Hello everyone.

I’m a teenager in the last year of high school. When the school year finishes (without any failed subject), one has to do a national exam for entering college.

Things have changed a lot for me these past years. In particular, the two optional preparatory years for college. It’s a long story.

Before them, my grades in some subjects weren’t the best ones. I was studying the middle grade of Music (being outside my town and having to have passed an entrance exam) in the afternoon by then, although I quitted at the end of third cycle because Music required me an effort and dedication that unfortunately I wasn’t able to give anymore at this level at school). Nonetheless, I could get really good grades in general. All my life I have been a student with excelent grades.

When this two years came… everything fell on me. My grades dropped at high speed. Last year I managed to pass all the subjects, though this year I started to fail subjects. I was horrified by the thought of my parents (especially my mother) getting angry at me.
It’s been a long time since I don’t feel very well although the fear paralyzed me. Thinking about being labeled as crazy or all what could go wrong stopped me in my tracks.

I got the courage to telling my mother how I was feeling and what was happening. She helped me looking for a private teacher. Now I share everything with her and I can pass exams that before I couldn’t even start or do properly. Even though, I’m still struggling with the subjects that I failed (the topics I failed before telling my mother or the ones hard for me to understand) or need a significant amount of memorizing. Anyway, I have improved a lot compared to the first semester.

The problem is, my grades in these two years are the 60 % and the national exam is the 40% of the mark one has to choose a degree. Almost all science degrees (I chose the biological science path) have a minimum grade of 10/12 more or less. My terrible grades had left me out of the race for these ones. While first I have to take care of passing the ones I failed. I’m worried I won’t be able to pass them in this month as I have the pressure of having the national exam in June and the possibility of having to stay another year at home. All I can do for now is trying my best I guess.

What leaves me thinking is, where I should go after that? What if my grades are not enough for anything? What is the sense of having musical, artistic or writing abilities? People underestimate them and think they are too easy or have no value. Then, when you are inside of that (tough) world, you are only a pawn surrounded by a fierce competition of outstanding, very young and gifted artists fighting for one of the few positions left. What path I should choose for not ending without nothing? Why even bother if I am not able to compete against their skills? I don’t want to be a fool blinded by impossible dreams. I can’t go practising anywhere to know more about careers and discover definitely what I would like to do.

To be continued ------->

I try to think positively. Really, I try. But it’s really hard for me. I tell my parents, although it’s like the don’t fully understand it. I feel awful since I can’t blame anyone and I know that all has been my fault. For not doing anything nor having the willpower to change my situation. For actually being really lazy and this stuff about not studying (more) (falling asleep and ending up feeling anxious the next morning) and being tired or wanting to sleep throughout the day are just excuses for (self-)pity. Like my ranting. For being melodramatic and crying about the littlest issue. For not appreciate how privileged I am. For letting down my parents that have worked so hard for giving me the chance they could never have. For taking lightly serious illnesses trying to play the role of the sick.
I will go to the doctor for a blood test though to see if what is happening to me is normal or not…

I see my mother. Her father died some years ago because of lymphatic cancer. She was recently diagnosed with a benign tumor in her thyroid gland. I try not to overthink and having hope. Sometimes I think if in the future I will be next one and it’s horrifying. The family situation it’s complicated, but that’s another matter. It’s the main reason of her stress and her arguments with my father. Then I go myself, the last straw. However, she wakes up for another day and keeps fighting.
I see people suffering the horrors of war or poverty. Young people who die or is chronically ill (even at risk of dying). People who went through really difficult situations. They are humble, joyful, pious and grateful. Instead, I am pathetically complaining. My responsibilities are minimum and I can’t even keep up with them.

It’s like living in a continuous Limbo. I’m not in the misery of the depths nor in the side of the gifted with a brilliant future. Just wandering without figuring out where I should go.
I see all that gifted young people. They have amazing and defined talents and believe in their dreams or possibilities. They are able to make a living out of it.
I also see all these enthusiastic, traditional and faithful young christians who know what their vocations are, evangelize, work for charity or their church helping those in need, go to World Youth Day, know a lot about catholicism and run up blogs or create videos about it. Those martyrs for the faith. I do nothing. I feel stupid (there are not youth groups in my parish if you’re wondering).

