes up of the procedure, I can honestly confess weakness and knowingly disobeying God and his church.
But, if my wife is pregnant, how can I confess regret when I am going to be so joyful for her sake and mine? How can I express that I detest my sin when my sin gave me a child?
I have been praying for my wife to be pregnant. Is this wrong? Am I compounding my sin by asking God for a conception?
I intend to meet with my parish priest, but I want to sort out my mind and soul before we meet. Every day I feel a bit more regret for going along with the IUI. But, I also grow more hopeful that my wife is pregnant. Can I honestly say the words of the act of contrition if I am partly happy for the consequences of my failings?
Thanks.
