Confronting my husband and his girlfriend

Godfollower, I’m not of the opinion that anyone should be dating or anything before a marriage is officially over. But these two seem to think rules are made for others.

So if there is any chance that a meeting could cause girlfriend to reconsider her course of action, waiting till the marriage is over may be waiting too long.

And for the record, I did put it into my decree that he wasn’t supposed to have anyone non-related over to spend the night with the kids in his house. Of course the same went for me, but I had no problem with that. It was great fun to inconvenience him, though.

😃

My kids were of a similar age when daddy’s antics became apparent to them. I’m still angry that he dismantled their childhood as he did. They’re mad about it too. So they take it out on me. Because I’m the safe person.

I just don’t think refusing to meet with her at this point will help things. But it may instill some doubt in her. After all, if he could do such a thing to a delightful charming person like the OP, he could do it to the girlfriend! 😉

At the very least, if he still goes through with the divorce he’ll have to find a new girlfriend. What does she have to lose?
I know, I know; why do you have to be so freakin’ reasonable? 😛

I just have a certain level of discomfort with meeting the girlfriend during (or before) the divorce. Part of it is the appearance of acceptance of the affair; part of it is the possibility of “losing it” during the meeting; part of it is fear of how it might be used during the divorce by hubby’s lawyer; part of it is the general ickiness of a wife effectively being forced to consort with her husband’s mistress; part of it is a general je ne sais quoi.

For what that’s worth.

part of it is fear of how it might be used during the divorce by hubby’s lawyer;
Yeah, that one is a problem.

Once lawyers are involved everything changes.

I’d invite her to coffee at a local shop. Just the two of us. I’d have my hair and clothes and makeup flawless. I’d be gracious. Anyone that eager to have an audience with you deserves one!

😉

Give her her money’s worth, darlin!

Bring a long paper on the care and feeding of your husband. Type it out and think it out beforehand. She’ll want to know just how picky he is about you getting the lint off his socks. How he wants to sleep till noon on Saturday and you better keep the kids quiet.

And you’ll need to give the blow by blow of what she must never do to get him angry.

And how to tell if he’s cheating. Outline to her all the signs he used when he was sneaking around with her thinking he was so clever.

And let it be known that YOU will be the one to tell the children if they get engaged. That they aren’t ready for such a shock. Be definitive that YOUR primary interest in all of this is the psychological welfare of your children and that you seem to have to be watching out for that alone because their father is AWOL.

Seriously. She may be a very smart woman who wants to hear from you whether her judgment of your husband is on target. My ex MIL always said if you want to know what a man is really like, have lunch with his secretary and his ex wife.

So she could be sharp as a tack. And bold as brass.

Don’t worry about your children. They know who their mother is. She is trying to be nice to them. You prefer he dates someone who hates them? My kids have a ton of very expensive gifts from long-defunct ex-fiancees.

Saved me the money buying them.

😉

They still have the gifts. Fiancees have moved on.

The key to all of this is to be a little too cheerful and a little too eager to shuffle off the old jerk to the unsuspecting naif. Really… do you REALLY want him anymore? Right now you’re hurting. But even if he came back to you, you’d never trust that he was really working late again. Plus, you will want to meet with her just to make him scared what you’re going to say.

And if you are nice on the surface, when the kids hate her, they won’t be able to say you poisoned them against her. You will come out smelling like a rose.

It’s all how you play it. Right now you have no intention of meeting her. But if you did, you might find out that she’s a confused fool. Or a complete witch (in which case, that’s FANTASTIC! He’ll have fun with that one!) or a lost soul. Or something in between. And it might give you something you don’t have right now… peace and a little bit of understanding. Because this woman has fallen for your husband’s line and lies just like you did. You really have more in common than you think. You share the same taste in men. You may walk out laughing thinking “They deserve each other.”

And maybe she won’t like what she hears about him. And maybe meeting you and seeing your graciousness and seeing your tears over the death of your dream may awaken a conscience in her. That you are a real person, not the bugaboo or the “my wife doesn’t understand me” that he has based his affair on.

She may walk away from him. She may become confused over the difference between his descriptions of you and the reality. Do you really think he told her “My wife is great. That’s why I’m leaving her for you.”

Yes, she has a lot of nerve. Anyone who would cross God Himself by committing adultery has a screw loose. But you can take advantage of the situation and play it smart and come out ahead. You’ll eventually have to meet her. The smart thing to do is make it a time and place of YOUR choosing, with YOU ready and with makeup on and emotionally prepared and prayerfully gathered. Do it on YOUR terms where there isn’t an audience. Not when she shows up to pick up your kids with him and you’ve been cleaning out under the bathroom sink and she’s wearing a new linen dress and perfect hair and you’re in jeans and you have sweat pouring down your face.

