i am very sad. i ask for grace all the time but i still feel stuck in the same problem. two priests told me i should wait and see how things develop between me and my (non-believer) boyfriend, another said i have to decide now whether to marry him or not, that i cant “sort of” be in a relationship. meanwhile i feel like i need his help - driving to appointments and emotional support since i am thousands of miles from family and dont really know anyone out here. yet seeing him, i want to be affectionate with him and i have feelings for him which i am not sure are sinful. sometimes my thoughts definitely get sinful but mostly it is feelings of desire which im not sure about. what does God want me to do? move away and never see him? what am i supposed to do?

Instead of listening to your emotions, you need to follow a very basic principal which is not to marry someone that doesn’t share your faith. You shouldn’t be following your “feelings” which can change. Marriage has enough challenges in it of yourself that you do not need to add the extra issue of differences in religion and beliefs. Being away from family is going to be difficult so leaning on this guy is not wise. The priest that told you to wait is being unwise. You need to also find better support emotionally than an unbelieving boyfriend. It is very normal to want affection and love but you shouldn’t be letting that cloud your judgement on marrying an unbeliever which is fraught with problems. It is easier now to move on while not married than to end up in a marriage then have to brake up due to constant conflict. you need to read the posts on CAF from people married to those that don’t share in faith and the real problems they now have.

well, i am pretty sure i dont want to marry him. i am more wondering what my relationship should be at all since i am out here pregnant. i am probably going to move back to my family until the baby is born (the hospitals are better) but in the mean time, do i not spend time with him? how are we supposed to connect when it comes to the baby?,

Yea that is a problem. I would contact a Catholic social service type organization for support for yourself and your baby. Does your family know you are pregnant? There are a number of good supportive crisis pregnancy agencies that can help you sort all this out and can hook you up with better help than this guy.

Kitty,
I will keep you in my prayers that you get the proper support for you and your baby and that you are all safe and I hope that you realize you God loves the both of you and He has a special plan for the you and your baby.

Since you plan on going back to your family at least until the baby is born, then that will give you time to think about all of this without being in the middle of it. Part of you may cling to him since he’s been so close to you. But since you don’t want to marry him, why stay with him? If he’s your baby’s father, visitation can be worked out. Along with child support. It’s possible to move forward from here. Know that our prayers are with you every step of the way. 👍

Kitty,
I will pray for you. I know you have a difficult road. As I can tell you many times over from my own experience, when we sin, there are consequences. This can be especially true with sexual sin. When you have engaged in the marital act with someone who is not your spouse, it is difficult to break that attachment. But, with God’s help, all things are possible, trust me!

If you feel strongly enough to post here that you don’t think you want to marry him, that is a sign. I think you know in your heart he isn’t good for you or your child. When we first try to break out of a cycle of sin, we need time to grow in faith and love to Our Lord. If being around him is a near occasion to sin, then you should probably avoid him. It doesn’t sound like he is good for you anyway.

Rely on prayer for your emotional support and not him. It sounds to me that you already know that moving back home with your family is the right thing for you to do at this point in your life. That could serve as a time for you to heal spiritually, get over him, and prepare for the birth of your child. It seems like the sooner you can get there the better.

Rededicate your life to Our Lord. Go to Confession and Mass frequently. Pray daily. **God loves you so very much. **He will show you the way, and He will richly bless you and your child if you open your heart to living for Him. When the child is born, God will show you what the appropriate roll is for the father in your child’s life. Pray for him.

If this is his child, you have a relationship. He is the father of your child. If that is not a relationship, then I don’t know what. If you can maintain a chaste relationship, then you may accept his support of you and your child. If you cannot, then the two of you need to work out if and how he is going to have a relationship with this child as his son or daughter grows up.

In any case, you know how to expect it to work out to let passions have expression when those passions will never have a chance for a chaste consummation. That needs to be your goal: to conduct yourself, including your thoughts, in the way least likely to tempt you to unchastity or to hurt this fellow by leading him on as if he has some future with you that you have no intention of sharing with him. The first is impure; the second, dishonest.

*Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take Christ’s members and make them the members of a prostitute? Of course not! Do you not know that anyone who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For “the two,” it says, “will become one flesh." But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.

Avoid immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the immoral person sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple* of the holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body*. 1 Cor. 6:15-20

You can manage your own thoughts, although it takes effort and practice. If your thoughts go in a direction that will leave you open to unchaste behaviors, a good strategy is to express the desire to show how you love God by your resolution to never offend God, ask God that you be preserved from the test, and then substitute a better thought.

IOW, both pray to God and row away from the rocks. This works better than the brute-strength-of-will strategy of trying to “not think” a thought. You are well-advised to rehearse what substitute thoughts you are going to call upon, when the time comes.

Well, anyone we date, we need to consider as a potential marriage partner. If the person isn’t what we would want to consider marrying, we might want to reconsidering dating.

Assuming you one day get serious and get married, in the best of circumstances, you would probably go to Church on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. He’d probably stay at home.

If you have children, again, in the best of circumstances, you’d go to Church on Sundays and Holy Days, take the children with you while he stayed at home or went elsewhere.

