Why do non-Catholic Christians and others believe Constantine created the Catholic faith? Just thought I’d bring this up since I was having my coffee with friends who have said this…bizarre…

Because their Church can be traced back to a single man who established it. The Catholic Church cannot, except for Jesus of course, - so they have to make up a fact. Plain and simple 🙂

Okay, true. But why INSIST this is so? Why don’t they get it? Is it their pride or what? Does anyone here believe this to be true?

I think they focus on Constantine because it gives credence to their false notion that the Catholic Church is a pagan church that a pagan ruler created and not the one true Church.
These are the same people who accuse Catholics of idol worship, sun gods, yadda yadda. I think its probably big point for Seven Day Adventists to try and prove the day of rest was moved to Sunday to accommodate the sun god. Some probably believe, others probably just have a complex about who started their church.

You know, some Protestants have nutty notions about the Catholic Church. This post proves they are not to be outdone. Are you really under the impression that this is what all Protestants believe?

Christ started the Church - at Pentecost. Not Peter. Not Andrew. Not Luther. Not Calvin. Christ did. And true Catholics are not idol worshippers, or sun god worshippers. They are Christians.
And Protestants aren’t all “prideful, and arrogant, and out protesting”. They’re Christians, too, trying to worship as they believe proper.

…a wise man once said (sheen i believe), he did not know anyone who disliked the catholic chruch that knew what the church believed… but he knew millions that disliked the church of what they thought the church believed…Peace:thumbsup:

Christianity was changed forever from before Constatine. Somethings were for the better some not so. Make a list and examine it yourself. There are many such lists out there.

I agree. I think it goes the other way, too.

There is much debate whether Constantine was ever a Christian.
If he was, only God can know his heart, he clung to many pagan ideas and practices after his so called conversion.

I have to say, your words are a breathe of fresh air because too many people loose sight that we are all God’s children when debating issues in these forums. 👍

Thanks, Mike.
I was somewhat frustrated when I wrote that. I’m glad it came out the way you read it. :coolinoff:

No of course I don’t think all Protestants believe this - but in this particular topic I was discussing the ones who do. I never even used the word Protestant in my post. I was discussing only people who hold this false historical belief, I did not mean it to be a lump statement. That said, I have encountered people who truly believe this, as the OP has as well. I think the reasons for its prevalence are as I stated above. I also think atheists use this false fact as well.

I agree that I don’t know if Constantine himself was every really a Christian or if it was a political move. I know that he did not establish the Catholic Church.

Good. I hope my post above was not too rough. Forgive me if it was.

Constantine legalized Christianity which allowed the church to become more organized. The first ecumenical council was held since the one described in Acts 15. The bishops of the world were able to gather in a formal meeting and lay down the doctrines of the church more clearly than had been done before. Constantine encouraged the building of churches.

Also, the history of the church before Constantine is more murky than after Constantine. It’s very clear that the faith that existed after Constantine’s time is similar to today’s Catholicism and Orthodoxy - so a protestant has no choice but to claim that somewhere in the murky centuries before Constantine there was a church that looked more like their protestant churches. Otherwise they have no historical basis whatsoever for protesantism ever existing before the middle ages.

Jon, she never stated that all Protestants are “prideful, arrogant and out protesting” (she speaks only of those who insist that the CC was started by Constantine). And although Christ started the Church he did so through the apostles.

“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with the Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.” Ephesians 2:19-20

There is an authorititative structure to the Church that is necessary to unity.

Might I correct? Constantine did NOT legalize Christianity so to speak. He did, but, only for the Roman territories. Armenia and Ethiopia (both, note, are Apostolic), both made it their state religion in 301 A.D. Constantine basically decriminalized Christianity. I don’t think he made it the official state religion, but, he basically said if one is a Christian, they are free to believe it. Please, PLEASE correct this if I am wrong.

And, of COURSE Constantine became Christian! The Orthodox have a saints day for him! And St. Helen!

On his deathbed is when he was baptized. He was a pagan all of his life at least in name.Remember he was a politician first and foremost and holding on to his power was more important to him then anything else.

Hi Josie,
I know she didn’t. I was responding in a general sense about the charges against Catholics and the charges against Protestants. Those are some of the ones we hear, just like you hear idol worshipper and such. And yes, Christ did use the apostles, no doubt.

I think you were also possibly referencing the silly “Protestants are PITIFUL” thread we all saw here recently…a low point for me seeing that…sigh…

From the way you worded your post it seemed as though you did think she did. It’s good to know that you don’t however.
