This one is long, but I really need some advice.

My boyfriend (soon to be ex) and I have been dating for almost two years now. We love each other deeply and our relationship has really grown spiritually this last year. We go to Mass together every week, we go to adoration together, and we pray and fast together too. We are also each others best friends. We both even share the same dreams of owning a small farm/homestead together and raising a good Catholic family. I feel I have never dated someone that I’m so compatible with. However, some things have happened that I’m just not so sure I can get past.

The first major thing is when I discovered that my boyfriend had been looking up inappropriate pictures of women for over a year via his facebook. The particular incident that I discovered, he looked at over 300 pictures on a Wednesday evening and then he later admitted he had been struggling with that for a while. I was able to forgive him, but now I get nervous every time he is online.

The second major thing happened about a month ago, I discovered that my bf had been hiding his ex-gf’s number under a man’s name, which he had to have been doing for at least six months because her number used to be under her own name. He apologized and explained that he only did that so I wouldn’t get upset whenever she would randomly text him (he unfortunately hasn’t told her it’s inappropriate for her to still be texting him) but that it was nothing more. I believe him to an extent but I hesitate to not believe there was nothing more going on. He promised the next time she texts him, he would tell her it’s inappropriate and do that in front of me as a means to gain my trust again. It hasn’t happened yet, but I don’t know how often she texts him anyway.

The third major thing, which happened this past weekend, was the worst of them all. We went over to one of his friend’s house to hang out and have some drinks. However, my bf had too much to drink and that’s where things started heading south. It all started with an inappropriate joke that he made about a girl we were talking about; he said “I’d still put it in.” An argument quickly started between us. To understand the next details, I have to explain that I’m currently in between jobs so he used that against me a lot that night. In front of his friends he said, “I’m not the one with no job or money.” I was very embarrassed and I didn’t want it to progress anymore in front of his friends so we left. On the drive home, he started insulting me even more. He told me that I have nothing going for me, that he’s a much better Catholic than I am, that I don’t know anything about the Catholic faith (I converted to the faith when I was 14 and have been a practicing Catholic for almost 10 years now), that I have no job or money, and that no good Catholic man would ever love me. Again to understand the next details, I have to explain that I experienced a car accident about two weeks ago and so had to purchase a new car. My bf was kind enough to loan me some money until the settlement from my insurance came through, which I would pay him back as soon as it did. Because he helped me, he used that against me as well that night. When we finally got to his driveway, I got my stuff from his house and then got back into my car to drive home. My bf ran out of the house towards my car and told me to “open the door or else he will break my window”. He then said “I own this car so don’t think I won’t hesitate to break the window.” He repeated that threat many times and I was scared to open the door for him so I tried to leave the driveway. As I was pulling out of the driveway, my boyfriend punched my window as many times as he could before I could finally drive off. The next day, my bf apologized and begged for my forgiveness. He said he was drunk and that he is terribly sorry for what he put me through. However, I am so hurt and traumatized by his actions that I have not been able to talk to him for the past three days.

I know I have to forgive him as a Catholic, but I’m not sure I can go back with him. He has NEVER done anything like that before to me. He has never threatened me or used violence so I am very confused where this all came from. It was all just so unprecedented and unexpected. He promised to never drink like that again and that he would never do anything like that again to me but now I worry what more is he capable of. He said he would do anything to gain my love back, but I just don’t think there is anything he could do. Was this all just the alcohol? I love him and am considering working together to get past this, but it saddens me deeply and scares me when I think about that night. A part of me feels I am not being very forgiving and compassionate, but another part of me feels I am not being prudent by considering getting back together with him. I am considering talking to a priest together with my bf to try and resolve this but I’m still not sure if I should even bother.

First of all take a deep breath and tell yourself forgiving him does not mean putting yourself in harm’s way. You may also want to talk to people you trust who know him as well and see what they think. They maybe saw or see things in him that you may have missed, such as warning flags or indicators. From the information you have gathered, you can make a decision whether or not to stay in the relationship.

Pray for guidance and grace as well.

It need not be that long and complicated. You need a new boyfriend. One who acts out of love for you and is sober.

👍

BTW, you don’t have to answer this here, but if you have passed a line of intimacy with him that you shouldn’t have, that will make it harder for you to see everything clearly. Keep that in mind if you are having a hard time breaking it off. Intimacy can create bonds that don’t need to be there prior to marriage and that can make things harder to stop when they need to be stopped.

I see a lot of red flags. God has something better planned for you. Trust Him and your instincts.

Get out of there. I’d lay odds there’s more going on there than he’s telling you - he’s hiding things, and if he’s not cheating now he’s on the road to it.

You can forgive him just fine from a distance. You don’t owe him a relationship. Just make a clean break of it - tell him sorry but it’s over, and stick to that.

Agreed.

I hate to say it, but the red flags are there. “You owe me something; you’re worthless; you’re lucky to have me.” This is how an abuser tries to manipulate a woman.