I wonder if it’s envy doing the talking or I’m just despising, judging and belitting all those people in my head trying to find a redeemable quality inside me or a purpouse in life. I feel like I have been wasting my time having achieveing so little. I feel I know I can’t eliminate those thoughts if I first don’t recognize the darkness inside me and offer it along with my light to God.

Despite this, I’m like being inside heavy fog. I go to confession although it’s only held in Easter and before Christmas. I try to distinguish what a mortal sin is from what is venial but I always end up chosing the mortal sin option and asking for a Spiritual Communion in my bench (if that’s even possible) for a long time. Mainly when I think about my behaviour (evn the “what I could have done but I didn’t”), thoughts, not going to Mass (not because I don’t want to but) or how I didn’t study and I think I’m aware of it. How prideful I am for wanting things going my way or being selfish as I only think about my problems.

I want to truly trust in God even if I fall into despair again, as He is always with us, has everything under control and chosen the best path for us. Knowing Him better. Doing the common things out of love for Him. Having the willpower to pray more. See my life through a different glass. Though it’s really hard. The giving up oneself, carrying your cross with dignity (if I knew what my cross is) and “not thinking of oneself less but thinking about oneself less” (as well as thinking about possible consequences) is even harder in spite of sufferings making us humbler, more grateful for what we have and understand He is the one who gives and takes out of love.

Then my mind jumps at thoughts me ending up in Hell because of mortal sin or being a failure as a catholic, or my parents (as they have some issues but I have convinced them to come with me to Mass (although I don’t have 18 yet so some Sundays my mother doesn’t let me go even if I talk to her) and pray for them (the Lord can make the impossible possible)) and family. Or losing any merit I could have gained thanks to Him here on Earth. Offending His mercy with my negativity or despair. For this reason my mind tells me “why even try”.

Thank you for reading and sorry for the really long post. I had to get all this out of my chest.

God loves you very much and he understands your suffering. Don’t be too hard on yourself… I will pray for you.
Try reading some spiritual books. I would recommend you Story of a Soul (by St Therese of Lisieux), if you never read it. And Diary of St Faustina, too…
Remember that God can use all our crosses to sanctify us, only if we want to serve Him and leave every sin.
And about sacraments…maybe you could ask the parish priest to confess you sometimes? At least once a month. Sacraments are so important.

I wish you every blessing!

Dear Kyson,

Praise the Lord for your youth … we can make mistakes in our youth, and we have so much time to fix whatever needs to be fixed.

You seem to have a good handle on your faith in our Lord … no one is perfect when it comes to how we handle being a good Catholic … be kind to yourself and give yourself time in life to grow into it.

Throughout your two posts I hear someone who is very hard on herself … it’s good to be reflective of what you have done … but once something is done and over, we have nothing that we can do about it … we just have to move on … today is the most important day there is … that is what you need to tell yourself … what you do today is what is important … yesterday is gone and tomorrow is not a given … so just concentrate on what you are doing each individual day.

I will pray for you … and my wish is that your dreams in life come true … even if you don’t know what those dreams are yet.

God Bless.

Katherine

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle,
be our defense against the wickedness and snares

St. Thérèse of Liseux Prayer From “Story of A Soul”

May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received,
and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones,
and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise, and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.

Amen.

Lord, thank you that you are with me right now.
Your love surpasses all fear.
I give you the anxiety I feel.
I surrender all my worries to you.
Clear my mind;
Calm my heart;
Still my Spirit;
Relax my being, that, I may
always glorify you in everything
I write, speak and do.

Amen.

Jesus, Help Me

In every need let me come to Thee with humble trust, saying,
Jesus, help me!

In all my doubts, perplexities, and temptations,
Jesus, help me!

In hours of loneliness, weariness and trials,
Jesus, help me!

In the failure of my plans and hopes; in disappointments, troubles and sorrows,
Jesus, help me!

When my heart is cast down by failure, at seeing no good come from my efforts,
Jesus, help me!

When others fail me, and Thy grace alone can assist me,
Jesus, help me!

When I throw myself on Thy tender love as Father and Savior,
Jesus, help me!

When I feel impatient, and my cross irritates me,
Jesus, help me!

When sickness and loneliness overcome me,
Jesus, help me!