Choose the battlefield and go show her you’re a force to be reckoned with. Smile till your face hurts. You don’t know it now, but someday she may come to identify with your pain more than you know. He’ll do it to her too.

Your kids know you don’t approve. Meeting with her won’t make them think you approve. She may be the one feeding them breakfast someday. She may be the one calling you about their illnesses. You may need to have a cordial working relationship with her someday. If you don’t meet her, you validate every nasty thing he said about you to her. (Oh, yes he did!) Call into doubt his veracity by not being what she expects. Show them both how strong you are. 👍 Now go mess with her head. Good luck.

You’ve got some good sound advice loaded in here. I know she and I will have to sit down to talk eventually. Just like was said, I want to be prepared. You gave me the script. They don’t teach you this is RCIA, school, or anywhere. This is one of those life lessons you have to learn along the way. Your advice is something that most of my good hearted friends and family would not be able to muster up. Mainly because when I hurt they hurt - they don’t want me an any way to approach her but I know I have to. I know that there must be someone to act mature in this situation. I like that I should write it out first. This will help me stay focused and not turn into a blithering idiot, or an emotional reck. I don’t plan to meet tomorrow. But, I will take my time to prepare myself for the meeting. This is why I solicited advice like I did today. I just want to say WOW! Thank you for the advice. If my mother were alive she would probably advise in the same manner.

*Too bad we all don’t live closer…we could ALL meet her for lunch. 😃

Praying for your hazel! I really love your username by the way. Know that we will be here for you. Even though we have never met, some of us have directly felt your pain, and others like me, have witnessed this type of thing in family. It is horrible. But, we will be praying for you, and all involved. There are a lot of social groups on here, you should join one that you feel might be able to help you …great people here!*

:hug1:

No way do you have to respond to this person, I do not know how she even got a hold of your information, but she has got a lot of nerve. There is absolutely no need for you to have any communication with her, none!

Speak to your husband about getting her to keep her distance. She does not sound long term even for him so no need to introduce the kids. It is too early anyway. There has to be sustainable courtship or engagement, and with your relationship with your husband still being negotiated or workable, this has instability written all over it. Do not get the kids involved, keep her away from them, and thank God he has to have supervised visits.

If this goes long term or they got engaged (by some act of ill fate, this just doesn’t sound like it will ever come together), then get counseled by your pastor or associate priest about what proper actions to take on this, should you have to mix families. I would not put too much stock into this though, if your husband is still talking to you about your relationship, he is keeping this other person around, but not because he loves her.

Your husband is behaving with no regard for life, making as though you and the kids are expendable, what makes this woman think she will not be treated in the same regard as that? Women, who get men this way, always live with insecurities because deep down they know they were wrong to have invaded in the first place (it is like the guilt most women have after abortion, it never leaves, never).

This is the umpteenth time I am hearing stories like this. This is where too much freedom becomes a nuisance. Everything seen on media just has to become acceptable…, oh my foot, it does! I can’t understand how these home-wreckers do this, and not think there will ever be repercussion for their actions. Do unto others as you want done to yourself, right? Does she want the same thing to happen to her? Idiot!

If she keeps pursuing this, yes, like many have mentioned, get a restraining order. You already have proof by way of email that she is initiating and/or harassing you. She sounds a bit psychotic for even doing what she did and now imposing herself on your territory.

Plainly, I would take every opportunity at this point to snub and ignore any way of communication she makes with you, however I would document all the times she tries to, just incase you need to prove she is hounding you. I would take every opportunity to talk to your husband when he calls, especially when he calls to only talk about you, the kids, or the obligations and responsibilities, and again document it, too. Sorry to sound so political, but I have done record keeping, and you never believe how handy information becomes as time goes on. I would never even suggest record keeping if this had to deal with only you two, but the mere fact that he strayed, places me in a position to empathize with you and feel as though there is no more trust, because he threw that out the window along with his vows.

Next time she contacts you tell her you are going to get a restraining order against her if she EVER contacts or comes near you again.
I completely agree. I would begin logging her harrassing phone calls, and tell her so. Calmly tell her that her calls are no longer welcome, and that you are keeping a record of her calls. Inform her that if she continues to contact you, you will file for a restraining order. Tell her she is disturbing the peace within the home you are trying to create for your children.

