I want to write an article or even a book about how Protestantism leads to atheism. But I need some help. If anyone has any (name removed by moderator)ut about their connection please let me know. I haven’t looked into it but have countries that stayed mostly catholic kept faith in God vs countries that became mostly protestant? And I feel relativism is one bridge between them
I agree that Protestantism leads to atheism. That is, the spirit in Protestantism of protest and reform, which, when once started, does not stop, but has continued through the centuries.
The first Reformers rejected some aspects of Catholicism and retained others. Subsequent reformers rejected more aspects. We can see how Lutheran and Anglican churches resemble Catholic ones in many ways, but Presbyterian and Puritan even less, both in appearance and doctrine. Then Anabaptist churches less so again. The Anabaptists rejected infant baptism but they still retained belief in the Trinity.
But then Unitarians and Jehovah’s Witnesses shed belief in the Trinity, and JW’s don’t even call themselves a church, and the architecture of their “Kingdom Halls” is intentionally made to look as unlike a church as possible.
So you can see the shape of the trajectory that was started with the Protestant Reformation. It is reductionist, as more and more things are recognized to be simply Catholic Tradition. The Reformation rejected Tradition, which means those things that are eventually seen to rest on Tradition can be legitimately discarded or ignored.
Ultimately, in the 19th and 20th centuries modern liberal Protestants realized that belief in the Bible itself was simply a Catholic tradition (as Catholics had long argued). Even belief in God was also seen to be simply a Catholic tradition. Protestants had inherited their beliefs in scripture and in God from the Catholics, so if the Catholics were wrong, then how can belief in scripture and in God be any longer held?
That is my argument put briefly as to one way Protestantism can lead to atheism, or, rather, to unbelief in God. The Spirit if the Reformation is that of reducing, until nothing is left.
More details and examples can be added. The Eucharist is either watered down, ignored, or symbolized. The same with baptism and the rest of the Sacraments. A process of dilution until all that is left is water. The trajectory gets lower and lower until it reaches zero. Until there is nothing left to believe in.
(As an aside, that is how Fundamentalism came to be, as a reaction to modern liberalism. But theirs is a rear-guard action as they have no Authority behind them.)
