I’m new here, and I’m sorry if this is the wrong forum, or if anything wrong with this.

But, I have a question about confessions and sins, and I’m worried if I’m doing anything wrong. The question may seem odd so I don’t mind if you think that.

-When I go to confessions, I’m afraid to tell the priest a few sins that I commited, because they are really wrong. I need some help or advice, I’m really afraid to tell the priest to tell some of my sins.

You may find it weird, but then it’s worrying me alot, I still have a few sins I haven’t confessed. I need some advice.

What are you afraid of? Even if whatever it is that you are afraid to confess is the worst sin they have ever heard (it is not), they cannot tell anyone. The devil has planted, and is cultivating that fear. It is not rational.

You do not have to go face to face, if you cannot look someone in the eye and tell them what you have done. Go to a confessional with a screen.

Confession can be very difficult. I am sympathetic. I have gone way out of my way to go to confession with a priest that I am sure will not recognize me, rather than go to my very good, very understanding, very holy and very accessible pastor. It kind of seemed like cheating, and maybe it is, but the sacrament was valid and my sins were forgiven.

The worst of your sins are the ones you most need to confess. They are the ones which are plaguing your heart. They are separating you from God.

Remember, confession is a gift. It is not punishment for the sins, it is a means of freedom from them. Your sin is holding you captive and God wants to set you free.

I would think the Priest has heard lots worse that what ever you may have to confess…you should not be afraid.

You are right though to be concerned about hiding mortal sins (if they were mortal…you say they are really bad…)…the Holy Spirit is perhaps urging you to come clean…and get to confession…

If they are mortal sins …they need to be confessed. We are obliged to confess all mortal sins in number and kind (adultery 3x, murder 2x…though sometimes we do not know and have to approximate…around 5 x…even at times “many x”) (and circumstance that changes the sin…like it was your brother you murdered)

Unfortunately … if we hide …if we withhold …even one mortal sin…the absolution will be invalid…and such is then another sin…and we need to then confess that sin (which is also grave matter for mortal sin) along with the mortal sins you hid …and all the other mortal sins that we confessed in that confession …or usually since…

So hiding a mortal sin… just adds to the trouble …for either we confess all the mortal sins we are conscious of or in reality …we confess none…(I am not talking about forgetting them…that is different…in such a case one is though obliged to confess them in the next confession after you remember them) (note to those readers who are scrupulous…listen to your confessor and do not scruple with “what if” etc…)

Now I can not say for sure that such was the case with you…I imagine it can be the case that someone tries to make an honest confession and hides something without knowing that one cannot do that…etc…But really…you need to go see a Priest in confession and tell him what happened (and I would confess the other mortal sins as I noted above).

That is if they were mortal sins …you need to examine your conscience for them…and for the others (mortal sins) that you already confessed in those bad confessions (as noted above) and those since the bad confessions…and you need go and make a good confession (make an appointment with a Priest perhaps)…(one would of course wait for communion until then)

The Priest can help you if you ask him…I am sure this happens to others…the Priest can help you get things right here…just tell him what happened…and bring all your mortal sins…confess them…be sorry and amended for them…and then rejoice!

There really is no need to be afraid…the Priest has heard many many things…

Be not afraid 🙂

Jesus is the Good Shepherd …he loves you…and he wants to forgive you and give you his life. If you have committed mortal sins…you need to confess them all…then you will know again* true life*.

ask the Holy Spirit to assist you in making a good confession. Fear of what? If you are withholding mortal sins you are making bad confessions and have not been absolved. Be afraid, be very afraid, of withholding sins, don’t be afraid of having them forgiven. There is nothing–nothing–you can tell the priest he has not heard before. You are confessing to Christ, you know, are you afraid of Him?

