Sair;8117946:
It is a pretext for the act of sex.
And I suppose monogamous marriage is never this…
If you are a polyamorist it must be one of your main aims because sexual pleasure and satisfaction are essential priorities which determine your life style and without which you are doomed to be frustrated and unhappy.
Sex no more dominates the lifestyle of a polyamorist than it does that of a monogamist. To say otherwise is the equivalent of saying that sex is the primary goal of marriage, and that your relationship with your spouse is all and only about the sex.
Sexual opportunities are not the most important emotional opportunities.
Except with your spouse?
You equate all your needs with sexual needs.
Hardly. Do you obtain all your emotional and intellectual satisfaction from your spouse? Or do you spend time with other friends as well?
Do you believe only what you observe?
I believe only what has a demonstrable bearing upon my life in this world.
it ceases.
Based upon observation. There are no observations or experiences that suggest otherwise. Do you participate in seances and speak with dead people? Otherwise, on what basis do you assume that despite all evidence to the contrary, minds persist in the absence of neural activity?
A connection is not a cause.
Not necessarily, but it’s still a connection. How does anything nonphysical have any connection to anything at all?
Ideals are personal goals based on our highest values and principles more important than pleasure and even survival.
Such as?
Excessive attachment to pleasure.
So, would you claim that a scholar who found great pleasure in learning was being indulgent?
Do you never practise self-denial?
Sure I do. But not for its own sake.
How do you know that? Your entire philosophy is based on obsolete materialism - which was discredited when logical positivism collapsed.
Then I take it you’ve never heard of nonreductive physicalism…
It is ludicrous to think that without sexual intercourse with others we are doomed to isolation.
But without interaction with others, we are doomed to isolation. It seems odd to hold sexual interaction apart from every other form of personal interaction.
So you don’t want to level the playing field?
Sure I do, but this is quite distinct from my polyamorous inclinations. The one is not a product of the other - it would be just as easy to be a monogamous feminist, and many women are so.
Countless couples outside the Church share that belief.
Not usually outside religious regulations, though.
The issue is not sexuality but polyamory…
Actually, the issue really is sexuality. You only see one form of it as legitimate.
Your misguided preconception of my concept of polyamory!
Your continuous denouncement of polyamory as being all about cheap sexual thrills would seem to suggest that you do equate it with casual promiscuity.
Idolatry is a far more appropriate term for those who replace God with goals like pleasure and sex.
I don’t idolise pleasure - I merely seek it and appreciate it, not only for myself but for all those with whom I share my life.
Sharing cannot be on the same terms.
And you know this how?
Polyamorists regard every friend as a potential sex object. For you sexual pleasure is an absolute necessity for understanding a person and developing the highest form of love.
Polyamorists - at least those who practice it the way I do - regard close friends as family. We seek relationships with whole people, not, as I have repeatedly pointed out, for the sake of sex. Sex is just one way of relating to a person, not the end goal of the relationship.
Sexploitation includes the multiple use of sex as a proof and guarantee of love.
‘Use’ of sex, I suspect, is distinct from participation in sexual intimacy with a lover.
No. There is the element of choice.
Well, that really didn’t answer the question. I presume what you mean is that the bonobo doesn’t choose whether or not to masturbate. How would you know?
your moral values on our evolutionary heritage?
Given that I believe the ability to comprehend morality is part of our evolutionary heritage, yes.
