Not that it was unexpected, but it’s nice to see it happen. Consistories are always fun. 🙂
 
Congrats to Cardinal Burke, a true ‘Lion’ for the Faith (his middle name is ‘Leo’ 😃 ) !

And congrats to the new Cardinal for Washington, DC, Wuerl…maybe with this new title, he’ll have more authority to go after Pelosi and other CINO politicians up there on Capitol Hill.

Yes, the Catholics in St. Louis (and his native LaCrosse, Wisconsin) have much to cheer about!
 
God bless the Cardinal with the cheese hat! I would love to see the Wisconsin native succeed Pope Benedict…many many years from now.
Cardinal Burke will be interviewed on Catholic Answers radio next Wednesday. You can all call in and congratulate him at that time.

Thanks be to God for this wonderful news! This Missourian and St. Louis suburbanite is very happy that Cardinal Burke, a good and holy man who is steadfast and faithful to the teachings of Holy Mother Church, is now truly a St. Louis Cardinal!

Yes, normally I’m a Cubs fan, but in this case I’ll make an exception. 😛
 
wuerl’s selection is a disappointment in my opinion. he said he wouldn’t use communion as a weapon meaning he wouldn’t refuse communion to these pro-abortion catholics. i wonder if he would have said the same thing if they were pro segregation? i think the last thing we need in the church is more of this milk-toast catholicism. but ranjith and burke are excellent bishops!

I was thinking similarly. I’m not a fan of Wuerl’s, I haven’t been since he was bishop here. I don’t think he’s going to be that outspoken on this issue. He is very much the “charmer”, but maybe he’ll suprise me.
 
Let’s not go hatin’ on Wuerl. 😛 I have the utmost respect for him. He has a heart for catechesis. His The Teaching of Christ was the only useable catechism for adults throughout the 70’s and 80’s. I also think he deserves at least some of the credit for the fact that so many of the recently appointed bishops are coming out of Pittsburgh. He had to be doing something right while he was there. 🙂

We might question the pastoral prudence of his implementation of canon 915 (I have questions about that myself), but make no mistake, he is a good man. I for one am very happy for him.

Of course, we can’t be that surprised with Wuerl’s selection. DC is the capital of the U.S. and the head of the Church in DC has always been a cardinal since the Archdiocese of Washington DC was created. The only thing the Pope was waiting for was for Wuerl’s predecessor Cardinal McCarrick to turn 80 and thus no longer be eligible to vote in a conclave (which happened back in July).

i see where you’re coming from. but i still think the days for us to be quite and obedient to every action of our church’s management are over. we need to be more vocal because in my opinion, the laity and saints (mother angelica) are now the bulwark of orthodoxy–not the elected princes of the church.

I use to feel the same way about Wuerl, until I had to work with him personally a few times within the youth ministry in the diocese. And I’m not surprised he was picked, he seemed to always be destined for being a cardinal. But the contrast between Wuerl and Bishop Zubick, wow. I absolutely love, love, love Bishop Zubick and the way he is guiding the diocese compared to the way Bishop Wuerl oversaw things. I think the arguement can be made that both Wuerl and Zubick were/are exactly what my diocese needed/needs at the time.

Fair enough. Good to hear you like Bishop Zubick and the job he is doing. I haven’t heard much about him, so I’m glad he’s doing good things!
 
I have had the opportunity to meet both Cardinal-designate Wuerl and Bishop Zubik. Both are good men who work very hard and care deeply for their fellow priests and for the Church.

Cardinal-designate Wuerl was one of the toughest bishops in dealing with priest abuse situations.

One thing that is not entirely the fault of these Bishops is that the Pittsburgh Diocese has been lacking in the number of priestly vocations. Pittsburgh is in the top 20 in the number of Catholics in the diocese and has more Catholics than many Archdioceses. Given that fact, there ought to be more vocations than we have (JMHO).

Neither Cardinal-designate Wuerl nor Bishop Zubik seem to be big proponents of the Extradordinary Form. This I regret much.

All of our clergy need our prayers and support.

I thought Cardinal-designate Wuerl celebrated an EF Mass at the BSNIC once…that was the first time I had ever seen an EF Mass live (I watched it on EWTN).

Back to my other point…Good to see them in these ranks (God bless 'em both!) However, I’m saving my biggest jubilee for when Archbishop Dolan is named a Cardinal (which likely won’t be until after Cardinal Egan turns 80)
