If everyone had of been honest and above board in the beginning and called a spade a spade, there would not be lawsuits, perhaps a settlement.
I agree, but as Mercy Mia pointed out, the law applies only to Catholic institutions. What about all the cover up in the public schools? We have a public school here that hired a defrocked priest as a janitor. When it was found out he was an EX priest, what do you think the headlines read?

A) “EX PRIEST ACCUSED OF ABUSING GIRLS!!!”

or

B) “janitor in public school molested girls.”

(It was A)

ALL ABUSE must be be held to the same rule of law.

One more thought: Sometimes a little bankruptcy can be good for the soul.
So all the money that the Church puts into education, missionary work, hospitals and charities should line the pockets of “Catholic Chaser” lawyers?

Think before you post. sheehs

Well here I read about the abuse of others rather than Catholics in the paper about 2-3 times a week. The CC has a standard to be aware of.

Absolutely the CC has a higher standard to uphold - especially to Catholics - who feel betrayed. But for the secular society which promotes homosexuality and sexual license, it’s a bit hypocritical.

Believe me, I’m betrayed. I cry every time I hear of another abuse. It’s awful. I love our priests, and it’s so hard to imagine them doing something so evil.

God bless you Tweety

That would apply to claimants as well as the church and bishops and priests. When there is money to be had, false claims come out of the woodwork.
Wall Street Journal:
That the scandals that began reaching flood tide in the late '90s had to do with charges all too amply documented, and that involved true predators, no one would dispute. Nor can there be much doubt that those scandals, their nonstop press coverage, and the irresistible pressure on the church to show proof of cleansing **resulted in a system that rewarded false claims along with the true. **An expensive arrangement, that–in more ways than one.

It’s all about the money, you see.
It is all about the money but not in the way you are implying. The attorneys who are making millions off the suffering of abuse victims are running out of cases. The number of new allegations last year was 6, compared to over 400 in a single year in the 80s (the peak). With fewer current cases to pursue the lawyers are trolling older and older cases looking for a cash stream. I heard today of a case where the alleged abuse occured in the 1930s. The victim is himself aged, let alone the accused or any witnesses who are all probably dead.

A change like this will not save *a single child *from abuse. No organization on the planet has done more to protect children from abuse than the Catholic Church in the US has done in the last 15 years. Were they slow to “get” it? Yes. Did they make horrible mistakes along the way? Absolutely. But the safeguards in place now are what is protecting children. A cold case allegation, even if successfully litigated (via trial or settlement) will not protect anyone. It only serves to transfer money from the poor and needy to the lawyers.

The CT law is doubly flawed since, as was the case in a failed attempt in Colorado, it exempts the group of abusers most likely to prey on children - public school teachers!

Everyone should be against this bill. It is bad law and bad social justice.

I think a very relevant point is that a great deal of child pornography was found in the alleged abuser’s former home in 2007. That means there is solid evidence for at least some cases that are currently not within the statute of limitations.

from the first post:
Although the proposal would apply to all child sexual abuse victims, it would almost certainly affect the cases against St. Francis Hospital involving Dr. George Reardon, who practiced at the hospital from 1963 to 1993 and is believed to have abused as many as 500 children. Reardon died in 1998, but in 2007, the owner of Reardon’s former home found more than 50,000 slides and 100 movie reels of child pornography hidden in a wall. Since then, more than 135 people have sued the hospital, alleging negligence for failing to stop the abuse.
This is something I don’t say too often but when I was abused, sexually explicit pictures were taken. This was a long time ago. And I don’t know what happened to them. And I am grateful this happened before the Internet b/c spreading that stuff was a lot more difficult then. However it has affected me in that I have a difficult time having pictures taken of myself even today, or sometimes looking at myself in the mirror.

it’s something I am trying to “get over” but that’s not always easy when you know that other people are…I’ll stop there. it really is necessary at least for me to detach myself from other people’s views and opinions of me, b/c I have no control of what is out there or where it is, probably I would hope gone/destroyed after all this time.

However I am working on getting past this.

Pictures and other documented evidence can be hard for survivors to live with, b/c you don’t know what’s being done with them. I can see how discovering this would lead to outrage.

Now I feel like I need to take a shower. ick.

Silentstar…Prayers to you in the healing you most definitely need. I am so sorry you on the receiving end of such an atrocious and filthy crime.

May God’s peace, love and healing sweep over your very being.

Amen sister I idenify with you 100%%. If you haven’t been there it is hard to imagine the sickness, and the cover up just as bad.
