Reading all about the priest abuse scandal is difficult because I can’t distinguish the truth from the bad information from the outright lies. I was hoping someone could provide an explanation of what exactly happened, particularly in regards to these accusations of cover-ups and the Pope interfering in the canonical trials of priests accused of molestation. I don’t trust the media and so I feel that what is being reported is largely untrue or at the very least a misunderstanding of what really happened.

Just wanted to second this - because I have been reading the newspapers and listening to the television news and I am totally confused now!

Here in England, the papers seem to be saying on one hand that the current pope, Benedict, was committed to undertaking a thorough investigation into sexual abuse in the Church when he was Cardinal, but the previous Pope (John Paul II) put a stop to his efforts. However, the same papers also carry editorials and other articles that suggest Pope Benedict is responsible for undermining the credibility of the Church:confused:

Both popes were trying to fix the problem, but it is not as easy to fix as it would seem.

The only ones that we know are at fault here are the abusers themselves. We should focus more on fixing that problem than determining if the Vatican itself had anything to do with it.