If you marry, if you marry in the Church, he’d be expected to promise to allow you to raise the children Catholic. However, actions and example are everything. Even if he allows you to have them baptized (some atheists would not give permission, and without permission from both, you would not be able to have your child baptized), your child(ren) will see that Dad always gets to either stay home, sleep late and do “fun” things while they have to go to church.

What will you tell your children when they ask, “Why doesn’t Dad go to church?” What if they say, “I want to stay home with Dad. I don’t want to go to church”?

Is your husband going to back you up? Even if he does, his example speaks louder than his words.

Will your boyfriend respect your wishes to stay celibate till marriage? Later on, will he respect your wish to use Natural Family Planning instead of contraception?

Will he allow you later on to put up religious articles in the house?

Will he ever pray with you?

I am divorced, had married an agnostic. I never could pray with him when things got tough. On Thanksgiving, he hated the idea of the word “God” so much that he’d leave the room if someone so much as tried to say grace. Many disagreements we had were over religion.

When we said the Pledge of Allegiance, he’d also leave the room, because it’d say, “…under God”.

I suspect issues will come to a head moreso when you have children together, though, over raising children in the faith.

Is he baptized?

Does he even believe in marriage?

The Church strongly encourages us to marry others of the same faith, and this is with good reason.

I can’t tell you the number of times people on the forum have regretted marrying a non-Catholic and all the fights which have come as a result of that. The Protestants refer to the concept of one believer marrying a non-believer as being “unevenly yoked”. Well, in other words, spiritually, you’d be trying to do all the work.

This may not bother you right at this moment, but I think eventually that it would.

Why not consider dating someone of your faith?

As to what we are to do, we are to obey God, the commandments and the Church.

Would you consider seeing a Catholic Counselor like through Catholic Social Services?

Someone, possibly John Paul II, said we should get married because we love the other person, want to spend the rest of our lives with him/her. He said that pregnancy, alone, wasn’t an adequate enough reason for marriage.

My dear, I think you got yourself in a difficult spot. God designed sex to be between 2 people who have come before God, family, and friends and declared their intention to marry. This is to ensure that any children that come about from sex would have 2 parents committed to each other.

My advice would be to consider that a non-believer is not a good fit to a believing Catholic for a life long marriage. You are not bound by marriage to this man, and I would not encourage you to hurry in this decision. It’s hard to think straight when you are pregnant and facing being alone if you break up now. Many young women have looked soberly at the man they are involved in and decided to move in with her parents and not have further contact with the father. They have decided instead to give their child 2 caring and loving grandparents and aunts and uncles (siblings) that will have families of their own. It leaves them free to move on in life and remain open to a more suitable life partner. That is not a bad option. Please consider it. Being pressured into a marriage because of a pregnancy often doesn’t turn out well, and you’ve got a lot of years in front of you.

my earlier post was meant to say that i plan to stay out here until baby is born (better hospital) then move back to my family. i know i have gotten into a bad situation. i was trying to stop seeing him before i got pregnant. i try to tell him it wont work out between us but it upsets him. i feel so bad for hurting his feelings. he doesnt want me and the baby to move away. its terrible.

Would you consider adoption as one of your options?
i have been thinking about it, even talked to an adoption counselor but i dont really want to do this. my mother is willing to support me and baby. i love my baby i dont want to give him/her to someone else.

Don’t beat yourself up about your situation. Take the situation you have today, and let the Lord help you from where you stand now. Many great saints have done worse. Regret looks back, but repentance and amendment go forward.

Look at it this way: Until you let go, he will not let go. If he does not let go of you, he will not find the woman he can marry and be happy with, and he will have to go through more hurt than if you’d refused to give him false hope.

If you are not going to marry him, you need to encourage him to stop looking at you in an unrealistic way. Encourage him to find the woman he really is going to marry. Remember where his eventual happiness must be, and try to get him to go in that direction sooner rather than later. Otherwise, you are only going to numb him for awhile, knowing he will have to eventually awake to an even worse situation than he will have to face now.

As for having a relationship with your child, that is something the two of you will have to work out. Your child will want to know him, will want to know he cares. If you are not going to give them adoptive parents and your child’s father is not a danger, try to make that relationship possible. Get help with that, though. That is not a wheel to re-invent yourself.

placing a child for adoption doesn’t mean that you didn’t love the baby, it means that you loved the baby more than enough to think of the future of the child well above your own.
I think you have been given some not so great advice. The best advice is to contact a crisis pregnancy center, get a regular counselor to help you sort out all these issues. Having someone the sees you face to face which even may include the boyfriend is the better thing for you to do. The best think anyone can do for you now on CAF is praying for you and baby.

yeah i knew someone was going to say that. (about adoption) you know what i mean. i want my baby. not having stable married parents is a big deal BUT me and my family love the baby and will raise him\her Catholic… so he or she would be cared for with us. i have spoken to priests, social workers, CCS… i love my priests but CCS didnt offer much. The adoption counselor is very nice and I am still considering if adoption might be best choice for baby, but honestly I hope not 😦