Always, in weakness, falls and shortcomings of every kind,
Jesus, help me and never forsake me.

Thank You, dear Lord Jesus.

Amen.

Sweet Heart of Jesus, be my love.
Sweet Heart of my Jesus, grant that I may always love You more.
Heart of Jesus, burning with love for us, set our hearts on fire with love of You.
Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like Your Heart.

Amen.

Prayers said. All will be well. Do not fear, the Lord is protecting you.
Do not be lonely, your guardian angel is beside you.
Be comforted, Mother will watch over you, and the
Holy Spirit will guide you.

Prayer Against Depression
………….By St Ignatius of Loyola

O Christ Jesus
When all is darkness
And we feel our weakness and helplessness,
Give us the sense of Your Presence,
Your Love and Your Strength.
Help us to have perfect trust
In Your protecting love
And strengthening power,
So that nothing may frighten or worry us,
For, living close to You,
We shall see Your Hand,
Your Purpose, Your Will through all things.

Amen.

Let Nothing Disturb You

Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.

Patience,
Obtains all things,
Whoever has God
Lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.

My Jesus,
I believe that You are
present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and
I desire to receive You into my soul.
**Since I cannot at this moment receive
You sacramentally, come at least spiritually
into my heart. I embrace You
as if You were already there and
unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated
from You.

Amen.

Piarist fathers have taught this short act of
Spiritual Communion, popularized by St. Josemaria Escriva:

I wish, Lord, to receive You with the purity, humility and
devotion with which Your most holy Mother received You, with the
spirit and fervour of the saints.

Amen.

**
Thank You dear Lord Jesus, always and
everywhere, for everything.

Amen.

Jesus, I trust in You.

Amen.

Try to go to confession once a month and follow the priest’s counsel. Develop a prayer life, talking with God. He will lead you out of this feeling of confusion and give you direction.
  • I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.*
    ~Psalms 32:8
Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

For Help in Trials

Most holy apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered your beloved Master into the hands of His enemies has caused you to be forgotten by many. But the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases–of things despaired of. Pray for me who feels so hopeless. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege accorded to you of bringing visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolations and succor of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, in particular (Kyson), and that I may bless God with you and all the elect throughout eternity. I promise you, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady of Mental Peace

O Lady of Mental Peace,
Mother of Tranquility
and Mother of Hope,
look upon Kyson in this time
of weakness and unrest.

Teach her searching heart
to know that God’s Love
for her is unchanging and
unchangeable, and, that
true human love can only
begin and grow by touching
His Love.

Let your gentle Peace -
which this world cannot give
  • be always with her.
And, help her to bring this
    same Peace into the lives
    of others.
Our Lady of Mental Peace,
  • Pray for us!
    Amen.
Jesus, Help Me!

In every need let me come to You with humble trust,
saying:
Jesus, help me!
In all my doubts, perplexities, and temptations:
Jesus, help me!
In hours of loneliness, weariness and trials:
Jesus, help me!
In the failure of my plans and hopes, in disappointments,
troubles and sorrows:
Jesus, help me!
When others fail me, and Your Grace alone can assist me:
Jesus, help me!
When I throw myself on Your tender Love as Savior:
Jesus, help me!
When my heart is cast down by failure, at seeing no good
come from my efforts:
Jesus, help me!
When I feel impatient, and my cross irritates me:
Jesus, help me!
When I am ill, and my head and hands cannot work and
I am lonely:
Jesus, help me!

Always, always, in spite of weakness, falls and short-
comings of every kind:
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, help me and never forsake me!

Amen

Dear God, give me courage,
for perhaps I lack it more than anything else.

I need courage before men against their threats
and against their seductions.

I need courage to bear unkindness,
mockery, contradiction.

I need courage to fight against the devil,
against terrors and troubles, temptations,
attractions, darkness and false lights,
against tears, depression, and above all fear.

I need Your help, dear God.

Strengthen me with Your love and Your grace.

Console me with Your blessed Presence
and grant me the courage to persevere
until I am with You forever in heaven.

Amen.

**Good Saint Dymphna, great wonder-worker in every affliction of mind and body, I humbly implore your powerful intercession with Jesus through Mary, the Health of the Sick, in my present need. That M can stay in her home. Saint Dymphna, martyr of purity, patroness of those who suffer with nervous and mental afflictions, beloved child of Jesus and Mary, pray to Them for me and obtain my request.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Saint Dymphna, Virgin and Martyr, pray for us. Amen.

