PARAPHRASE

– The Jerusalem and New Jerusalem Bibles, so much more elegantly rendered into English than is the ugly N.A.B. (especially in the N.A.B.'s N.T.), use paraphrase rather more frequently than needed or judicious, but the J.B. and N.J.B. do tend to employ the technic with more sophistication, skill, relevance, taste, and to beneficial results than the N.A.B. does with its clumsy locutions and crudity.

– The use of paraphrase in the J.B. and in the N.J.B. is so adroit and apposite that often it is difficult to discern either where real translation ends and paraphrase ensues or even which approach is being applied in many instances.

– The R.S.V. uses paraphrase rather infrequently, and succeeds in conveying the Bible’s text into English with considerable precision.

– The R.S.V.'s flaws derive from liberal, anti-Chalcedonian bias in crucial, doctrinally pregnant passages, and, even more, from making resort to minority readings in the MSS. in the original languages that favour false doctrine, at the expense of majority readings that concur with orthodox teaching.

Computer attacks notwithstanding, you have said much of value in your few words above. I especially like your remarks re the elegance of the NJB’s renderings in sharp contrast to the banality of the NAB’s.

And you have skillfully captured and rendered what has been gnawing at me re the RSV(-CE) for quite some time.

Your earlier post re the merits of the Clementine Vulgate and the labor of love by Bishop Challoner resonated quite well with me and many others.

You are a most welcome addition to this Forum!