And the fact that he was drunk is no excuse. If he beat you up would his being drunk make it any better for you?

I can’t tell other people what to do but I know what I would do; leave the relationship before it’s too late.

Not complicated at all.
Step 1: Break up with him, never see him again or have any contact with him.
Step 2: Call police if necessary.

Simple. Not always easy, but very simple.

I would advise against getting a new boyfriend right now and for a while. You need to work on your relationship with yourself and possibly the Lord now, and a man will often get in the way of that.

You will have to be stronger than yourself, but you can make it.

OP, I know you have a lot of time invested in this guy, but really, he doesn’t respect you on so many levels. You deserve better than a guy that looks at porn, secretly is in contact with his old girlfriend and who is even more disrespectful to you in front of his friends. It doesn’t matter that he was drunk. Think of it as him being so uninhibited that he actually said what he felt.

So he apologized. It’s the least he could do.

Please, borrow the money from your family, pay him back immediately and say good bye.

I agree with what others have said. The fact that he said he is sorry and knows what he did was wrong is good, and you ought to forgive him yes. But this is not the foundation for a relationship. He is not ready to be in a relationship with anyone as he obviously has issues to deal with and it is not your responsibility to “fix him”. If he really loves you he will know that what he did means he does not deserve your love, if he were really sorry he would remove himself from you as he would recognise he isn’t ready to be close to you. Instead he wants to be sorry AND have you back, he wants to be able to apologise but not deal with the consequences of how he treated another human being. This isn’t someone who understands what they did to you or how they scared you.

I’m sorry that you had to experience this, hope you feel better with time, prayer and God’s love 🙂

God bless you whatever your choice

hugs

What would you say to your mom, sister, daughter, or best friend if she told you this story? I’m guessing you would insist that she leave him right away, and you would be completely right. You need to take care of yourself the way that you would take care of loved ones.

And as for forgiving him: If this happened to your mom, sister, daughter, or best friend, over time you could find it in yourself to forgive him, right? But even after you forgave him, you would never want your loved one to go back, right? See, it is possible to forgive without ever being willing to put yourself in harm’s way again.

Leave, don’t look back, and don’t feel guilty for that.

Leave. Escape him. Violence is a line that cannot be crossed. Physical violence is inexcusable under any circumstances, and in my view it should be an instantaneous deal-breaker. I’m sorry for you, too.

Im sorry this happened but I see it as a blessing in disguise that this came about before you married him. This is not the man for you. God is telling you that through this unfortunate experience and your deep down negative feelings about it. I will pray for you.

Keeping you in my prayers - you have a lot of good advice from other posters here. Don’t be scared of looking after yourself - yes, it is our duty to forgive but that may take you some time (and please, do not fall into the trap of thinking it is your fault)!

Just remember, all the outward signs of a ‘good’ Catholic may have been there with your boyfriend but it counts for nothing if it is not in his heart. Don’t get taken in by any pleading contrition either - that is for his conscience to sort out. Sorry if this sounds judgemental of him but I have seen how women can be manipulated by strong willed and minded men and it’s better to just stay clear.

You have been through emotional abuse, please see the signs.

Why didn’t he block his ex’s number and delete it? That is a sure-fire way to deal with her ‘random texts’.

He is a liar.

He needs a lot of help. Is he worth putting your safety in danger in order to help him?

From what you’ve said, I’m not convinced that he is.

The way he recently spoke to you, he was trying to make you believe that the only way you can survive is with him.

Do not believe his apology. There is danger here.

Right. Forgiveness doesn’t mean permitting someone to treat you badly: it means forgiving for past wrongs, period. Sometimes that means giving someone enough space that they can’t treat you like that again.

What everyone has said.
**I think you DO know what to do, but you’re scared to move on. **
There are other guys
Trust me.
We see lots of nice lonely Catholic men on CAF…they’re out there. Wait for the right one.
Quit him, don’t look back.
Why be another statistic?
Be strong. God does indeed have another plan for you.
Let go of the relationship and don’t look back. No regrets.
Only hope, and joy in Christ.

Imagine that you had kids with you then. How would they feel watching Daddy punch the window and insulting Mom?

A good Catholic man does not do this. Period.

Get out. And don’t look back.

Praying for you.

Forgive him, pray for him, AND leave him. Based on everything you described, he needs help and even though you care for him deeply, you can’t fix him. He does not value you and it only took getting drunk for him to show his true colors. That he attempted to punch out your car window says to me that he has some major anger issues and your personal safety is in jeopardy should you stay with him. I would call him and tell him it’s over . Any of his personal items that you might have, ship them to him. Then cut off all contact. Please, if you haven’t, make sure you tell a trusted friend about this incident. Call the police if he threatens you again.

I think it’s really clear what you should do. I don’t think you should be at all confused any more. It should be done and over with. Please, now is the time you can make a positive move away from this, and be very careful with your next relationship. You don’t want this to be a pattern.

Be Strong!
