WASHINGTON - Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., the only female veteran in Congress, said Friday she will try to kill a provision in a defense bill that would limit the role of women in ground combat zones.
“It’s both unnecessary and unhelpful,” said Wilson, who is an Air Force veteran.
The House is to vote on a $442 billion Defense Department budget bill next week.
The provision would put into law a 1994 Pentagon policy that bans female troops from working in units below brigade level whose primary mission is direct ground combat. The policy prohibits women from serving in infantry, armor or artillery units, but allows the services to open some jobs to women in combat zones as needed as long as they inform Congress of the change.