I have no idea what is wrong with some men these days. Don’t they get the marital vow? That a promise isn’t temporary? I am dealing with similar issues. It may sound strange, but be grateful that at least you know 100% for sure that he was unfaithful. I am going through a separation with my husband, and one of the issues is that I strongly suspect an affair, and have many, many red flags but my husband, who is very persistent, keeps INSISTING is did not happen, so I am struggling with guilt about that, too.

I am praying for you. Please PM if you ever want to commisserate. :imsorry:

… I was informed right before Easter that he has a new girlfriend, she called to introduce herself and to invite me to lunch. I was shocked and floored by her boldness. She thought it was time that we meet. I have avoided meeting the girlfriend and have informed my husband that I have no intention of meeting her, and asked that she never call me again. She has continued to contact me. I have complete custody of the children. The only time he spends time with them is when he comes to my home. The girlfriend recently called me again saying that is time that we meet and that she had a gift for my daughter and she let me know that they are now living together. I have become outraged by the way both of them are handeling this. Despite our separation my husband and I have been very cordial in the co-parenting of our children. The girlfriend is ready to be a part of my children’s life. We have filed for divorce. … Because I have to learn of my husband’s tantics from his girlfriend and I feel as though they have no regard for my feelings and the well being of our children, I no longer what to ever see my husband. It is too painful. I don’t know what to do about the kids and how to handle visitation with their dad. I’m not ready for them to meet his girlfriend and I am sure it would be too much of a shock for them too. My children’s ages are 12,10 and 5. I don’t know what to do. Any advice?

I’d invite her to coffee at a local shop. Just the two of us. I’d have my hair and clothes and makeup flawless. I’d be gracious. Anyone that eager to have an audience with you deserves one! ;)…Give her her money’s worth, darlin!
I gotta admit, that was an entertaining reply! 😃 I do agree mainly with the fact that throughout what she said, she maintained that YOU are the one in control, HazelEyes.

I have some differing opinions…, but may I ask, is the WAY you found out about his affair was from her phone call?!

Honestly, someone w/that amount of arrogance is either really young and just absolutely clueless, in which case you almost feel sorry for her, or she’s just so used to being used that this is her only way of getting any control over something…in which case you almost feel sorry for her. Eh…almost.

I had to take a deep cleansing breath b/f I replied to this b/c I think you’ve received some really great advice from people much better than me, b/c it’s things like this that make me what to throw my Christian charity right out the window. Thankfully, it’s best and wise to wait b/f you say or do anything. My heart honestly breaks for you and for your children, who inevitably will be caught in the middle of all these things they have no way of even beginning to understand. I was one of those children.

Flat out: I would not meet w/her…Noooo way. If not for any other reason than b/c SHE’s the one that asked! What is it that you need to discuss w/her? Your children are the responsibilty of you and your husband. I really don’t see where you would have to explain N-E-thing to her. This is not a mergers and acquistions meeting. (please understand, my tone is harsh not AT you but FOR you)

Honestly, the audacity of her to summon you to a meeting is absolutely absurd and borders on the deranged. To meet w/her you would be sending a clear signal that you are open to having HER dictate to you the when’s & why’s of how things are going to go down as she helps to destroy your marriage. Is she gonna give you a pat on the head, too? Thanks for keeping him occupied and bearing him some kids over the last 12yrs, but I’ll be taking over now.

When the children are at issue, as they will be frequently, I suggest you discuss those issues with your husband and him alone. He’s a big boy and shouldn’t need his g/f to settle issues or lay out plans regarding the kids. Nooo way do you let him out of that.

And in the eyes of God, he IS your husband - but that affirmation is for you. Him being your husband is clearly of no concern or care of hers and honestly, I don’t think it’s his either. His tripping all over himself when he talks about reconciling, in my opinion is just a grrreat manipulation tool. Look at it from his point of view, he’s got the best of it, here. He gets to do AS LITTLE as possible and reap all the “benefits”. He’s got the history w/you to use to manipulate you into “keeping him from falling”, like you said; he’s got her to lust after, and he’s got his children, whom he can see whenever he wants, and he gets to be the “good guy” with them. I mean, I’m getting this visual, fair or not, of him sitting back in the ‘ol lazy boy just watchin’ the show…heh-heh…let them (you and the g/f) fight it out…At what point did you dealing with “the other woman” become YOUR wifely responsibility?!

I would tell him that HE needs to be the one to stop her from contacting you. Make it HIS responsibility. If he doesn’t make her stop, calmly tell him that you will be forced to take legal action and that all calls, texts, visits, or other attempts to contact you will be reported to your attorney for use in the divorce proceedings as a form of harrasment. Period.

If he’s gonna leave you, make him own it. We are all accountable for our actions. And that said, I pray God gives you the grace you will need to handle this with all Christian charity. That doesn’t mean it’s not okay to feel angry. Just don’t let it consume you.