Whatever it is, confess. I just had my first confession and reconcilliation and I am becoming Catholic this May 1st (to put this in perspective I had to think about 40+ years of life and what needed to be confessed). I had one sin in particular that I sweated over, cried over and was just plain petrified to express to my very kind, gentle and understanding priest. I was doing a face to face confession and while I could express some things to him, this I could not even look him in the eye when I said it and felt terrible even after receiving absolution. I went immediately to do my penance and in my penance I received grace allowing me to truly let go of the guilt and shame I felt about the sin and I was able to accept the absolution I had just been given. Go and confess, if you need to look down or away, so be it, you aren’t required to look the priest in the eye, but you do need to confess and the reconcilliation you receive when you repent is SO WORTH IT. My prayers are with you.

How do I put this? Well I will just say it. I very sick with double phnemonia. They had a priest come. I was out of it n I had confession. Well something kept bugging me. I was not sure if I had said everything aloud. Well finially after a while when I went to confession I decided to ask/tell the priest what had happened. Well needles to say I had to make the confession on the sins I was not sure. Of course was scared. Let me tell you what happened after. Well went to do my pennace n I guess you could say it was a grace but here is what happened.
I felt like feelings of betral n remoss all at the same time. Betrale because I had not I guess, did not ask about it soon after. I also felt great remoss n forgiveness. As to compare with Judas as he had betraid Christ. I also like I said remoss, but like Peter who was our first pope. Came away after many tears, being grateful for his forgiveness, an much needed peace of mind. Even now that I am writting this to you, I am feeling your pain, but I also know embarrising, or being plain afraid will not work. It will keep at you till you set things straight. I will say a pray for you so the HolySpirit will help you.:hug1:

You’re not confessing to the priest, not really, you are confessing to God THROUGH the priest.

God, remember, already knows all your deepest darkest secrets, every single one of those sins, and is just waiting in that confessional to give you His forgiveness for them. But He has to hear you name those sins, each and every one, first. Only then can He heal you and extend His mercy to.

Thanks guys, this means alot, going through the time to tell me all this, it’s amazing, thanks. I’ll go to confession as soon as I have the time. 🙂

If you intentionally hold back a sin in Confession, you commit a sacrilege – a grave sin – and none of your sins are absolved. You must go back to Confession and confess that you made a (or many) bad Confession(s) and make an account of all of your sins since your last good Confession. If you received Holy Communion in that time, while in a state of mortal sin, you also need to confess that because it is a grave sin of sacrilege.

A single mortal sin will put you in Hell forever. And anyway, you can’t feel too embarrassed to tell even your worst sins – after a priest has been a parish priest for a couple years, he has already heard the most wicked sins, even from people who are outwardly good and pious people, it’s hard to shock a priest. Secondly, he’ll find out sooner or later anyway because all of your sins will be made known in all their details to everyone at the Last Judgment.

So just go to Confession and confess your sins and perhaps that fear, in addition to the graces you will receive with a valid Confession, will help you avoid those sins in the future.

I used to really struggle with saying certain sins out loud. It’s so tempting to try to bury them among other smaller sins (e.g., “I broke a friend’s pencil on purpose, I didn’t pray before dinner last night, I killed three men with a stolen handgun, and I sometimes gossip at work.”) The advice I received, and which I would now impart to you, is to confess those hard sins first. The rest of the confession then becomes much easier, and the priest will be able to assist you much more easily once he knows which sins are weighing heaviest on your heart. God bless.

I dislike the title of this thread and a number of other people’s posts.

Too often people call the sacrament “Confession”, focusing on going into a small room alone with a priest and discussing all of the bad things you’ve done. That sounds like a terribly awkward situation and is legitimately scary!

As I understand it, the sacrament is called “Reconciliation”. The focus is not on what bad things we’ve done, the focus is on being forgiven of those things and fully accepting God;s love and acceptance despite our failings! Go, tell your sins, and don’t be afraid. As others have said, the priest has very likely heard worse (unless he is new to the stole), so there is no need to be worried about that. I have never heard of a priest denying absolution, so you don’t need to fear rejection either. God, through the priest, will forgive you, no matter how terrible your transgressions, because you’ve admitted you’ve done wrong and want to improve! All of Heaven will celebrate as its sister/brother returns to the fold fully in the love of the Father!