:highprayer:**

I hope your venting will help:), I labored at reading ALL
your post(s). I pray for your intentions:

Remember, O gracious Virgin Mary,
that never has it been known that
anyone who has fled to you for
protection, implored your help or
sought your intercession was left
unaided. Inspired by this confidence
we fly to you O Virgin of virgins,
our Mother. To you we come, before
you we stand, sinful and sorrowful,
O Mother of the Word Incarnate
despise not our petitions, but in your
mercy hear and answer us!!
Amen.

Thank every one of you, first, for reading both of my long posts, and then, for your answers and advices. I also appreciate all your prayers a lot. Prayer can make possible the impossible.

It’s hard to me to stop looking back to what wasn’t or worrying about what could happen, even if I know we have to live in the present day by day (as is the only thing we are able to change). Having in your mind every issue pointed out again and again in a cycle of overthinking does not help to “be positive”. I have better days and worse days with these matters. Parents arguing for the family situation at every chance (it’s not like it’s often, but) and my current situation at school as well as the feeling of tiredness/being sleepy almost all day or the nervousness strikes do not contribute to improving.

To those referring to confession:

I would love to be able to confess at least once a month and having a priest who could guide me, although my situation is tricky. I live in a (relative) small town. We have three churches where Mass is offered (there is a fourth one devoted to the Virgin Mary, yet is only opened during May (Her month) when flowers are offered to Her and special occasions). People who usually goes to Mass and pray the Rosary are old devoted women and men and adults (with their children in some cases).

I have no friends who want to go to Mass (as teenagers don’t go on Sundays except during Easter (where I live is a popular tradition) maybe), and nobody is interested in those things, so I go on my own and spending my time with my hobbies. I’m not better than anyone for that and I understand it. I like to talk with people (even if I’m shy at first or introverted) and I’m friendly with them at school but being friends is a leap too big when every one of them has their own closed groups and tastes I don’t share. One cannot force love nor frienship (is a type of love, after all). It just happens.

There are only two priests who are not from here. Confessions are only held, as I said, in Lent and before Christmas, with the help of some priests who come from other places. Before Mass, each of them is busy preparing all what they need in the sacristy (they only celebrate Mass together on special dates like the Easter Vigil), so they don’t confess anyone.

As this year could be my last year here (if I’m able to pass all my subjects and passing the national exam (I see it difficult, but I can’t talk before seeing what happens) before going to study something which I have no idea what could be (people like to say to me that I have talent for writing (and maybe some drawing skills), although how one expects to live with those? I can’t depend on my parents all my life (this year I will be of legal age on my country))), I don’t know if it’s worth it talking with one of them after Mass, as they don’t offer confessions for anyone.

To be continued ------->

To theklara9 who recommended me read some spiritual books:

It’s lovely you talked about the subject. Lately I have been coming back to my reading habit, as I discovered a wonderful list written by a former catholic seminarian (as he discovered it wasn’t his call) of spiritual readings (included the books of the Bible) divided into levels according to the difficulty of understanding them. This Easter I finished The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis and now I’m eager to start as soon as I can Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer by the same author. I want to finish all the C.S. Lewis essays first, as they are easy to understand yet deep in content.

Then I’m planning to move on to Chesterton’s essays. I readed some chapters from a Father Brown collection I bought (I still have to finish it) and I loved his style. You never know who the murderer is, and his wisdom is astounding. I recently bought a little book with prayers for all times from a Salesian publisher (I saw our parish gave it to children and I became interested on it).

My parents think I’m crazy buying all those books all of a sudden, haha. I have even convinced my little cousin to start reading The Chronicles of Narnia series (I haven’t read it although I thought it could help him gain a healthy hobby with some good books by C.S. Lewis).

The reason why I started with the basics again is because years ago I had some weird ideas. Catechesis makes no mention of dogmas nowadays. Well, maybe it would be more precise saying that they are mentioned but not explained (in some cases). There is also this trend of “being progressive is cool” undercovered. If you aren’t, you are a retrograde and you shouldn’t live on Earth. You can’t even have a different opinion without useless arguing or personal criticism. It’s a “good vibes” enviroment. You know, Jesus came here to teach us love and good morals. What would have been the point then? Today nobody follows Socrates, Stoics or Plato morals.

