Several dozen tradition-minded Roman Catholic theologians, priests and academics have formally accused Pope Francis of spreading heresy with his 2016 opening to divorced and civilly remarried Catholics.

In a 25-page letter delivered to Francis last month and provided Saturday to The Associated Press, the 62 signatories issued a “filial correction” to the pope — a measure they said hadn’t been employed since the 14th century.

I don’t think Pope Francis is a heretic, and the truth is we probably have had heretical popes , but the office of the papacy is protected, even under heretical popes.
Yes, indeed. Infallibility doesn’t mean the Pope can’t hold to or spread heresy, infallibility says he cannot teach it or proclaim it ex cathedra.

I didn’t think this sort of garbage was allowed on CAF. But it’s seems to be all over the forum today. On the Lord’s day no less. How many of you have spent the Lord’s day trashing the Vicar of Christ. I see who you are, shame on you. And hopefully these threads will be taken down before people visiting this forum think that Catholics consider their pope to be a heretic.

This isn’t garbage, it’s due news. Quite frankly I applaud the theologians who have issued this, they are rightly standing up for the orthodox faith. Francis, no matter what his intentions are, has been inciting heresy in the Church. As the the Vicar of Christ, I respect him as such, but that doesn’t mean corrections don’t need to be made. Pope’s are not perfect, and other Pope’s in the past have needed these kinds of corrections before. Look at Pope John XXII for example.

Sorry, it is garbage. Shame on the people who disrespect Pope Francis.

Shame on you for even suggesting that. This is in no way disrespecting the Pope. Did you even read the letter? It couldn’t have been more respectful!

I’m not going to jump on the Pope bashing train. Never, no way.

You will find that “bashing” = “you said something I don’t agree with about something I like” in this forum

Accusing Pope Francis of inciting heresy is bashing the pope. No Cardinal, I repeat, no Cardinals have made these accusations of heresy as this “document” does. You are not getting behind anyone but a group of misguided people.

It is the job of Cardinals to help the pope. No one else. If you want to discuss the dubia…fine. But this garbage being discussed in this thread is the height of arrogance.

There is plenty of Pope Francis bashing going on in these threads. There is nothing here that rises to the level of discussion except for a few posters who have tried to bring reason to the thread…it hasn’t worked.

Exactly. I’m glad a lot of people who pulled that hogwash are gone.

Francis, no matter what his intentions are, has been inciting heresy in the Church.
This is what pope bashing looks like, since some of you don’t seem to recognize it.

There is plenty more in other threads by other posters

You’re using the word “bashing” pretty liberally here. This is a CORRECTION, by writing this they are helping the Pope. Are you so blind as to not see this? I guess by your logic, we should be shaming St. Paul when he rebuked St. Peter (Galatians 2).

And no, you’re wrong to assert something like this hasn’t occurred before in the history of the Church. In the 14th century, when Pope John XXII was spreading errors about the beatific vision, a group of theologians gathered in Paris and sent a polite letter to him reaffirming the orthodox faith and correcting him of his errors.

Oh just stop. You are now just trying to cause a stir and create conflict. Nobody is bashing, people can have different opinions, we don’t have to agree with everything the Pope says, and we don’t even have to like him. Just stop. You’re doing nothing to help.

I’ll slow down. I am accusing you of pope bashing. I really could care less about this joke that was sent to Pope Francis in July. I’m wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t even read it. 🤣

My concerns is not with this document that is the subject of these threads, it’s with the fact that there are people here on CAF who are holding it up as if it actually has meaning. It is meaningless. It was put together by laity and an SSPX bishop. And CAF posters are really getting on the heresy bandwagon because of it.

So could someone more educated than me clarify the situation?
  1. Have these people accused the Pope of heresy?
  2. Is disagreeing with the Pope heresy?
