I read an article on Lifesite News,Cardinal Dolan was quotes as saying he had doubts about his invitation to Obama being a good idea.
Hey, but Obama made sure to point out how much good the Catholic Church does!

*Hi Jason,

I was wondering if you could direct me as to were I might find a copy of Cardinal Dolan’s talk. I tried you tube and then google but came up with nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.*
I haven’t seen it online as of yet. I watched it on C-SPAN last night, but only caught the last few minutes.

I have respect for Cardinal Dolan, but there is something not right for me to see Obama and others laughing when he is infringing the first freedom, religious freedom, and so many Catholics and non Catholics are being put in a terrible predicament. Obama also supports homosexual marriage and abortion, intrinsic evils. If the Al Smith dinner had serious speeches maybe I would have not have such a problem, or if the Al smith dinner was behind closed doors and not filmed or photographed, but to have such a public display of joking as if everything is fine is not right to me. I wonder what God thinks of this?
Again, Jesus did not come for the righteous, he came for the sinners. One of the greatest forms of evagelizing is through our actions. Do we love others even when we have trouble doing so? Do we embrace others as children of God even when we strongly disagree with them? Do we look within ourselves as we look at others?

Jesus ate with and went to sinners. Should one of His Cardinals do any less?

Catholics know the faith…many choose to ignore it.

Many do, but many more are extremely ignorant when it comes the faith. The vast majority in fact. Start with non-negotiables like belief in the Real Presence.

When you have a vast minority who actually do (again, this isn’t something to discuss, and no Catholic gets a say…) believe in the Real Presence, you are in trouble as a religion.

Many Catholics know facts, but what they lack is the knowledge that they must be obedient and form their consciences to Church teachings. The Church does not care for their opinion or what they think of her teachings. Arrogance and pride taught from people raises in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, have made Catholics believe that what they think about what the church says is somehow important or relevant.

It’s not.

Romney gave a great speech, full of humor and facts. He is very likable, very presidential. Regardless controversial, Romney did great again!!

I watched Romney, Obama, and Cardinal Dolan all speak and all three did a great job. Funny, personable, and definitively human. I think far to many people get caught up in politics and become a bit jaded towards people like Romney and Obama, truly they are just people and at best spokemen for their surrogates and supporters. Anyone who has read my posts on CAF knows that I am firmly against Obama but last night I got to see the man I like and put politics aside so I could just enjoy what he had to say.

The same goes with Romney, I’m not a supporter of his (although I hope he’s elected president) but its nice to see him show his true colors and just have a good time. Shake off that image of being a stiff, I truly believe that neither Obama and Romney take most of this politiking as seriously as their surrogates and supporters do.

And anyone who says that the Church and its clergy shouldn’t be involved with those that have disagreements, you should be rebuked. Our hope and change will not occur unless we begin meeting people where they are, just like Jesus did. Cardinal Dolan knows this and I praise him for his efforts last night.

As long as Cardinal Dolan reminded the President “I’ll see you in court…” I agree.

Remember, these two are litigants against one another in an unprecedented USSC case.

It’s one thing to break bread and share a few laughs, so long as everyone in attendance remembers one of the men laughing is legally trying to force you to pay for contraceptive services. I wonder when the Church would no longer invite a candidate. At what point would they draw the line? Forced abortions? Attempts to mandate homosexual marriage by the Church?

It is hard to argue against any of them when they are arguing the Church must disavow teaching and pay for contraceptive services, regardless of how the language of the bill tries to spin it.

Just seems odd to see people suing one another laughing as though they are best buds.

It’s easy to be friendly with people who agree with us, the real test of our commitment to God is how we treat those whose opinions differ.

I like Romney’s joke about the breaking headlines following the dinner:

“Headline: Obama embraced by Catholics, Romney dines with rich people”

😃

This is true, but beat in mind these are not differing opinions. This is an attempt by one person to force another to either violate the tenets of their faith, or ultimately go to jail. Dolan is essentially suing Obama.

I am unsure what I’d recommend, but it certainly something you don’t see very often.

Makes you wonder why anyone ever gets flack for attending these sort of events if all you want to do is show them Christ?

Why was their uproar over Bush visiting Bob Jones University?

But Romney isn’t entirely pro-life and has many positions in conflict with our church which isn’t surprising considering he is Mormon. It would be one thing if the other candidate was consistently and entirely pro-life. We are dealing with shades of gray. Only that Obama is like tar black and Romney like a light gray. So Dolan had to invite both.

You mean God- the Romney supporter?

“Romney for President!”
-I am GOD and I approve this message.

🙂

Romney Zings Obama on the Mandate
Romney got in a couple of good lines about the President’s fraught relationship with the Catholic Church at last night’s Al Smith Dinner:
The President has put his own stamp on relations with the Church. There have been some awkward moments. Like when the President pulled Pope Benedict aside to share some advice on how to deal with his critics. He said, “Look, Holy Father, whatever the problem is just blame it on Pople John Paul II” [Laughter]
Of course the President has found a way to take the sting out of the Obamacare mandates for the Church: From now on they’re going to be in Latin.”
The implication, of course, being that the previous accommodation was just as hollow as the one of his punchline.
After dinner, the mayor of New York casually observed that the room was probably 60/40 leaning Romney
. That’s something for a high-priced Manhattan dinner at the Waldorf. But it was unmistakable, in particular, when Governor Romney said this:

At the Al Smith Foundation and the Archdiocese of New York, you show this in the work you do, in causes that run deeper than allegiance to party or to any contest at the moment. No matter which way the political winds are blowing, what work goes on, day in day out by this organization and you. You answer with calm and willing hearts and service to the poor and care for the sick, in defense [of] the rights of conscience and in solidarity with the innocent child waiting to be born. You strive to bring God’s love and every — in every life.

“In defense [of] the rights of conscience and in solidarity with the innocent child waiting to be born“ – this got applause. And that may have said it all about the audience and about uniting principles among Catholics.

Cardinal Dolan, for his part, echoed that, talking about our responsibilities to those who would be forgotten. And not letting the night go by without reminding us of our duty to protect the religious freedom of all Americans.

Sadly, Lifesite News so often skews things that it is difficult to take them seriously, pro-life purist though I am.
