Hi, DavidFilmer. You “don’t appreciate” my extrapolation from your previous post, and I don’t appreciate your tone and your tendentious characterization of my previous post, so I guess we’re even. Your own personal views are neither here nor there to me, and I was alluding to my own view of the documents cited in your previous message, not to your own views about the purity of your own personal contrition (which is none of my concern one way or the other).

There is plenty that I would dispute in your catechism, but as I started out by saying in my first message, that is not the purpose of my inquiry.

Hi, Michael Allen. I appreciate your balanced thoughts and charitable attitude. Thanks.

This is a talk given by Dr. Scott Hahn, a former Presbyterian minister, and this is the best lecture/talk I have ever heard about Confession. I sometimes play this in the background on my computer and must have listened to it about 5 or 6 times.

I also have this on CD (got it from my parish for $3!) and have listened to it on the road. It’s fascinating… I have been a Catholic my entire life, and I did not have as good an understanding about Confession as I do now.

Dr. Hahn gives us the Biblical explaination of Confession (both Old Testament AND Jesus’s institution of the Sacrament!), what is required for a valid Confession, and he also talks about the overlooked aspect of Penance in the Sacrament. The Confession is invalid unless you do your Penance.

This “video” is worth the 75 minutes (or so) you would invest in it. My fiancee’ had a big issue with this when she was preparing to come into full communion with the Church. She found this CD more impressive than I did…