See if you can meet w/a Priest about this. You’ll need his spiritual guidance to get you through this. And just love the beejeezels out of your kids. Put all your energy into letting them know that you love them no matter what happens, and that more importantly, it’s okay to be sad and confused, but to know that God has not abandoned any of you.

My prayers are with you.

In all honesty, he just turns into a babbling idiot. He talks about all the hurt he has done to me. How he doesn’t want to hurt me anymore, etc. At the time he says all the things he needs to say to keet everything kosher. He says he doesn’t want to lie anymore and that he wants to work on being more honest, (LOL!) Then he says that he is not the Christian husband I need him to be. He goes on a pitty party so that I feel sorry for him and want to try to help him. The Lord has placed on my heart that he will continue to do what he does as long as I am there to keep him from falling. I don’t know how to completely release and let him fall. When he starts to fall, I’m there to pick him up, mainly because he uses our separation as the excuse for his current failures.
I’m sorry, Sister, that you must suffer so, And I’m sorry for the pain that your 12;10; years children and little 5 years old child must be feeling now. But I know that for a child could wish nothing more than mom and dad love each other and live in love, for a child she neither saw nor understood all about this, Oh! …
I prayed and weeping for you, Sister, try to work out with your husband, you love him and please take your husband back! even if you should accept with humility and patience? Because it’s good for children…

May God look after you and your children, and we are here pray for you.

Your husband is playing you with his pity parties. He’s manipulating you. It’s likely he has similar pity parties with his girlfriend. That she wants to meet with you may indicate she has a firm belief that the marriage is irreconcilable, and that it’s inevitable that she and your husband will eventually marry – so, she wants to be “friends” with you from the get go to make it easier on herself and your husband. Ignore her at this time. You need to protect your interests and your children’s interests for now.

I hope you have a separation and maintenance agreement in place. I hope you’ve met with an attorney, to protect all assets, not just for your sake, but for your children’s. Do NOT trust anything your husband says. Feigned penitence, feigned self-recrimination, feigned assurance that he’ll never harm you and the children, are useful tools for cheating spouses, to keep the innocent spouses at bay. Protect your assets before he hides them from you. I may be 100% wrong, but do this anyway, just in case.

Keep praying for yourself, your children, AND for your spouse. But don’t enable his sinful behaviors. If you’re able to, see a counselor to help you be assertive and to deal with your grief.

Perhaps he will come around and seek sincere reconciliation with you. But that should completely be his doing, without you making any compromises in the process. Do not give your husband the benefit of any doubt at this point. You should not let him return to the family home until you know with certainty that he has completely broken off the relationship with his girlfriend that that he has undergone a lengthy course of therapy. You must safeguard your emotional and material needs for the sake of your children.

I am recently separated from my husband of 12 years. We have a been separate a little over a year. We have three children. The separation is the result of an ongoing affair. I was informed right before Easter that he has a new girlfriend, she called to introduce herself and to invite me to lunch. I was shocked and floored by her boldness. The girlfriend is ready to be a part of my children’s life. We have filed for divorce. We have not yet talked with the children about the finality of our relationship. Because I have to learn of my husband’s tantics from his girlfriend and I feel as though they have no regard for my feelings and the well being of our children, I no longer what to ever see my husband. It is too painful. I don’t know what to do about the kids and how to handle visitation with their dad. Ouch. My ex has a girlfriend too, and I have absolutely no desire to meet her. Or any of his other girlfriends (yes, he probably does have others, and his girlfriend #1 is okay with that). I would either: A) Want to punch the girlfriend in the face (yes, I know, not Catholic of me, but that is my gut instinct, and I am not a violent person at all, normally) ; or B) Become a complete emotional mess, and completely humiliate myself (more than I have been already, because this whole business is so flipping humiliating).

The nerve of her to ask you to meet. Eek! You have every right to refuse until you are ready emotionally. You have the right to get a restraining order if she continues to insist on contacting you. I would keep the kids away from her as long as possible, espeically considering their ages.

You are seeing this very clearly. This is exactly what the situation has turned into. All for me trying to keep whatever form of normal in tack. She doesn’t like the fact that we still do things as a family. She is upset that she gets left out of the event. So she then contacts me before a major event to throw me off my rocker. Like the day my kids were baptisted. Before my daughter’s birthday party. He definitely needs to grow up.