Two or three years ago a young priest came to our town (he is still here). It taught us religion education. I discovered a new whole world with him. Using philosopy and the Ways of St. Thomas Aquinas to see the value of reason, learning theology and the meaning of Bible verses… it was amazing. Most people didn’t care about it, so we couldn’t learn more. After his classes, I started to get interested again in my faith. I looked for information and tried to understand the position of the Church on the controversial issues. Maybe it was the work of the Lord for bringing me back to Him. I still have a long way to go. I don’t know many prayers and I wasn’t taught the Rosary. However, I like to go early to Mass and staying praying some parts of the Rosary in community. I would like to learn to pray it by myself when I’m more into my faith.

Talking about Mass. I mentioned earlier in the first two posts my mother’s condition (plus she was operated in one of her knees if I remember well and has pains in her back sometimes (she had to go to rehabilitation)). I understand she’s tired and maybe unable to go with me. What makes me sad is that everytime I try to go to Mass (Sunday or Holy Days of Obligation (I’m learning which ones are these yet) I have to enter into a nonsensical argument with her because she doesn’t comprehend why it has to be Sunday and it can’t be Monday for Sunday and tells me that I don’t want to understand her reasoning. I don’t have any reasons besides “as the Good Church says…” and that’s not going to convince her. In what way I could explain it to her? I always tell to her that I’m not obligating her to come, although she insist on it and if my father or someone else is not able to bring me there, she doesn’t let me go and I miss Mass (even if I wanted to go). It hurts, but then the words “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me” resonate inside my mind and I try to persuade to my father to bring me to Mass. I’m such a weak, I cry for everything.

Coming back, the issue lies in the mystical part. If the creation of Adam and Eve should be taken literally or not is something which I can try to figure out another day. What I don’t understand are topics like physical mortifications, apparitions and alarming visions or writings from saints.
I’m not referring to being against them.
First, when you learn about life of saints looks like physical mortification is a prerequisite for sainthood. Are there any saints who have lived a holy life just doing ordinary works of charity (offering themselves), praying and carrying his or her cross with joy? It wouldn’t be dangerous for people with certain tendencies to self-hate or mental illnesses? I know the value that suffering for Christ has, although I don’t see where is the line between promote physical mortification and looking for pain when people have their own misery (illnesses, poverty, war, hard situations…). Are spiritual mortifications less meritorious? The concept of merits is hard to grasp too.

Secondly, apparitions and alarming visions or writings. As I said before, there is no use in a happy-go-lucky view. Quite the contrary, as one tries to stop paying attention to the “rights for everything/it’s offensive” media, finish up submerged into the world of “going to Hell for everything very few make it to Heaven” news or articles everywhere on catholic media. Not forgetting those sedevacantism or Second Vatican Council hate web pages. Or quotes from here and there. One can never look for information or some nice news without ending up with scruples or panicking for a long time. It’s like one’s attempts are never enough and it discourages me from even trying. I’m not asking for undeserved glory. I just want to be able to start walking in peace.

Sorry for the really long posts, I don’t know how to make it shorter. Words come to me this way and I take my time to write them.

I’m a crazy fisherman so forgive me for the quote…Henry David Thoreau once said ”Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” I believe your faith is strong and in turn God will help you find your “fish”. Don’t stop casting!😉 I will keep you in my prayers.

I appreciate that you have taken the time to post here. There are so many people who need prayers more than me that I understand threads like this one are usually forgotten or submerged into the forum’s pages.

Thanks for your prayers (and for the fish 😃 ) . Well, people have been very supportive in this forum despite being a new member (I have the encouragement of my parents as well), although it’s hard for me to believe all those positive facts about me even if I want to.

Maybe I don’t know where I should go or I feel horrible and really tired some days, but I’m determined to pass this school year. In May or in September, it doesn’t matter. I won’t come back there; I have to go on. Even if I have to stay another year in my town before taking the national exam.

I guess I can post some of my questions individually in more appropriated forums when I finish this week my exams for passing my failed semesters.

Good luck on your National Exams!! I pray that
you will grow in the Grace and Knowledge of
