Each book addresses a different aspect of the Catholic faith

I would start with Rome Sweet Home, its his story of how he came into the Catholic Church. The Marriage Supper (I believe that is what it is called, if not its something similar) is a book about the Mass.
The Lamb’s Supper by Scott Hahn. I’m on my third reading and have bought three copies of the book to give to friends.

My brothers and sisters all give great resources and advice!

I am a cradle Catholic who did as she was told for many years. Then, because I love history and reading, I learned about the Protestant Reformation.

I first learned about Martin Luther and how the Lutheran church broke off from the Catholic Church in 1517.

Then about King Henry VIII and how he made himself a pope in 1534.

I looked up every religion and traced them all back to the Catholic Church! Amish, Quakers, Baptist, Seventh-day Adventist!

I would first look up the religion.

The Salvation Army.

Find out who founded it.

William Booth.

Find out what religion he came from.

Methodist.

**Then look up Methodist and who founded it. **

John and Charles Wesley.

What religion did they come from?

Church of England.

**Who founded it? **

King Henry VIII.

**What religion did he come from? **

The Catholic Church.

Guess what? The buck stops there!

Try it!

One more!
Amish
Who founded it?
Jacob Amman
What religion did he come from?
Mennonite
Who founded it?
Menno Simons
What religion did he come from?
Anabaptist (and before that he was Dutch Roman Catholic Priest)
Who founded the Anabaptist Church?

Thomas Münzer (a Lutheran preacher) and Nicholas Storch,
What religion did they come from?
Lutheran
Who founded that church?
Martin Luther
What religion was he before?
He was a Catholic monk

One last thing–

Look to our history for answers. Before the year 1517ad there was only the Catholic Church.

If you lived in the year 1516, or 1312, or 1100 and you were reading the bible and it said

**Matthew 18:17 **
17If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

**
Which church would you go to? **

Protestants not around until 1517.

**Ephesians 3:21 **

21to Him be the **glory in the church **and in Christ Jesus **to all generations **forever and ever. Amen.

What other church has been around for all generations?
**
Matthew 28:20 **

20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

The Reformation didn’t start until 1517. Did Jesus say I am with you starting in about 1000 years or so?

Ephesians 5

25Husbands, love your wives, just as **Christ loved the church **and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30for we are members of his body. 31"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." 32This is a profound mystery—**but I am talking about Christ and the church. **33However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Christ is one with His Church. Not churches. Scripture makes more sense to me, now that I know the history of other religions and my own. I hope I have been helpful.

Thank you, this is very interesting insight and helps me see things in a different way. I appreciate the time you took to write that up.

I’d say start at the begining and read it cover to cover. the Catechism is laid out in a very good way I think.

(I wouldn’t recommend the same for the bible to most folks however, most folks would never get past Numbers.)

At the same time, don’t hesitate to hit the index and skip to particular subjects of interest.

But I’d work my way through it in oder.

Chuck
I actually just got a copy of the Catechism in the mail…a bit overwhelming, should I just start from the beginning?

I understand what your saying about the Church in union with the Bishop of Rome, but I want to know why how the papacy developed and have a defense for why things are the way they are.

Thanks!