*Maybe disconnect your phone, and get your own cell phone, if nothing else. :o Truthfully, she sounds scary. Creepy scary, like Fatal Attraction scary. 😦 Be careful. Protect yourself. If she keeps it up, I’d get the restraining order. Your husband has to make a choice. Can’t have it both ways…can’t be married, and date other women. You have been more than patient, and I will be praying for you. *

I am right there with you. It saddens my heart the level of moral neglect that goes on in our society. There is such a lack of a moral conscience. The younger generation has become desenitized to their own actions. They feel as if they are better. I know she thinks she is better than me and that she can do things better than me. The funny and sad part in the little 20% of what she is able to do better, she can only do that because she has no kids, and very little responsiblity. I have gotten advice on retailiation. I always say no way. I don’t want it coming back at me. When it comes back at them, it will be just what they need for a wake up call. In the meantime, everyone is right, I have my kids to worry about. They are my jewels and my gems. They are some great kids.

Ooh, this is new information. Puts a whole new light on things.

Sounds like he’s found himself a real winner. 👍

Don’t worry. She’ll end up making him miss you! She sounds like she’s one sandwich shy of a full picnic basket. Two words: Caller ID.

HazelEyes,

God is and will bless you in all of this. I am not taking anything away from the advice you’ve been given here - it is all wonderful. I do, though, have a different perspective.

I am at the one year anniversary of finding out about my husband’s affair (of 7 months) and his ending the affair. The first week and a half after he ended it was the most difficult. We learned a lot through it and since then. He entered the affair while in the midst of severe depression, and she became his anti-depressant. When he ended it, he had horrible withdrawal symptoms. He couldn’t stand the woman, but he couldn’t get her out of his mind. I have learned that, on average, involved spouses return to the affair partner 3 times. It was after his third attempt to contact her that he came to his senses.

I say this because, it is possible that your husband is addicted to this woman. Is he willing to go to counseling? I highly recommend contacting www.affairrecovery.com. They have a weekend course that is supposed to be wonderful. And their program for the betrayed spouses is excellent (no matter what happends in your marriage).

This, of course, doesn’t mean that you do not need to protect yourself and your children. Some of my worst memories are the ones of the times that my daughter and I spent with my husband’s whore. It is much too involved to go into here, but he was afraid to tell her “no” when she wanted to do things with us. I am disgusted and sick over the contact she had with us. I truly had no idea (at the time) what she was about.

Please, do not take her calls or have any contact with her. And definitely don’t allow her to contact your children. You can definitely put in your separation agreement that she is to have no contact with the children. She obviously doesn’t care a fig about them. If she did, she would leave their father alone. Your lawyer can also advise you to how you should handle further contacts.

I am curious about what your husband has to say about her calls. I can’t imagine that he thinks it is good. I wonder why he is allowing it. Might she be threatening him in some way?

I don’t know if this is helpful in any way. Please feel free to PM me at any time.

That is sickening. I’m so sorry you and your daughter endured that. And just like you, HazelEyes should never have to go through that. As if the affair wasn’t enough to deal with…

HazelEyes, it sounds like your’ “husband” is either afraid of putting his foot down regarding this woman’s behavior -OR- what I suspect is more likely, is that he doesn’t care. Why should he have to do that work when it’s clear the g/f is taking the lead? Like I mentioned b/f - he’s getting the benefit of doing as little as possible in all of this. I mean, if he’s gonna carry on like this and rip his family apart, he should at least MAN UP and own it. He’s letting this woman do this to your family, and I wouldn’t put up with it for another nano-second.

I would have a hard time doing things as a family w/him, but that’s a way more complicated issue, and one that only you can make that determination for your family. I had to laugh at her “not liking it” when you do things together as family…I mean, really.

Another thought I had is that is it possible that your husband is using you and your family time as a way of manipulating the g/f? Let’s say they have a fight, and trust me, they’re having fights about this, isn’t it plausible that he could tell her, “oh yeah, well, I’ll just go spend time w/my family!” How ticked would she be then? There’s gonna come a point where someone’s gonna have to be the grown up here. Sadly, that person is probably going to be you. But at this point, it sounds like you’re the only one that’s thinking about the effects of all of this on your children. I would keep her waaaay far away from your children and again, you should have ZERO contact w/her. Eventually, though, You’re going to have to draw the line in the sand. He shouldn’t be allowed to continue in this fashion - NO way.
Be assured of my contined prayers

Hurtandhealing,
Thank you for the website. I will definitely check it out. He refusing counseling. I will approach him again with it. No matter which way this goes we as a family will need it for further growth and development. The addiction is real. He probably instigates the fights for the make up. Part of the pattern. Part of the manipulation.

Her “hubands girlfriend” should keep in mind the old adage “When a man leaves his wife to marry his mistress he creates an opening in both positions”.
