Just put an artist you like into Pandora, and it will give you a radio station with like sounding bands. It works with most music genres, and it’s free.

Happy listening.

Yours in Christ,
Thursday

EDIT:
Forgot to add that you can tell it you really like a song, or don’t like it at all. Also, you can go straight to the track at the iTMS if you want to buy the song. All in all, Pandora rocks.

Reliant K is a Catholic group.

Here are some (non-Catholic) Christian artists/groups…

Rebecca St. James, Toby Mac, Barlow girl, ZOEgirl, Hawk Nelson,
Everlife, Jars of clay, John Reuben

Also go to wayfm.com (a Christion station) to se if they have a station arround you. or air1

Hi,

Because I have been finding secular rock/pop music a little boring with a few exceptions, I have been listening recently to Christian Music Radio (CMR) through the internet using itunes. There are some cool and fresh sounding bands in this genre such as Staple, Anberlin, and Grand Prize. Any other choice groups you care to share about or some cool modern Catholic groups out there?

This seems like it could be a light and fun topic here.

God Bless,
How hard and heavy do you like your music? I got a big list.

Shane and Shane are great musicians but not very original with lyrics. Jars of Clay are decent. Most other Christian musicians aren’t very good and I know a LOT. I was in my old Protestant Church’s “praise band” and we listened to a ton of it.

I have to agree with nucatholic. I read an interesting review piece about the Christian Rock genre…and the conclusions were what I pretty much already knew:

-that bands who happen to be “Christian” but don’t label/market themselves exclusively as such tend to employ more innovation in their music as they have to appeal to a wider audience and rely solely on the artistry of their music to get noticed. Examples: Linkin Park, Evervessence, etc.
  • that bands/artists self-identified as Christian rock tend to sound about 3 to 5 years behind the curve in terms of overall contemporary music trends.
Clearly there are exceptions out there but I found this assessment to be pretty interesting.

My parish recently held a John Angotti concert and then he played at Mass. It was soooooo tiresome: His compositions sounded exactly like Richard Marx circa 1987.

They are having another concert soon by a different artist I’ve never heard of but who is supposedly a big deal “in the scene” so I may check her out.

Thanks for the replies; I have to admit my tastes in music are quite pagan; even though I enjoy listening to Gregorian chant once in a while. I am going to take up Dimmers offer; I am more modern rock than the heavier stuff.

God Bless,

Chris Rice, y’all!!!

I like a lot of contemporary Christian music. About 2 years ago, I switched radio stations - from pop music and talk radio to CCM - and pretty much listen to those stations exclusively now - both have great music for my commutes to and from work. In the evenings one station (WGTS/DC) has a program called “Sharing LIfe Together” - which has the call in format of the “love & relationship” shows on pop /easy listening stations - but with a faith filled message. The other station (WRBS/Balto) has preachers in the evening - many of who are decidedly anti-Catholic - so I turn the channel when they come on.

Michael W. Smith (saw in concert)
Steven Curtis Chapman (saw in concert)
Chris Tomlin (saw in concert)
Third Day (want to see in concert)

These are a few of the artists I like, and a lot more. I have to disagree with the posters who think that Christian music overall just isn’t very good. I think it is an emerging genre and gets better every day.

I have downloaded quite a bit of CCM, and burned several CDs. The Catholic artists were a bit harder to find - Catholic Music Network is a good source. I haven’t found any Catholic radio stations in my area - so if you know of any, let me know.

Try the Tooth And Nail Records website. Plenty Christian Rock, Christian Hardcore and Metal there. Those bands are definitely big and “in the scene”

These are Christian Bands. Non-Catholics. Seems like Catholics can’t make good metal or Alt Rock. I’m sorry to say but the Evangelicals are beating us in music. Quite a good way to get at our youth. BTW These are hardcore/metalcore/emo/numetal bands. Nothing you would want to listen to if you can’t handle GRR-RAH and heavy guitar riffs.

As I lay Dying
Still Remains
Norma Jean
Underoath
Haste The Day
Emery
August Burns Red
Lamb of God
Zao
Mortification

Then there is the only Catholic hardcore/emo/metalcore I find decent Seven Sorrows

There are a lot of Catholic Brazilian hardcore/death metal bands. But they are pure cheese.

I’ve heard rumors of Avenged Sevenfold being inspired by Catholicism and you can see it in their lyrics. But… they don’t practice or at least live very Catholic lives. But yeah…

hey, thanks for the recommendations; I dig hardcore and goth (as well as many other genres, like garage, r&b, emo, goth, dance, indie rock/pop, etc., but I’m not much on metal.

I’ll try something, ANYTHING, as long as it isn’t just re-hashed 80’s soft-rock/power ballads with the word “Jesus” thrown in for marketing pruposes!

Rock on!

oh, and I heard (read, actually) some Catholics/Christians asserting that Good Charlotte is a Christian Rock band…

Has anyone else heard that?

Hey, an absolutely awesome Catholic pop artist is Janelle…I’m not sure where you can find her, but try www.janelle.com or org or net and something should come up! Oh, yeah, and she’s Canadian…listen to her song about John Paul II (Be Not Afraid) and you’ll absolutely love her!
