I hope it is ok to ask this question here, but how do LDS celebrate Easter Sunday and the Resurection? Do they do anything different or special tomorrow?

Thank you.

Nothing all that different to be honest.
For 1) many times Easter falls on the first weekend of April, which is always General Conference. (GC). That is when all Mormons gather to watch the broadcast from Salt Lake City and listen to their leaders (1st Presidency and Quorum of 12 Apostles) give “talks” or sermons if you will.
  1. If it doesnt fall on GC weekend, then the only real reflection will be in the music and the talks by members given that day during Sacrament meeting. Compared to other faith traditions, Easter is comparitively “nothing special” liturgically speaking as to other Sundays
AFA Christmas goes, if it doesnt fall on a Sunday, Mormons dont gather as a community of faith to celebrate it

As the years went by while watching GC, it was harder and harder for me not to get bored with what seemed to be rehashed talks and topics. I remember thinking once, on one of the last GC’s I watched, the whole idea of “milk before meat” line.

I was getting tired of “milk” alllllll the time…and I felt starved and undernourished…
I definitely was hungering and thirsting for a more substansive meal…
I agree. I think everyone goes into Conference hoping that there will be something new or interesting, maybe a new revelation, but it’s more of the same. The big thing these days was lowering the missionary age. And the possibility of a woman giving one of the prayers next week, which, if I understand correctly, has never happened.

I mean, there’s certainly nothing wrong with what is discussed (i’m not talking about theological correctness), it’s just that it’s the same every year, twice a year.

Right. My ward (didn’t go today) had Resurrection-themed hymns, some sung by the ward choir (we only do ward choir for Christmas and Easter, at least for now), and Resurrection-themed talks. If GC is on the same weekend as Easter, then we’d do the Easter Sacrament Meeting the week before. For Christmas, we do the Christmas-themed Sacrament Meeting 1-3 weeks before Christmas (because our ward is YSA, so lots of students that go back to Utah/Cali/AZ/Vegas/etc.

Also, thought I’d share that my mother said that she read a Georgetown article about how many Catholics that left the Church are coming back…then promptly gave me a weeks notice that I’m to go to Mass again next Sunday 😉

LOL… 🙂

JPII designated the Sunday after Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday (St Faustina Kalwaska (sp?)… 😉

He also brought up an African American hymn, something like Were You There When They Crucified Our Lord. Cardinal Dolan said that as Catholics, you can answer Yes, because at the Mass, His sacrifice is re-presented, and you are taken to the foot of the cross at Calvary. I wrote that one down.
Hi LW7, we sang this hymn at Mass on Palm Sunday.

Our Easter Vigil was amazing, always wears me out so much happens so fast. Spent Sunday with my family, made a nice afternoon lunch out on the bbq. It was a warm day (finally). I finished out my Easter Sunday with vespers, and am glad I went. Back at the grind today.

I’ll be in NYC for business this month. 🙂 I’m going to try to squeeze in an evening Mass while I’m there, if I can.

Interesting that General Conference would trump the holiest day in Christianity. If there was a conflict you would think they would work this out in advance. That truly amazes me.

Officially the LDS Church was organized on April 6th, so they try to keep GC around that time if at all possible.

LDS don’t follow a liturgical calendar. I didn’t know a liturgical calendar existed until I was in RCIA, and it took me the longest time to figure out what people meant by “liturgical calendar”. It was a very odd discovery for me, in the context of my background and experience.

LDS loosely observe our liturgical days of Christmas and Easter, but their own traditions (little ‘t’) are in place and define (or govern) the observances outside of all Christian Tradition.

Really! 👍

Glad you had a great experience. My cousin’s fiancee just became Catholic at Easter Vigil, receiving baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist. I’m sure it’s a wonderful experience to be part of the RCIA process.

Nice! Warning if you go to St. Patrick’s: they’re doing some restoration work, so there’s construction all over. It’s still beautiful, but yeah, there’s scaffolding everywhere, some pews blocked off, etc. There are many other beautiful Catholic churches in the city, though you have to check out St. Patrick’s if you never have, construction and all.

As Rebecca mentioned, LDS aren’t liturgical, and don’t follow a liturgical calendar (I had to mention this a number of times to friends and coworkers that asked if we celebrate Good Friday, and were “shocked” that when I said I went to a Good Friday service, it was a Catholic liturgy, haha). LDS generally would say that even though General Conference would “trump” Easter if they fall on the same day, Easter is still observed, the week before actual Easter, and in GC they would have Easter-themed hymns and talks. LDS generally seem to be okay with such things. Same with Christmas when it doesn’t fall on a Sunday. It is also frequently said that such holidays are observed in the home with families, reading scriptures, singing hymns, family activities, etc.

From what I understand, a number of LDS attend traditional Christian services on Christmas day when it doesn’t fall on a Sunday, since we don’t have our own services on that day. I’m sure Rebecca has found many LDS at her parish on Christmas. 😛

LW, I have to ask. Did you make it to a Holy Thursday Mass/service?

Being part of the RCIA process is similar to participating here. Rewarding, frustrating, and a little drama thrown in for good measure.

Congratulations to your cousin and fiancé.

Looks like I’ll be closest to St. Paul the Apostle, or St. John the Baptist. Amusingly close to the Manhattan Mormon temple. Even when I leave Utah I can’t get away from You People. :p:D

We get a lot of visitors at Christmas and Easter. They give out tickets to the midnight Christmas Eve Mass. I avoid that one and go to the 7pm vigil Mass, which is still very crowded but not ridiculous crowded like midnight. The four Easter Masses yesterday were standing room only.

For a while we had several youth groups coming through at random times during the year. You can tell they are LDS because they just sit there with confused looks and never move. 😃 but someone must have put an end to that as I haven’t seen a LDS youth group at mass for months.

Amen!!!

I have been running our parish’s RCIA program for almost 20 years now. Just when you think you have the little fires under control a forest fire is coming up begind you…lol

Correction: We studied the Liturgical Documents of Vatican II, and we focus on the Resurrected Christ on ordinary Sunday – holiest day…of the week, and most important celebration of the Liturgical Year.

Our Resurrection Sunday, – Not Mormon take that Catholics focus on the Cross, that is more our daily walk, the main focus of our unity as Catholics is instead celebrated every Sunday, focusing not on the Cross in itself, but on the Resurrected and Glorified Lord in heaven, ministering to the altar from heaven to the one here on earth.

On Resurrection Sunday, the graces provided on ordinary Sunday contain the same power and presence of Christ Himself as He was on that day 2000 years ago. Subsequently, we work out our salvation by participating and knowing what happens at Mass and apply ourselves by participating fully with full contemplation and action.

The greatest ‘work’ we do as Catholics is to stand present with Jesus at every Mass, be it daily Mass, that through us His redemptive and saving presence extends out all over the world.
