I’m preparing to return to the Church after about five years. I never left for another church or anything, but I just haven’t been attending Mass or practicing the sacraments.

So here’s my question: I need to make a good, long confession. Should I just go during their regularly scheduled times or should I try to set up a meeting with a Priest and talk things through?

Thanks.

Great decision! I think this is the time to set an appointment with a priest whom you highly respect to discuss your situation and confess your sins. This would be a much more relaxed way to handle it and allow you time to make a good general confesion. I remember years ago, after a big “ah ha!” experience, I decided you go to confession. So, I set an appointment with my pastor. He anticipated a regular 10 minute confession…2 hours later I think I had worn him out…but I felt invigorated, ready to take on the world for Christ, I felt like I was released from a self-imposed prison! It was wonderful!

Your post gave me a great deal of excitement. If I can ever help you in any way, please do not hesistate to contact me.

Love & peace in Christ,
Bob

hey, welcome home…we have missed you… we will all be stronger for your return… i would suggest you call your priest… he may or maynot need a special time…

when i returned to confession after about a 20 year absence, my confession lasted about 5 minutes, but that was thanks to the priest… he made my re-afilliation and reconcilliation very easy…

yours will too…

If the confession lines at your parish are anything like mine (or the average parish) you should have more than enough time to confess at a scheduled time.

Thanks for all the kind words and adivce. I have a qucik follow-up question. Without giving away to much info, I haven’t broken any legal laws, but I’ve probably broken most of God’s laws. How informal do you think a Confession such as this would be?

Thanks.

Whatever you have to confess, unless he’s a newly ordained priest, they have heard it all. Don’t second guess that you are the worst sinner next to Satan. Don’t delay…or procrastinate…you will feel so much happier to be reconciled with the Lord. Don’t be surprised if you weep with happiness and wonder why you waited so long. Come on…God’s waiting to hear from you! You are his lost sheep that He is waiting to carry on his strong shoulders. Peace be with you always.

Tell the priest that you would like his help in making a good confession since it has been a long time, you have been through a great deal, and you desire to start afresh with a clean slate. Speak to the priest from your heart. Be honest, not holding anything back. Do not rush. This is your special moment with Christ and he wants to give you time.

In my life, I too broke most of God’s laws. I have told priests my deepest and darkest secrets. I have gone repeatedly back, sitting before the same priest, and reconfessed sins that I keep struggling with. Always, I have found love, compassion, and forgiveness. I have come away strengthened by grace to continue my journey.

St Ignatius once made a general confession after his conversion experience that lasted over a day!

Just go with a sincere heart to wipe the slate clean and get spiritual counsel!

When I returned to the Church and the sacraments after 10 years (similar circumstances–I never really left, but I was not practicing), I went to a Penance service during Holy Week. Afterwards they had long lines to go see the multitudes of priests there for the occasion.

There had been a sheet with an examination of conscience and Iread through that during the service…and just bawled my eyes out. When I finally got to the poor priest who was going to hear my confession he actually looked alarmed at my condition! :o

I showed him the sheet with the lists of mortal and venial sins and told him that I was a terrible person, etc., I’d broken almost every command, etc. That poor priest, to have to deal with me!

I had been so terrified and he did his best to put me at ease…as much as possible. So I did make a general confessionm about 5 minutes and of course he admonished me to not wait so long again and welcomed me back to the Church.

I left feeling only somewhat embarassed, but mostly relieved and so clean!

I hope you don’t have the same emotional response I did, but at the same time, those tears can be very cleansing.

The only problem you have to watch out for is this: I didn’t end all the stuff I had been doing, but long story, I finally started a new life. So it was another 2-3 years before my next confession. And several confessions after that I kept remembering what I thought were unconfessed mortal sins. Finally a very wise priest gave me peace and told me that in the confessions I had gone to, I had been absolved of ALL my sins.

In other words, accept the grace you are given. If you go through this confession and dont’ deliberately withold anything, you do not need to confess it in the future unless there is something that really bothers you or something.

I would recommend making an appointment…I really wish I’d had the courage to do so (I almost did after the Passion of the Christ) because I would have had a much easier time of it.

Welcome home!

Clarification… once you are out of the confessional, if you remember a mortal sin that you forgot to confess you are obligated to mention it at your next confession. Although it was forgiven, assuming you didn’t deliberately withhold it, you must still mention it. This only applies to mortal sins, of course. You should guard against scrupulosity.

Hi Jabronie -

It is wonderful that you have decided to return!. I have had a similar experience in my life. It is one of the best things I ever did.

Now the confession advice. Just last week I knocked on a Rectory door and asked for to make a confession. The priest welcomed me in and I recieved the sacrament in his office. It didn’t take long, maybe 15 minutes.

Of course being let in for something like that is up to the priest. He may have more urgent events going on, like a sick or dying person, or a wedding to attend.

Then there are the appointed times. Just walk right in!

I’d say call ahead of time if you feel the need for more security, instead of an impromptue visit.

Anyway you do it, you will receive God’s grace.

Also, here’s an excellent website with a very thorough examination of conscience…

Catholic Parents Online (don’t let the website’s name fool you)

I went yesterday…the first time in over 15 years…

The first time I came back after a long absence the priest gave an exasperated sigh when I said 8 years since my last confession…then he wouldn’t let me go because he was so facinated by my story of searching for God in another religion and trying to be too good! (My sister and her friend had just left him with their stories of being bad girls!) When I finally got out, people were lined up not looking too happy at the hold up…so I’d suggest a private confession if you have some issues to discuss.

Welcome back to you too!

When I came into the Church 4 years ago, my first confession was by appointment (couldn’t wait for the regular RCIA time!!) was a half hour long, and of course I bawled my eyes out. Afterward I was sobbing in the chapel in His presence, and the rain started pouring, felt like my sins were being washed away. When I finally began to regain my composure, I looked up, and the sun was shining through the stained glass window, right on the tabernacle. It was like He was echoing the priest (or the priest was echoing Him!) Welcome Home. God IS good!

Since then my confessions have often repeated some of what I confessed the first time, and I’ve sinced discerned the sin in other actions and habits that I previously didn’t see. But frequent confession chips away at them. What a gift!
